I think I am going to watch Fear and Loathing tonight in honor of one of the most entertaining writers of recent memory.

I'd like to know why he did it. Maybe he was terminally ill?

R.I.P. Hunter. A great writer.

I absolutely loved his writing especially from about Hell's Angels to the Great Shark Hunt period. he was not as sharp the last few years, but when he was on...he had few peers. Fear and Loathing in LV still makes me laugh out loud whenever I read it. Bummer.

"As you attorney, I advise you not to put a loaded gun towards your head."

That's truly a shame to hear. All the talented ones off themselves or die from drugs. No need to waste the gift that he had. I havent read his later stuff, but the Fear and Loathing on the campaign trail 72' & Las Vegas are some of my personal favorites to read. Well miss ya Dr. Gonzo!

Damn, I would've thought he'd OD or just have his body shut down from years of abuse instead of offing himself. I wonder if he was high when he did it. Sucks, he was one of my faves.

I just read that according to his will, he is to be creamated and have his ashes blasted out of a cannon across his Colorado estate. This guy is still fascinating after death!

He had to be high and a fly landed on his head and he figured the only way to kill it was....only way I can imagine the unique guy went out!

I could totally picture him just deciding that life has been a trip, but death would be an even greater adventure (think Captain Hook) and he just did not want to wait any longer.

At least he went out with a bang, ho ho!

Son: Thompson's Suicide Was Not Surprise
Thu Feb 24,11:29 AM ET Strange News - AP

By DAN ELLIOTT, Associated Press Writer

DENVER - Journalist Hunter S. Thompson's son says he wasn't surprised that his father committed suicide, but he was surprised it happened when it did.

"The way he chose to do it was not a surprise, but the timing was a total, total surprise," Juan Thompson said Wednesday in an interview with The Associated Press.

Hunter Thompson, 67, shot himself in the head Sunday just after 5:30 p.m. in the kitchen of his Aspen-area home. Juan Thompson said the "gonzo journalist" was not acting out of pain or desperation but probably decided it was time for him to go.

"One thing he said many times was that 'I'm a road man for the lords of karma.' It's cryptic, but there's an implication there that he may have decided that his work was done and that he didn't want to overstay his welcome; it was time to go," the 40-year-old son said by telephone from his father's home.

"He was not unhappy, he was not depressed, none of the things you would associate with someone who took his own life," he said.

Juan Thompson said his father had been in pain from a hip replacement, a broken leg and back surgery, but "I really don't believe it was motivated by pain."

The younger Thompson, his wife, Jennifer, and their 6-year-old son, William, were visiting from Denver and in the house when the writer pulled the trigger. Thompson's wife of two years, Anita, was at a health club.

Thompson was cremated Tuesday in Glenwood Springs. A private memorial service will be held March 5 in Aspen, with a public commemoration planned for spring or summer.

Thompson's family is looking into firing his ashes from a cannon, as he had wanted.

"It's a realistic possibility," the son said.

His death was manipulated to look like a suicide. In reality, it was only part of a conspiracy that goes deeper than Dirk Diggler ever did. Hunter was none other than "Deep Throat!" His hatred towards Nixon, the "smoking man," etc. He was planning to go public just in time to coincide with the impending release date of the new documentary, "Inside Deep Throat."

That is all.

He actually had sketches of the cannon.... it was a huge metal fist with two thumbs...

You can find sketches of the emblem on some of the websites, and it appears in some
documentary... In the BBC documentary..... you can tell he was planning his suicide all along.... I watched it right after the suicide, you can just tell that was the road he was taking....

I miss him already.....
Ive tried to embrace the spirit of Gonzo in my own ways....
through music.... through artwork.... and through experiences.....

He was so destined for self-destruction that he allowed 27 years to elapse between the documentary and his death.
