From Engadget: (http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000390044532/)
So the hot new feature on this Sirius satellite radio receiver is the ability to record and time-shift programs for later listening, courtesy of some built-in memory that will hold up to 44 minutes worth of content. The unit itself has also been redesigned with sleekness in mind, includes an FM transmitter and a new antenna, and will reportedly be available next week. Mad props to the individual who leaked the shots — not so much for leaking the shots, mind you (we can’t condone that, it would be, um, unethical, so we’re told) — but for the Humpty Dance reprazent, yo!
Now, I know some of you have already seen this since I see names like lil'connor and others like that in the comments section, but I think we need to show them the flaws of the Lil' doggy company and their screwed up technology.

a whole 44 minutes of recording time?????? i'm going to throw out my mifi and switch to sirius and get one of these... 44 minutes WOW!!
Ack.. I mean yeah I am an XM fan, I'm not going to hide that. but I just think Sirius' receivers are silly looking. They look like childrens toys.. I mean look at the SKYFi2 or the MyFi, very professional appearance and sleek. Tussalable if I may..
so 44 minutes of recording time, huh? Well that makes sense beacuse that's probably about how long Hoo Hoo's show will be each day after all the ads and other BS.
I invented recording, tell em Fred

It's not meant to be compared to the MyFi, it's meant to be compared to the SkyFi2. The SkyFi2 only records about a half hour.
Forty. four. minutes. Oh. my. god. I. am. just. stunned. and. speechless.

The pro-Sirius posts on that Engadget thread are laughable. They're actually buying Mel's drivel about bringing AAAAALLL of Howard's old advertisers with him *insert DeNiro laugh here*

I am laughing my ass off right now. How did they decide to make the capacity 44 minutes? Not 43... not 45... but 44. It makes me wonder if they drew that number out of a hat, or if they were desperate to get as many minutes that their lil chips could handle. Sirius is just being silly now.

They are only about what ... 8 months behind on that one.

The technology department at the doggie sems to based entirely on reverse-engineering (taking apart a competitor's product to see how it works, and then building your own version of it). But they're really not very good at it. The SkyFi 2 came out in October, and Chester finally gets their copy out now. The MyFi came out in November, and ol' bruised liver was in such a rush to release a copy of it that they forgot to make sure it could receive live broadcasts in portable mode. They'll have it working properly by this time next year . . . and only if you upgrade the unit. What a cluster-fuck.

This venture will surely give them the 500 million they need to drown themselves.
Good move Sirius. At this point, you're third in a two-horse race.

What I dont understand is that the doggy company had the brains and the science to send up satellites into outerspace, but cant create a good listening unit!! How big is that satellite anyway??
jc
You guys don't understand. 44 minutes perfect. That's the exact length of one of Howie's commercial breaks.
They're going to use the on-screen display to guarantee that it doesn't record while there is actual content being broadcast. It is only capable of recording commercials.

Call me Ricky, but am I missing something here? Is Luken confusing a transmitter and a receiver?
Call me Ricky, but am I missing something here? Is Luken confusing a transmitter and a receiver?
No. He's confusing an FM Modulator and an FM transmitter. Apparently, so does some of the manufacturers of XM equipment.
What Delphi refers to as an FM Modulator is really an FM transmitter. It takes the XM signal and retransmits it as an FM signal so people can listen through their FM radio.
An FM Modulator is similar. It creates the FM signal and feeds it to an FM radio via wire. On some of the XM receivers, like the XM Commander, the FM Modulator plugs into the car stereo, where the antenna is usually plugged in and then the original antenna plugs into a female jack on the same wire.

They were dogging on this unit on today's show and I have to be honest I do think they were totally right with the trashing of this unit. It is not designed to compete with the MyFi it is designed to compete with the SkyFi 2. Last time I checked my SkyFi 2 only stored about 30 minutes....so the 44 they advertise does beat the SkyFi.
The SkyFi 2 is a great unit that has been around a while now so the fact that they just now got time shifting means they are behind but the 30 minutes vs 44 minutes isn't that big of a deal what I would prefer is if it had some sort of battery that would allow it to receive signal for the 30 minutes so that when I get gas or run to the store I dont' have to keep the car running in order to pause the radio. A small rechargeable battery with 30 minutes of life would be awesome.
One more thing would be forward 30 seconds back 10.....I hate missing a comment and not have the ability to go back a few seconds to catch it again. (Well this went off on a tangent) Anyway the fact that they don't have a MyFi clone and that the SkyFi clone is so late still puts them way behind in the tech race.

The SkyFi2 can easily get up to 45 minutes depending on the bitrate of the channel. I routintely get 35 minutes + commercial breaks on 202.

Since the SkyFi2 is advertised as 30 minutes then couldn't the same be true of the Sirius unit. (44 minutes on high bit rate channel and more on a low bit rate channel)
