I have a video of a comedian buddy of mine breaking the neon sign on the stage of Charlie Goodnights in Raliegh, NC. The break is pretty uneventful and I'd like to add an excessive amount of sparks, flash, etc. to make it much more embarassing for him. Any suggestions for software that will easily tackle this project? Or does anyone want to take it on?

you won't find any software that will 'easily tackle' this. and if you manage to get your hands on the software needed to do something like this, chances are you'll have no clue how to use it.

and if you do figure it out, chances are it'll still look like shit.

That could be very cool to do. I do that work for a living. FX designs, Animations, all types of video effects.

You will need Adobe After Effects to do what you want.

Good Luck as it has a steep learning curve if you've never done anykind of Photo/3D or video editing before.

After Effects is ok but I have access to a Discreet Flame* system, And it's one of the best systems for this type of work. What After effects can do this will do 90% faster.

Apple Shake is also not bad for doing this kind of stuff....Of course if you got access to one of the big dogs ala Discreet Flame it will save you a ton of time. If you don't have access, you can use After Effects or Shake but depending on what you want to do might need a pretty juiced up computer.
