I just bought a nice lil Mesa/Boogie and I'm liking it more and more everyday. But it's a large jump up from my previous 15w Fender practice amp (although I ran a BOSS MT-2 through it so it wasn't total crap). I've been wanting to record what I play more and more and then maybe mix it or put it together to make full songs just for fun. I'm looking for any advice from someone who does what I'm looking for: setting a mic up next to your amp, running it into the computer (is it possible to do it that easily), and then editing it. What you use, any resources you know of, what you recommend, anything like that.

Well done of getting a Mesa-Boogie; amazing amps.

For computer? Yow. There's two world's, and one doesnt involve the Mesa at all. I guess you know this, but there's some amazing amp-modeling effects [Line 6 Pod, for example], that have amazing emulations of your amp, and others, and have USB connectivity and all that.

You own a Mic and computer recording software? Don't know if you have stuff in hand or are checking stuff out. Micing amps to record guitar is very hard, you need great mics, an amp that's stable and not noisy, and mic placement, room acoustics, and all that add up to so much that many opt for the non-amp option above.

The pros swear by mic-ing real deal amps but they can afford the rooms the mics the $$$$$...

Wow looking at that? No help whatsoever, just two paths. Again, dont know what gear you have.

thanks, i bought a '92 dual recto and its awesome. im still tweaking it and breaking in my v30s, but im happy with the purchase.

i was afraid of getting your answer http://www.wackbag.com/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif monetarily, it seems most feasible to go with the effects processor straight into the computer like you mention and keep the amp for live stuff or messing around on because i certainly dont have enough money (especially after buying the mesa) to afford the other option. thanks man

a good way to go about it is to buy yourself an M-Box - it is a computer interface with 2 xlr-1/4 inputs... it comes with a version of protools and if you buy 2 good mic - or even a basic Shure SM-57 - you will get a very good recorded sound... the entire package w/ mic and cable will cost you around $600

does ur m/b have a recording output jack? I have a m/b mark iv that makes it very convenient to record. there's also a program called amplitude that has tons of amp sims and all u need to do is plug ur geetar directly to ur pc.

BAM, yeah the M-Box is indeed an amazing little unit.

I'd dare to say it's almost *too* good for what might be a simple guitar recording project; coz, as ya know, M-Box means using and learning Pro Tools, and the M-Box needs a lot of computer power [and storage] to do it's thing, which is the good news, coz it does just about anything; practically unlimited multitrack recording at 24-bit uncompressed resolution. Major artists are making and releasing albums done almost entirely using laptops and M-box's and whatever they can plug into the damn thing.

The other good point is, at least right now, for pro recording, learning Pro Tools, some would say, is essential. It's far and away the pro industry standard, and there's all kinds of software bundles available for amp sims [I think the Amplitude mentioned already is one, and highly rated], reverbs, EQs, and all the pro audio goodies audio-nerds like me love.

What does a State flag have to do with the KKK? The Stars and Bars was a Confederate BATTLE flag, not a racist symbol and your name is TOBY. :icon_mrgr
