Class Dissection Of Live Dog Outrages Parents, Students
Student: 'It Just Makes Me Sick...'

POSTED: 8:12 am EDT May 12, 2005
UPDATED: 7:57 am EDT May 13, 2005

A biology class lesson in Gunnison, Utah involving the dissection of a live dog has outraged some parents and students, according to a report.
Biology teacher Doug Bjerregaard, who is a substitute teacher at Gunnison Valley High School, wanted his students to see how the digestive system of a dog worked
Bjerregaard made arrangements for his students to be a part of a dissection of a dog that was still alive.

The dog was still alive, but the teacher said it was sedated before the dissection began.

With the students watching, the sedated dog's digestive system was removed.

"It just makes me sick and I don't think this should go on anywhere and nobody's learning from it," student Sierra Sears said.

The teacher said the lesson would allow students to see the organs actually working.

"I thought that it would be just really a good experience if they could see the digestive system in the living animal," Bierregaard said.

The school's principal, Kirk Anderson, said notifications went to parents explaining the dog was going to be euthanized and that the experiment would be done with the dog's organs still functioning.

The teacher is standing by his decision and calls it the ultimate educational experience.

Principal Anderson said he supports the lesson and it will be allowed to continue because the students are learning.

The dog used in the experiment was going to be euthanized despite the class project.

Those are two VERY different statements. They lied to the parents or intentionally misinformed them (or the principal was intentionally misinformed by the teacher).

What really upsets me is not the dog but that not ONE student stood up and said no? Are schools really pumping out these fucking robots? I hate schools. I got into so much trouble on almost a daily basis for going against the system- constant detention and in-school suspensions for thinking for myself. Thank God I had the back-up of a suportive parent. Humanity, in-fucking-deed. Kill 'em all, they're useless.

Exactly. They all complain about how disgusting this was, but it didn't stop them from attending that day's lecture or sitting through the process. They knew about it prior to it happening, and they still showed up? Now they want to whine & complain to the news.

I wouldn't have thought twice about walking out of that class.

I honestly don't see any misdirection. "The dog was gonig to be euthanized and the experiment would be done with the dog's organs still functioning. " This means that the dog is scheduled to be destroyed and that before destroying it they will do a vivisection. You can't do the experiement on functioning organs if the dog isn't alive.

For the record, I don't see anything wrong with it either. If I'm going to die, and I know that I'm going to be sedated into a coma... go ahead and cut me up all you want for science/learning...

First of all this is high school, most if not all these kids will take nothing from the experiment and apply it to future use. If this were Vet school it would be totaly different.

I had a long reply about my experience in HIGHSCHOOL AP BIO and its affect and what I took away from it and the fact that you have no information on this class to make the assumption that they took nothing away from it, but the board took a shit and ate it.

Thats why I said most if not all, there is always the exception to the rule but in general I stand by what I said.

I never learned anything useful from dissections. They were always fun though.

Yeah, but you're all Dough, so we're not gonna get much out of it.

I am a dog lover to the end, but I also believe in science. If the death of that dog helps even one kid become something use full to society, than it was worth while. Quite frankly I’m sick and tired of these bleeding hearts crying about every thing that there kids are exposed to. “Ohh think of the children” (in the voice of Mrs Lovejoy) Ugg I hate that shit so much I cant even comment on it the way that I want to

With today's technology wouldn't it have been easier to show a computer simulation of how a puppy shits?

umm, like, dogs and animals have feelings and stuff... so you know, its like really bad to disect them and i'm like, you know, against it... even if like it is going to you know cure stuff like cancer and alzheimers and stuff... its like wrong you know...

I hate fucking people like that... they should be used for medical experiments...
I know that this story is about high school students and a bio class and not med school or researchers in a lab... but it is the same fucking mentality as those god damn white, suburban, liberals who have to much of their parents money and spend their fucking days protesting against whatever their college professors tell them to be agaist that week... they never take the time to think through their beliefs or what it means towards the greater good... take any issue that they protest on... war - they are agaist any war ever - there can't be a good war according to them... if world war II was goingon right now, these fuckfaces would be standing up defending the god damn Nazi's because their proffessor would be railing against the spread of Imperical American Power. these are the same fuckers who protest america and israel and side with groups like hamas, sadamn hussien and the taliban... they are the same people who support freeing MUMIA ABU-JAMAL!!! the same guy who killed a cop in Philly...
wow have i gone off on a tangent... but this shit pisses me off

My wife is a Veterinarian...I asked her if she has ever, in her way too many years of schooling, ever been involved in any capacity with a dog, and it's digestive tract removed for any of these exprerimental/educational purposes and she said "No"....

No, it's not. It's just a dog. An animal, a lower life form. Screw the dog. Would it have been better if it was a frog? We disected live frogs. Why is a frog better to disect? It's not. It's just a fucking frog. It's just a fucking dog. A dog that was going to die anyway.

After the disection they should have skinned it and butchered it so it could be made into a coat and meat for the homeless.
