Marilyn Lemak was “delusional” and unable to separate memory from fantasy in the weeks after she killed her three young children, a clinical psychologist testified for the defense today at Lemak’s murder trial in Wheaton.

Dr. Ruth Kuncel, a clinical psychologist from Hinsdale, told the court that Lemak acted like a nurse as she performed what she considered a “healing process," sedating and then smothering her children, Nicholas, 7, Emily, 6, and Thomas, 3, on March 4, 1999.

“You have a mother who in her own disassociative, childlike way, was trying to avoid abandonment and trying to make them all happy,” Kuncel said, referring to Lemak’s pending divorce.

The psychologist was one of the last witnesses presented by the defense before it rested its case this afternoon. DuPage County Judge George Bakalis told jurors there would be no court Monday, and they would return Tuesday to hear closing arguments and then begin deliberations.

The defense seeks to convince jurors Lemak was insane, not knowing right from wrong, when she killed her offspring. It called Kuncel to counter testimony by other psychological and psychiatric experts who said they believed Lemak was sane when she killed her children.

Kuncel had been hired by Marilyn Lemak’s attorneys to conduct three days of interviews and testing two weeks after the slayings.

Kuncel told the court how Lemak described to her the drugging and suffocating of her children in an “exquisitely tender” way. Kuncel likened Lemak’s careful preparation for their deaths to a nurse preparing patients for surgery.

“This woman was a surgical nurse. What do you do in surgery? You premedicate, you help arrange the individuals, and you anesthetize them,” Kuncel said, putting her hand to her mouth as if to show jurors how Lemak smothered her children with her bare hands.

Lemak was suffering from “disassociation,” an inability to keep memories and fantasies separate, Kuncel said. Her client thought the breakup of her marriage with David Lemak, who had recently moved out of their Naperville home and was dating another woman, would leave her and her children abandoned.

In the days leading up to the murders, the psychologist said, Marilyn Lemak suffered from “an increasing sense -- and I think it’s delusional -- that their father does not care about these children.”

In remarks to jurors before letting them go home this afternoon, Bakalis warned them next week’s deliberations could go a long time. He suggested that each juror bring an overnight bag to court Tuesday.

As he has done several times during the trial, the judge ordered jurors not to read or watch any news accounts. He also advised that after three weeks of testimony, they give themselves a break.

“Please don’t even begin to think about this case,” Bakalis said. “Just use this weekend to relax.”
