Now what happened with the online part of it?? The game was originally due out for Christmas but was delayed to get the online part tweaked... now they left it out all together? That sucks, I'll still be picking it up though. EB said they'll have it for sale tonight after 7 o'clock.

You can do a LAN set up for up to 6 PS2's. With all the delays and crap I hope this game kicks ass.

I just picked it up. I wish I could tell you how it is but my PS2 is too old and I'm getting that ever-so-familiar "Disc Read Error". :cussing

One method I've found to (temporarily) fix it is to take the case off and take a q-tip with a TINY bit of rubbing alcohol on it (basically it's just damp) and gently rub it on the laser lens...then rub it with the dry end and reassemble.
Make sure you keep all of the screws together as there are a couple of different sizes on the different sides.
Good luck!

thanks, tried that in the past a few times with no luck. although I did'nt use alcohol because I heard the lens is plastic and could wind up doing more damage but at this point I may as well give it a try... its not like I'd be ruining anything at this point.

Lasers don't go through plastic too well...the lens is made of glass.
Some retailers will do a trade-in on your busted system for like 30 bucks or so. Just getting a new one would make you so happy (I know it did me!) No more worrying about whether your games will play. It's great (although we really shouldn't have to worry about it...ahem...Sony) but it'll be worth your while.
I'm just sayin'...

I have found those lens cleaners to cause more harm than good.
If you have lost all hope, give this a try. It explains how to callibrate the lens.

yep, tried the lens cleaners with no luck. I picked up a new PS2 just now but I'm going to give that calibration thing a try and hopefully that'll do the trick so I can get my $150 back. Thanks guys.
The games pretty cool from what little I've seen of it btw.

Awesome game. As for the no online play, I remeber playing Halo 1 on my X-box online. You just need a LAN Tunneler. not sure if they have one for PS2 though. I think it was possible with XBox because it's basically a computer. The tunneler lets you connect to other people over the internet as though you were directly connected. Even if it doesn't work, the game is so huge that it doesn't matter in the long run.

yea they have one like the one for the original halo, for gran turismo4, so u will be able to play online, its just not supported by sony. no there is no ferraris in this one, but there is so much more than the last one. they have some old muscle cars, they have trucks, it has over 600 cars including the mclaren f1, which is a car to drool over ne ferrari, so do ur self a favor and pick it up, it will transfer the first 2 licences and up to 100,000 in credits if u still have the 3 ones game save. that way u don't have start out w/ a shitty car to begin w/

My PS2 had the seek problems too....at the time I had found a write up about how to fix it by advancing the white gear that determines the angle that the disc sits at.
If I recall, you open up the PS2...take the cover off the drive...trick the PS2 to eject the tray....this gives you access to the white gear....advance it like a little bit at a time until the PS2 reads discs again.
Later,

you guys call sony i got mine fixed for free. you call them they will ask you to do a diagnostic or whatever tell them disk read error comes up. they will send you an email where to send your ps2. and the warranty doesn't matter i had mine since ps2 came out.
The following thread was written by KabutoHunter at GameFAQs:

