An instrument is not about how it looks, but how it sounds when it is played. I don't see how there is anything "gay" about the instrument.

But seriously, I still stand by my previous post. Close your eyes and listen to the instrument being played. That is really what it is about. I say this, knowing of the existence of the drumitar, an instrument that I hate beyond words, but I still believe it.

It's a whole different instrument, really. The Chapman Stick is a 'Tapping' Instrument, to get a note you just tap the string onto the fret; more of a hammer-on, technically. No picking involved, so both hands can be fretting the neck; so skilled guys can be playing a bass riff with one hand and laying a lead over it with the other.
It does indeed look utterly uncool in that pic, especially that neck thing, so Mark Warr started Warr Guitar and started putting out tapping instruments that are worn like a guitar:

This has 8 strings, from a low B, up fourths across the neck, so thats a five or six octave range, and it can move furniture when hooked up to whats behind it.
