I remember Opie talking about possibly having a cover band competition.
What do you guys think of this and which bands would you suggest?

The best cover band I've ever seen or heard is a Montreal based band called The Musical Box. They recreate in painstaking detail, the Genesis shows from the early 70's when Peter Gabriel was still with the band.
All I knew about Genesis was "Invisible Touch" and other such crap. What I didn't realize was that there was a lot more to the original band than that. The Musical Box turned me on the music and have since grown to love Genesis' old stuff.
They've gotten so much attention for the quality of their shows that they've now played on stage with Genesis' guitarist Steve Hackett (during an encore at their Royal Albert Hall appearence couple years ago) and had Phil Collins sit in on drums (recently in Switzerland).

I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think "Invisible Touch" was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums.

It's very interesting hearing others' opinions on Genesis -- because since their music changed so much from the beginning to the end, different eras appealed to different people for different reasons. I understand what you say about the "artsy and intellectual" nature of the PG stuff. Self-indulgent comes to mind, too (when you consider songs like Supper's Ready at 23 minutes) but I never mind self-indulgent if the quality is there (hence my love of Phish and other bands not afraid of 20 minute songs).
I've recently started appreciating post-PG stuff (Squonk on "A Trick of the Tale" is fantastic) and I'm sure I'll find plenty to listen to.
At the risk of hijacking this thread, I'll stop here...

I'd rather see them do something for original bands. There are already so many "monsters of mock" shows already. I'm just saying.

Hopefully they do an unsigned band contest. Cover bands are cool but give the unsigned bands a chance.

i'm trying to get Battery (metallica) and War Pigs (sabbath) to send in their cd's. both from the chicago area. also there was a Creeping Death Band (metallica), who had the seal of approval from Lars himself, who was at the CDB show and said they sound just as good, if not better than metallica.
also, Sad But True: the internet metallica coverband may send in their cd.. half the band is here the US of A, the other half in europe. they've gotten some radio play, and sound amazing.

I'm tired of cover bans for the most part. An old band about 10 years ago I was in had to get our shit together so we wound up doing only covers and we did alright, and I've talked to Joe from Soft Parade (who does a nonstop Val Kilmer doing Jim Morrison impression). Enough with the cover bands! We have American Idol and weddings. How about a cover band lacking neccesary brilliance and destroying them on air & online?

I saw this really great Led Zeppelin cover band about 8 years ago called Four Stix. They had Zeppelin down solid.
The boys mentioned an Iron Maiden cover band. I hope that is Live After Death. I've seen them a lot and they are really, really good.
Master of Puppets is a good Metallica cover band.
