It's not just the spyware within Kazaa itself, probably 90% of all the files traded on p2p is infected with one thing or another. Every time I get something off there, McAfee and AdAware go crazy. I just get from usenet and BT. Much less infection on there.

Screw Kazaa and it's variants! Go with WinMX. The only problem with that is there don't seem to be as many sharers as Kazaa.

But for the record, I've never gotten anything illegal from either program.

Question for you torrent pests... Why is it whenever I try to download one... I only get speeds of 5 or 6 kbps? Yes... Five and Six. Not 500 or 600. I'm getting 56k modem rates! It can't be a port thing, right? Because I *am* getting data... just slow.

Any ideas?

If the color indicator stays yellow and never turns green, it is a port forwarding issue. If it stays yellow, then the tracker cannot see how much you have uploaded and it will always give you the slowest speeds because it assumes you are a leecher.

9/10 times your torrent will always start slow. The torrent will slowly start to get faster as you start to upload to others. Also, get a bittorrent client like BitTornado that will allow you to adjust the upstream. Never have you upload maxed out or it will cause your download speeds to crawl. If you have 128k up on your dsl, then set the upload to around 10-12k. This will allow you to get the full download speeds.

You have to turn on port forwarding with your router...

Here is a website that talks about port forwarding http://p2p.weblogsinc.com/entry/0401842428674831/

and another
http://userpages.umbc.edu/~hamilton/btclientconfig.html

These will show you how to port forward. This tells your router that it is ok to move the torrent data through certain specified ports instead of forcing it all throught your internet web port. This way you can receive and send data. Half of the problem with firewalled BT sharing is that your firewall/router won't allow others to see how much of a torrent you have, and what you need so you can only get a bit of data that you send a specific request for, instead of a 150k download you end up with 5-10k....remember, your upload speed will be directly proportional to your download speed, but you never want to upload at your max...Ie. I have dsl that has a max upload speed (by law) of 16kbps...so if i set bittorent to max upload of unlimited it will use up every bit of that 16k...so i set it to 10 k and save the rest for my net traffic, and what not..otherwise pages wont load because in order for a page to load you have to send data back that tells the server what you have so far....Any Q's Let me know...always happpy to help a fellow BT user!

What law? I've never heard that... Are you thinking of the modem's max of 56K? That limit was set by the FCC to prevent noise on the lines.

It isn't a law, just basic math. 128 kilobits per second is about 15 kilobytes per second. You do not want to max out your upload speed because it will drop your download speed to something similar to your upload.

In addition to checking port forwarding on your router, you may want to check your software firewall if you're using one. I just built myself a new PC and for some reason when I tried to use BT with ZoneAlarm on my PC it wouldn't get the speed it was supposed to be getting, even though I had port forwarding on the hardware firewall and had the BT programs permission to go through ZA. I couldn't figure it out for the life of me no matter what ports or IPs or apps I granted access to in ZA, but when I shut down ZA BT worked fine. A little P2P forum searched showed that a lot of people were having problems with BT on newer versions of ZA, so that pretty much confirmed everything for me.
Switched to Sygate and all was well.

Don't download any .zip, .rar, or .exe files, especially on torrents. They'll pack friggin' spyware/adware shit in there like crazy.

A rar file is usually ok. Just make sure you are able to identify the files inside the archive.

before you do ANYTHING - download and update a copy of PeerGuardian.

Then use Azureus.

Then go here ---> http://www.torrentspy.com/

For individual songs, I used to use Kazaa lite, but there are too many bad files: blanks, loops, songs that turn into that godawful screeching halfway through, and those stupid Ipod ads. I switched to BearShare Lite, and it kicks ass. I can't recommend it enough. Quick downloads, no bundled spyware and I've never downloaded a file that wasn't perfect. I like it so much that I even bought the BearShare t-shirt to support the site.

For big files like movies I use Bit Torrent, but the goddamn torrent sites are being shut down at an alarming rate. :icon_frow
