I'm about to flip my shit. I'm facing not having O&A.

So I have the SkyFi Boombox -- the one that flips over and has a CD player and AM/FM radio too. I use the SkyFi 1 receiver. All was well until yesterday, when the thing kept shutting off by itself. I did not have the auto shut down feature engaged. I turn it back on and it goes back off, each interval resulting in a quicker shut down. I take the unit out of the boombox, let it sit for a bit, put it back in, and get this horrible screeching/static noise. Now it turns off immediately after turning on. So, two questions...

1 - Which is fucked, the SkyFi unit or the boombox?
2 - Do I have any recourse for a replacement? I bought both through the XMFan Store in early October, 2004. I do not have the box or packaging or receipt anymore.

I need to know if I have to go buy new equipment before the weekend is over. Thanks in advance for the help!

Might take a while to resolve the issue with Delphi. Short term solution may be to listen online, and send the unit for service, rather than buying new equipment this weekend. I had a Roady, and now a Roady2. Only problem was the display backlight went bad on the first one. Best Buy replaced it, no questions asked.

Thanks, dupree. Why do you say it would take a while to resolve with Delphi?

Not too sure I would invest in servicing the boombox. Honestly, I wasn't too thrilled with it and I'm looking for other solutions to listen to XM. I only listen at home -- don't need a car in NYC and can't listen at work. I just need something that I can have in any room of the house. The boombox was easy enough to carry from room to room but wasn't the best quality in terms of equipment.

let me clarify, I'm not sure it would take a long time with Delphi. I just think it would involve sending the unit out for service (shipping and repair time) Meanwhile, you could spend the $4.99 to listen online (added to your account, if you haven't already)
I don't know much about the SkyFi, I use my Roady with a patch cord between my unit and the audio-in jack on my stereo. I also picked up a car stereo with an audio-in jack on the front of it to wire it in there. I'm not too impressed by the FM-modulator and the cassette adaptor eventually killed my car cassette player (after about a year of lots of use, 6-8 hours a day while working) Roady also has a battery pack thing now, making portable like a MyFi, without the recording features though.

You could do the "evil" thing and buy a new boombox at BestBuy then return the old one to see if it's the boombox or not...

if he doesn't have the receipt and didn't buy it with a credit card, he can't return it. i know that firsthand. Bastards.

This is wrong, but I think he meant this.....

1. Buy a second boom box
2. Put old boombox in the packaging for the new one.
3. Return to Best Buy

Once again, I am not saying to do this, but I think that is what he is implying.

Do you have a laptop? I'd get xm online if you had a laptop and some small desktop speakers thats easy enough to move from room to room plus online is only 7.99/mo so you save a few bucks and if you really wanted to you could *cough* streamrip *cough* the feed

You could hook the line out of the SkyFi to a stereo system. If the SkyFi still acts the same when hooked up to a stereo system, then you can assume it's the SkyFi that's messed up. Otherwise if the SkyFi cooperates with the other stereo system, then it's the boombox that's messed up.

It kind of sounds like the SkyFi Boombox is the problem, but I can't be too sure on that since 1) I'm not playing around with it, 2) I own neither the SkyFi or boombox.

Not based on experience, but dealing with Delphi is a pain is what I hear. You could of course try it and temporarily subscribe online for the time or you could just get a whole new setup (if you have the money and want to upgrade).

If you bought it in Oct 04, it should still be under warranty. If this is the case, you will be without it for a bit, but you won't have to pay for it to be fixed.

As for the switcheroo gag on Best Buy, that should work too. Just don't try that with an actual reciever because they check out the reciever-specific code on those.

I work PT at Best Buy... our customer service people will take ANYTHING back.

Last week. I shit you not.

They gave a guy a cash refund for a brick.

It was in a digital camera box. But it was a brick.

But yes don't try the switcheroo with the actual skyfi. They have their own ID codes, which are printed on the box as well as on channel 0. That's how XM knows if you're a subscriber or not.