This is the number you need to call if you're getting DREs. Sony will fix it for free even without a warranty.
They will not fix it if you have installed a mod-chip. If you installed a one, just forget about getting this repair.
They will still fix it if you took the warranty sticker off. The warranty sticker isn’t actually important to this repair since it only voids the warranty when there is a warranty. Since most of the people taking advantage of this haven’t had a valid warranty in years it doesn’t much matter. But just to be safe, don’t mention anything about doing that or opening it up or anything when you talk to them. Also, if Sony repaired your PS2 in the past, but the DREs came back, don’t worry. They’ll still do this for free; they may even replace it with a new one. And don’t worry if you’re under 18 or anything, Sony doesn’t care what age you are. All that’s needed for this repair is a DRE infected PS2.
When you call up you need to talk to a real person. This is the Sony hotline, so there are a million recordings. Just listen for the option to talk to a Customer Service Representative and select that.
While talking to them, make sure you specifically mention that you’re getting Disc Read Errors. Those are the magic words; you won’t get very far without saying “Disc Read Error.” After this they will ask you some questions such as if you’ve used any devices such as a GameShark, answer no. They will also ask you if you’ve used a cleaning device on the game disc, the answer to this is also no. They ask a few more questions, but those are the two important ones.
Once you get the go-ahead for the free repair simply follow the instructions they give you. They’ll ask you if you want to write down the information or have them email it to you. I suggest having them email it to you since it’ll have the number that gets you the free repair already written at the top and it has all the blank spaces for you to fill in the necessary information so you won’t forget to put down anything.
The repair is free, but you will have to pay for shipping it to Sony. However, they pay for shipping on the way back. It can vary depending on what shipping company you choose, but with insurance it nearly always costs less than $10. Make sure you get insurance when shipping it, you wouldn’t want to lose your PS2 just so you can save a few dollars on shipping.
Once you’ve sent it off you can check on the status of your repair by calling up the number, going into the PlayStation 2 section, and then selecting the option that lets you check on your repair status. You enter in your phone number and it tells you when it’s assigned to a technician and after they finish the repair it tells you when it was shipped back to you.
The repair time is always very short. It always takes less than three weeks, and in most cases takes less than half that time. In my previous DRE topics people were reporting getting their PS2s back within a week, and a few people even got theirs back in only 2-3 days! Sony is really repairing these things fast!
This number also works in Canada, and you can get the free repair there as well. As for outside the U.S. and Canada, you'll need to call your own local Sony number to find out. The number will be located in your PS2 instructions in the warranty section. You can also find it on the package of any PlayStation accessory manufactured by Sony.
If you’re considering using an FAQ to try and fix the problem yourself, I might think twice about that. I mean, would you rather risk trying to repair it yourself (I’ve talked to many people who broke their PS2s with those FAQs), or would you rather have it professionally repaired by Sony completely free of charge in just a week or two? The Sony repair is so fast, free, and easy; there’s really no comparing the two.

Gran Turismo 4 is THE Driving Sim of Driving Sims, fuck Forza Motorsport. I played a final build of Forza and was not even close to impressed like i was with GT4. Forza Motorsport has no artifical Intelligence and the cars handle as if there were driving on ICE (the steering is just like Project Gotham Racing 2). The only saving grace for Forza is the online play but you can only play 8 people, stick with Gran Turismo 4 not Forza. GT4 was built around the cars that are in the game, every car has been modeled by the real life counterparts, Forza just has a ton of stuff you can do to the cars, but none of the cars sound like the real thing, they all have that one engine sound.

I think you are being a tad harsh about Forza. This (http://www.popsci.com/popsci/automotive/article/0,20967,1043197,00.html) article explains Forza's AI and how each car was modeled. I've beta tested the game and can concur. It's a great sim.
Not saying anything bad about GT4. If I had a PS2 I'd own it for sure.

i played a final build of the game (which is pratically the retail version) and it just had horrible handling, i read all the articles about this game in many different mag's and just do not see this game good at all. It has the engine from PGR2, plus even Microsoft and G4TV's Morgan Web has said this game has no AI what so ever. Need For Speed Underground 2, Ridge Racer for the PSP, and Gran Turismo 4 are by far the best racing games out on the market. Forza is just another flash in the pan from Microsoft. A racing game from microsoft that really was slept on bcause of PGR2 was Rallisport Challenge 2, this racing game was excellent. Still, Forza will not be this GT killer that Xbox Fanboys think, thanks for the article tho.

I dissagree but that's cool.:) For me, the best racing game on a console was MotoGP 2 for the Xbox. Not only was it fun to race with 15 other people, I got my name in the credits.:)
EDIT: after I posted last night I thought "Oh great! I'm gonna start some bullshit flame war" Thanks for the cool reply. I'm used to the game boards where a fight will break out just by saying hello.

Tokyo Street Racer-Zero and Rallisport Challenge 2 are my favs. The GT series is probably the best driving sim out, but it's not the greatest racer.
Was I the only one who didn't like GT3? They ruined everything that was good about GT2000. I want my endless supply of used cars to screw with and the number of low level races. The handling in GT3 was just freaking terrible compared to GT2000. Will GT4 be a return to GT2000?
