I heard Anthony talk about XM getting him an Alienware desktop, he sounded like he liked that machine. I went ahead and ordered an Area 51m 5500 with a lot of upgrades. Other then people that are paid to brag about them, I dont know anyone who has one, was this a good choice?

the money isn't an issue, I have a POS laptop now, wanted something much better, I did some research on it, just wanted some other input.

Might want to ask this question BEFORE you buy it.
It may be a good deal, but I would have researched it 1st before
plunking down the bucks.:icon_wink

It depends what you need it for.

need it for looking on Foundry and lots of porn.......

I can tell you that you overpaid for it no matter how much it is. Might as well just find someone who will build one for you if money isn't an option.

I got it directly from Alienware, lots of stuff written about them, sound pretty solid to me, if not, will make a damn good frizebee.....

Then you spent too much. Anything out there for $999 or less could do the job. Alienware is a good brand for PC performance though. Personally I would buy a Powerbook or iBook.

Looking at porn and Foundry, you should have no problems. If you do blame Steve C., he likes that sort of attention, incessantly too.

Yeah, Gateway's about the shittiest thing on the market today. I would recommend having a blind homeless guy building you a computer over a Gateway.

Never do that Dell plan either. By the time you pay the computer off it's completely outdated.

As long as it doesn't lock up on you or have a drive fail you should be fine.

But I would have bought something else if it were me. I've heard a lot of people complain about AW laptops. Drives failing and system shutdowns and so forth.

If you decide to return it an look for something else, go to NotebookReviews.com and check out their forums for a recommendation.

Personally, I'm buying an ASUS after looking at 6-8 different choices.. starting with Alienware.

That not really true in the subject of allienware

Post the specs?

And this belongs on the Computer and Gaming section :icon_conf

atomicshark
02-22-2005, 01:43 AM
If you are into the iPod stuff etc., why not an Apple Powerbook? For the same size screen, all aluminum construction, backlit keyboard, 1 inch thick, 5 pounds, 80GB HD, 512MB ram, 802.11G wireless,Gigabit ethernet, bluetooth, firewire 400 & 800 and USB 2 and Radeon 9700 that can run Apple's 30in LCD all standard for $1,999. Pricey for some, but reasonable compared to Alienware. NO one can match those specs in a laptop of that quality and size.

the one I bought is here: http://www.alienware.com/product_detail_pages/Area-51m/area-51m_features.aspx?SysCode=PC-LT-AREA51-M&SubCode=SKU-PERFORMANCE

I did make a few changess for the better, I dont think I got screwed, and its not like they are total junk......I appreciate all the opinions.

Alienware is notorious for overpriced computers.

02-22-2005, 04:27 AM
You are one lucky person retro. If money weren't an option I'd have at least one alienware computer. As far as building my own, I'm not a very good handyman and I don't want to take the time to do it. Alienware might be overpriced, but it's like the bmw or mercedes of computers, you buy it for the brand. They use the best video cards and hardware though. I also like their cases. I'm sure Anthony an Alienware at home that would make anyone jealous of his setup.

I bought the 7700 and it is fast as a tsunami! Just make sure you get a Soundblaster sound card if your going to use it for Avid, I made a mistake. It's the best system I ever used! The one problem is it takes a long time. It took about two months from order to delivery.

Hey Retro, since you consider your Gateway a POS, could I have it? After all I have none, and a POS is better than nothin'. (thought I'd give it a shot...)

In my opinion, anyone who buys a premade 'high end' computer is an asshole. You overpay for less than the best. If you're really interested in high end computing; get off your ass, learn the machines, and build one yourself.

TurboDan

I definitely agree about SoundBlaster cards. I bought my first one about seven or eight years ago to run on my IBM Aptiva (remember those? gold standard at the time). I was absolutely amazed by the audio.

This is the card I'm using now on my desktop:

He's talking about a laptop, dick. You build many?

In my opinion, anyone who buys a premade 'high end' computer is an asshole.

In my opinion, everyone who says "dood I could build my own cheaper" is an asshole. I know you buy those mobos and nics in such huge supply that you get the same pricing Dell gets.. Oh wait I forgot, Dells don't come with those sweet see-through cases and three thousand cold-cathode lights inside.

Is Alienware completely overpriced? Absolutely. But to thumb your nose at people who buy off-the-shelf is just being a douche.

Where did I mention a LapTop? I could give a shit about the spefic example. My generalization was based on the majority of people who buy from Alienware or any other 'high end' pre-manufactured systems.

In my opinion, everyone who says "dood I could build my own cheaper" is an asshole.

Well, you can have your opinion, even though it is wrong. You totally missed the point of my post. I'll elaborate more in a bit...

I know you buy those mobos and nics in such huge supply that you get the same pricing Dell gets..

See, you're missing the point and you obviously have zero clue what the fuck you're talking about. I was talking about 'high end' systems; not dells. I'm talking about machines that you tweak, overclock, and design for specific reasons like gaming, design, etc.

Find me a company that will build you a P4 3.4 (with decent cooling for OC), with 2 gigs of PC4000, an adjustable rail PSU, and put it all on a good Mobo THEN look at the pricetag. NOW, compare the SPECIFIC PRODUCTS that you get (brand and model) of those items and compare what you can get on your own.

If you can pull your head out of your ass far enough to see, you'll notice that the parts you get with any of those 'off the shelf' systems won't be as specifically tailored to your needs OR if they are you'll be paying considerably more for them.

FURTHERMORE, my point was that people who are buying any of these systems should go out and learn about what they're doing so when one of their fans craps out they don't smoke their new machine.

Oh wait I forgot, Dells don't come with those sweet see-through cases and three thousand cold-cathode lights inside.
Actually fucktard; they do. Then again, you weren't trying to make a point about the viability of those off the shelf high end machines, you were talking about modding cases. Nice point, asshat.

Is Alienware completely overpriced? Absolutely. But to thumb your nose at people who buy off-the-shelf is just being a douche.

I don't thumb my nose at the average user who goes out and buys a machine to use. I do thumb my nose at the average user who goes out and drops big money on a machine that they don't know how to use nor will learn how to use, just because they think they need a 'high end machine'. If they really needed the high end machine, they should actually learn about what the fuck they need and how to build it so they can really GET what they need instead of paying through the nose for something that is either over or under-kill.

Agreed! If you buy a highend machine from those manufacturers you should know the parts that are in there and not just assume that the parts inside are Highend when half of the parts in the machine are not High End.

Well you way overpaid for what you are using it for. I suggest get a couple of games. I just got a decent Toshiba that would suit your need for 1/2 the price.

Either way, it's a sweet laptop. Should last you a while.

I got myself an Acer Ferrari 3200: http://global.acer.com/products/notebook/fr3200.htm

http://global.acer.com/products/notebook/images/inner_main_fr3200.gif

Cost me $2000 from newegg but its a great laptop.

Mobile Athlon 64 2800+
Mobile Radeon 9700 128MB
512MB DDR PC2700 (I think) (2 banks of 256 both can be upgraded)
80GB 4200PRM (will get a 7200 RPM when the 80GB ones come out)
DVD Burner
Memory card Reader
Internal Wireless G (mini-pci) and bluetooth
4 USB2.0 ports and 1 firewire
1 PCMCIA slot
parallel and vga port in back
and it even came with an optical mouse and a copy of XP Pro (only legit copy I have)

I think its worth every cent and I'll be upgrading to XP 64bit once all of the drivers I need are available
