I'm trying to find the best tasting mid price scotch. I drank the Jonny Walker Black and it does seem pretty harsh for a scotch. What in your guy's opinion is the smoothest scotch that you can get for 25-40 bucks?

Try Talisker 8 or 10 year old... if you like single malt scotch....

Well Talisker here is typically available at Vintages stores here (fancy pants government run liquour stores that carry a broader selection)... and typically I can only get it like 3 or 4 times a year as well.
Mind you they did have some 25 year old... but only $200 bucks CDN... for a 26 oz...:)

Well, problem is that 25-40 doesn't give you a lot of leeway if you want a really good scotch. While you can get decent blends for that price (actually, I prefer Johnny Red to Black, which is heresy, I know), in my humble opinion, single malts are better quality and taste than blends (like Johnny Walker, Dewars, etc.). I am fond of the smokier, peatier Island of Islay single malts; in particular, Laphroaig, Lagavullin and Oban (although the latter may not be Islay). They are all between 40-60 per bottle, with Lagavullin being the most expensive, and are all excellent choices (and would make good fathers day presents if your dad drinks).

yeah I'm not gonna go out of my way to get some good quality scotch although I should try it sometime. All I'm lookin for is run of the mill smooth scotch, if there is such a thing. There was this one scotch I had at my brother's wedding and if I can recall its name, i believe it was doors, but I'm not sure cause I heard alot of awful shit about doors. Any suggestion helps cause I really cant stand Jonny Walker its just like drinking Jack Danials, which isnt such a bad thing if you want to get shitfaced but I'm in the mood to get drunk in a classy way, nothing can beat a good scotch.

Here are some of the ones I like under 30 a bottle.

No disrespect to anyone who loves the Blue, but I've heard that it is the single biggest waste of money, booze-wise (overrated, etc.). In all honesty, though, I've never tried it.

Shit, now I'm thinking about cracking this bottle of Chivas I've had awhile. It's old as hell. My unc gave it to me a few years ago and he had it for
probably 20 yrs. It does have a weird flavor unlike the Johnnie Walkers.

This thread makes me happy.
If you don't like Johnny Walker Black I don't know what to say, but for me when it comes to quality in the price range, that's the best I see. If you're willing to go up to $40 or so, you can't really go wrong with Glenfiddich though. I'd suggest to check that one out and see what you think, you can get the 8yr. I think for about $30-$35.
My personal favorite, almost regardless of price is Oban, it does run $50-60 a bottle but to me it is absolutely worth it.
I've had the Johnny Walker Blue on two occasions, and I can say it is definitely superior to any scotch I've ever had. If you're in a situation where you can con someone to pay the $35 or so it is for a glass in a restaurant, defintely take them up on it. Whether or not it's worth the $200/bottle, I'm no so sure.

Well this one you might like if you like single malts sir... funny enough Johnny Walker actually owns the distillery so when u drink the red... blue... black etc... u might be drinking some Talisker sir...
K I have loved this scotch for like I dunno 10 years... first time it appeared was like $25 bucks CDN (for 8 year old)... now for 10 year old $65 bucks CDN... same shit... so what the fuck with the price increase... yeesh

Yes I do have an affinity to bourbon... like Knob Creek, Makers Mark... etc... but if you go into some "chain" restaurant Ummm Applebees or what ev what are the chances they have premium booze... not being a snob... but after a desert I like a snort of summin good... pref a good scotch or bourbon yada yada... if you just want to get drunk... drink Everclear... yeesh
This is what pisses me off... local restaurants are being wiped out by large chains... read an article in Playboy about home town where Wal-Mart is...Bentonville, Arkansas... if you ask where can you get like local BBQ and shit... you are directed to the main strip where these chain restaurants are... k that is not right... best meal I ever has recently was in a road side cafe in Alabama... chicken fried steak... with red eye gravy... mashed potatoes... fried ochra... and creamed corn... not gourmet by any standard but a really good meal... good luck finding that at your local chain restaurant...

One thing to also keep in mind is that it is not unheard of (or, depending on where you live, uncommon) for bars/restuarants to fill name bottles (i.e. Johnny Black) with shit scotch. Usually happens at bars where they assume the clientelle won't notice (i.e. 20-something bars) or where the liquor itself (Vodka) can be switched without someone knowing. I've actually been to bars here in NYC where they had the balls to serve me "Johnny Red" (scotch) which was unquestionably bourbon. If you know anything about scotch and bourbon, they are NOT even remotely close.
As a rule of thumb, the better the bar/restaurant, the less likely this will happen.

Bringing this back for a quick story, was at a restaurant in the city last night that any scotch drinker needs to go to, Keens Steakhouse (36th and 6th). They have about 200 single malts available. I was going to try your Talisker 18 but based on what I said I liked the waiter suggested Aberlour A'bundah cask strength. I'd never heard of it but it was very good stuff, he also mentioned a liquor store on Madison (but perhaps 3rd) between 45th and 55th (I know not the best directions) but he said they have a great selection if you're looking for good single malts.

Alcohol is taxed by proof....so brown Forman (company that owns JD) saves money by lowering the proof. Also, they use water to cut the proof which means the can make more jack Daniels. Again....more money for Brown Forman.
