XM LIQUID METAL - XM 42
In order to make room for new programming, XM Liquid Metal has been removed from the XM Satellite Radio lineup. Fans can still get their metal fix on Squizz - XM 48 — where XMLM's Ward Cleaver will host a new weekday show featuring hard, fast, heavy metal from Noon until 3PM ET.

That sux..What bout the people that dont want to listen to the Liquid Metal type tunes in the mid-afternoon, and our used to whats on Squizz.. And what about the people that listen to LIquid Metal all day long.. There are people who get XM for certain things, like the fact that they can listen to Liquid Metal all day. That does really suck for those people.

there's a big gap between 102 (Ngoma, the african music channel) and 110 (one of the news channels) that can be filled, and i want to see it filled at 103 with J-Pop (i know, i'm a fagget).
Sucks they took it off. i was wondering what the fuck was going on when i saw:
Home Plate
XM 175
on my XM display, I switch to it, and lo and behold, 16 new channels for Baseball. YAY! Go Brewers! Go SAWKS! GO WAHOOS!
Liquidmetal is an awesome channel, why the fuck would they pull it

There are definately spots in the channels to add without taking away. That's really stupid for them to do something like this. What about 33-40 which are blank? Not that I listened to XM42 that often...I really like what Squizz plays and don't want to merege the two.

Are there a limited amount of channles that they can broadcast? And baseball - f'n spring training even, dosent even start for weeks!

according to a repeating message:
"XM Liquid Metal has solidified...has solidified...solidified..."
you get the point. it's now a crystalline compound, they say.
and they say "anger and glory are now on the web. Yay." which means only XM Online listeners can hear XMLM.
gotta hand it to XM, it runs itself like the whole radio industry.
and to answer all of your questions, it was probably a bandwidth issue. the bandwidth needed for the 16 MLB channels (14 play-by-play, 1 spanish play-by-play, and MLB Home Plate) at 24 kbps must have equaled enough to warrant the removal of a channel. any other channels taken off?

Just because channels are blank doesn't mean XM has the bandwidth to just dump channels here and there at their leisure. Adding another satellite won't make a difference either because it will not increase bandwidth - that is solely provided by the FCC and getting more isn't an option at this time and won't be for a while.
If you want to complain, PLEASE do so in a respectful manner and be polite. E-mail Lee Abrams @ lee.abrams@xmradio.com

Blah. Yeah, we still have a bunch of Spanish stations and the "Black Power" channel. I'm not a metal fan, but this stinks for everyone that is. I'm sure XMLM had way more listeners than any of those channels.
Some channels are on XM by contract agreement, though, and can't be taken off. I believe one or two of the Spanish stations fall under that category.
I sent in my emails. This blows goat.

Latin music has a huge market.
They would not have taken this channel off the air if it had a huge amount of listeners. That's just the way business is done...

Guys this really fucking blows. We have to make our voices heard, there are way too many of us to ignore, heres a C&P from our Ziggy at his board, hope he doesnt mind:
If you want to do something about this, go ahead and send your emails and post here - some one will probably read it. That will have a one-time effect on the situation. If you want to make a lasting impression that will get reported to the higher-ups in the programming department on a weekly/monthly basis. Make it a point to listen to XMLM ONLINE for as long as you can EVERY DAY (if you have the service).
XM Radio online is the only way that XM can trully measure how many people listen to a given music channel accurately. No matter how hard you try, XMLM will not magically appear back on the sats in a few days, weeks, or months, but the potential is there to have it come back during a future reshuffling.
Voice your opinion daily where in matters listen ONLINE if you can!

They are actually done electronically - they send you an e-mail and you are asked to fill out forms on a website. For those wondering how to get a survey, it's random and XM has to have your e-mail address from the XM Signal newsletter as well as your consent.

I assumed that's what you meant, I just didn't want anyone to be confused :)
While XM can't monitor your radio (you're right), they can monitor the XM Online streams for those that have it. That probably provides some insight as to what channels are listened to most but it's not a very accurate sample of the 3+ million subscribers because not everyone subs. to XM Online.

Except for online.
The whole thing is total complete bullshit. You Squizz fans need not worry much, at the very most it will be watered down metal for 3 hours when Ward Cleaver starts on Squizz in March.
I considered going to Sirius, but I just caught the virus and have a few other music channels I listen to on XM. So I just came back from getting a fucking MP3 player from Circuit City. 30 GB Creative Nomad Zen. It's cool and all, but shit I haven't had to break out the MP3s since got XM in 2003.
Just so pissed at XM right now.
For the fans, keep the e-mails coming. Doubt it will do much good. People had similar campaigns when Special X was pulled... Didn't work. And I'll be dammed if I give XM and extra $4 / month to listen to XMLM online. (even though if all the XMLM listeners signed up and listed to 42 online it would show XM how popular the channel was) But the fact is it probably wasn't that popular. It was just one of the niche channels that helped make XM unique. Sirius Hard Attack just doesn't compare.

I love O&A but I'm just not paying $12.99 a month for 130 stations and 129 of them suck dick. It's painfully easy to hear the O&A show WITHOUT having XM and these dumb fuckers should realize that and fix this mistake they made.

Yawn. Metal.
Up your ass.
This still pisses me off.
XMLM was not even a good metal station (too much of that growling can't understand the vocals crap and not enough machinhead, pantera, megadeath, testament type bands) but it was the only one.
Boneyard is okay, but it's stuck in the 80's and plays too much mellow.
There are five Alt. stations and seven urban. Any one of those could have gone before the only metal station.
No place left for actual guitar talent to go....

04-17-2005, 07:43 AM
does this mean that more people listen to the african and world stations than XMLM
Not really. I think Ngoma and World Zone, like some of the BS channels like VH1 and MTV are under some type of contract. XM picked a channel to axe that wasn't under contract and a channel that would likely loose the least amount of listeners compared to the listeners they would gain with baseball.
Charlie Logan the dude over the Rock channels said it would take something like 30,000 people to make a difference. So far there are about 2,600 signatures on that lame online petition.
rmathus
04-17-2005, 12:33 PM
does this mean that more people listen to the african and world stations than XMLM
No. Most of those stations are provided under a contract with WorldSpace Satellite Radio (satellite radio for the rest of the world). Obviously, XM can't just drop those channels (along with a handful of other channels).
From Vyse @ xm411.com
What channels XM cannot eliminate due to existing contracts?
For this, I'll also list who's also backing these channels:
KISS, MIX, Nashville, Sunny:Clear Channel (influence waning since they pulled out their stake in XM)
U-POP, The System, World Zone, Ngoma: WorldSpace (global satellite radio service; WS also shares its technology with XM, as well as the city in which both companies have home bases [Washington, DC] )
