What type of system are you lookig for?

If you check out www.pricewatch.com - they list machines from all over the web. VERY good site!

Xbox :)

You could throw together some old parts and make something. What are you trying to build the system for? Ebay always has those 386's for $10 bucks each. :) :)

Both Walmart and Fry's sell PC's for around $200. They come with Linux preinstalled, but I guess you could always throw a copy of Windows on them instead...

Try PeoplePC. Very cost-effective from what I understand.

I've used one a few times and it's not terrible, though you do get what you pay for. It's a very bare-bones system.

eMachines were absolute crap about 5 years ago, now they're no longer terrible... Oh wait, they're owned by Gateway so I suggest you stay far far away.

There is no such thing as a good $200 computer, unless its used and loaded with RAM. You could get one of those Linux boxen that Walmart (and others) sell, but then you're got to load Windows on it... or learn (shudder) Linux. A new $200 computer isn't going ot come with enough RAM to use XP well anyhow... W2K would work pretty well...

It doesn't have to include the monitor, just the box.

you can get a pretty good machine 4 or 5 posts into this thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=40&threadid=1508668&enterthread=y

the total is about $330, but way better than what you'd get for $200.

Find a friend who works for the gov't building computers, mine offered to make me one for 200 out of bits and pieces lying around the lab he worked in with access to weather satellites, I turned him down because all I needed was to make a keystroke and cause a disaster.

Check ebay, you can find some used stuff cheap.

Again I could be more helpful if I knew what the box is going to be used for. :)
