My cell phone has a GPS in it. My manual specifically says it does. Ant was dead wrong on this point.

SOME but not ALL cellphones have GPS in them. If a boss, parent, etc wants to track you, it costs between $5 and $10 a month per phone. No special software is required.

If you want to foil being tracked, either turn off the phone or put it inside a piece of copper pipe with two endcaps on each end. There may also be some kind of copper netting (flexible, like a purse) available.

Nextel has come out with GPS capability for their cell phones so that
companies can track their employees without installing expensive boxes in
the vehicles.

I didn't say cell phones don't have GPS. The caller said most cell phones have GPS.
Truth is they don't. Very few out there right now have GPS.

Then I stand corrected, sir. My hand's off to you. :action-sm

I was under the impression most phones had the *option* of turning on GPS or not- I think my Motorola v265, for example, has GPS settings such as '911 only' or 'All the time' in the settings menu...

Yeah, I believe you're correct NCG. My cell has the option to turn it off too. I think Sprint can manually override it though, in case of emergency.

Very few of them have them that are even active. I called Verizon asking about it and the pretty much laughed and told me they had no plans to use that feature anytime soon. I asked them why the fuck the salesperson pitched it to me, I was told, "it is a feature of the phone, he didn't mislead you".

Almost true - every phone made post 9/11 is required to have a GPS LOCATOR chip in them - all that does is allow Emergency-911 services to locate where the phone is when the number is dialed (and most phones you can turn this feature off). However, that being said, you are correct in that is is not a TRUE GPS. Only some phones have a true GPS and allow downloaded apps to take advantage of the feature. The Emergency-911 GPS LOCATOR chip is NOT getting signal from satelites but rather from the cell towers.

When he gets a call from any of the new phones, he can tell exactly where
the phone call originates. Helps them pinpoint where the problem is.

That is false.

the government deadline is 12/31/2005

-------------

Just to clear things up a bit, I'm a Nextel Repair Technician, By government law.. ALL cell phones produced after December 31, 2005 Must be GPS enabled for calling 911.

Most cell carriers have their own deadlines which are before the government deadline.

Not All cellphones are GPS enabled at this time, so Anthony IS correct.

The purpose of the government mandate is for you to be located if you call 911, however since the GPS MUST be built into the phones anyway, some carriers are selling tracking services with them.

Other ways of being locating on non-GPS enabled phones are exactly what Ant was talking about today which is triangulation of cell towers which will give your approximate position.

As of this moment, ALL phones currently produced by Nextel are GPS enabled.

Although some phones allow you to turn GPS services off, You CANNOT turn GPS off totally. It is ALWAYS ON for 911 purposes and cannot be bypassed by the end user.

I used to work for T-mobile

its called GRPS Global Packet Radio Service

It's what allows the new GSM cell phones to surf the web ect. it is also what allows your signal to be Triangulated using cell towers.

Nextel DOES have phones with GPS chips in them, but that's the only one I know of.

as far as non GSM phones (CDMA TDMA) I don't know.

My Motorola T720C (Verizon CDMA) is GPS-enabled. I called 911 to report an accident and they knew right where I was. Plus, the option is there on the menu to have it turned OFF, ON, or ON for 911 only.

The Nextels we have at work are also GPS enabled. My dickwad boss was looking to get the system where he could use them to track us, then he found out how much it would cost and then changed his mind.
