To Launch Or Not To Launch? Cost Is The Sirius Question

As reported by TheStreet.com, Sirius Satellite Radio is considering the launch of another satellite while investors consider the cost.

After spending lots of cash to fund its thus-far, money-losing subscription radio business, Sirius now faces a big spending decision. Sirius is considering what to do with its fourth satellite, which currently sits on planet Earth serving as a backup in the event of trouble with any of its three orbiting satellites.

Bear Stearns analyst Bob Peck said in a research note this week that Sirius is weighing whether or not to launch the satellite early in an effort to boost its signal coverage.

Peck estimates that the launch, a new orbit and the reconfiguration of some gear could take most of a year and costs as much as $50 million.

Though Peck says launching the fourth satellite is a good move, he points out that it will put pressure on the company to raise more cash. Peck has a neutral rating on the stock.

The 20 seconds of old audio is bringing me back into the personal Nam that anyone who had to do that kind of radio, or has to still do that kind of radio. Having worked some small market radio, we would use a tape skimmer, essentially a tape deck set up to record everytime any mic is opened. You got your air-check. This was used to train you [yes, youd actually meet with prograaming and/or music directors on how to do this and what to say, often written out in detailed 'Top Secret' [cant let the other stations know how WE format our breaks!!] manuals. The horror...

The enthusiastic! backsell, followed by the enthusiastic station banter! traffic!, weather,! and then frontselling the next set of music!, at least the next song, and talking over it to hit the post! Make sure the first and last words out of your mouth is the station ID/call letters!! Bruuurrrrrgggg....

Some stations let you sound however you wanted, some PDs and MDs would have you make these tapes, hand them in, theyd listen and take notes, and then sit you down and then try to teach you the Radio 101 BS on how to sound like the Cookie Cutter FM Enthusiastic Jock. This was literal torture. The only worse torture I can imagine is being the PD/MD who listened to these.
