My familiy is thinking of getting Verizon DSL. I was wondering what extra charges are added to the monthly price. I'm just wondering if Verizon will **** us on the taxes/charges like they do with my cell phone
Also, we're getting rid of AOL, and I was wondering how hard it and what is involved for those who did the same thing to transfer over all your info from AOL to MSN (my dad is worried about all the emails he has saved, since he has important geneological info on it he needs for his research).
(oops I just realized this was in the wrong forum. I apologize and please move to teh proper forum)

he should forward his emails to a new account. he can also save them.
I had DSL and its like 50 a month after all promotions plus tax, so maybe like 60 and change. I now have cable just because it was cheaper to have local and long distance cable tv and cable online for like 115

How much do you pay for DSL? JESUS CHRIST!!! It is 29.99/month here (Massachusetts) if you bundle it with verizon long distance (which i have never actually needed to use), caller ID, call waiting, voice mail, and you also save $5 off you verizon mobile plan...So for all my phone services I pay about $75/month....
Maybe the pricing is different in the NYC area, but wow...Look into the bundling plans to save $...and DON'T get the AOL plan where you use your own service for $12.95 or whatever...Have fun cancelling AOL they will offer you their first born to try to keep you...at least thats how it use to be... :)

Most of those 'taxes' and other bullshit fees are a result of Al Gore. Yes, the father of the Internet is the who pushed those taxes through congress, something about giving Internet access to the inbred hicks.

thanks for the info, I"m getting the one year DSL contract from Verizon where it's 19.95/month the first three months and 29.99/month the rest of the contract. It also comes with a modem/router, and my sister got a card for her comptuer and a USB braodband adaptor for my dad's descktop.
I found out AOL gives a break if you have braodband, so my family is keeping their AOL email addresses, but not me....fuck AOL, I'll use MSN that comes with the DSL service
One more thing, when they turn on the service (next Tuesday), how hard is that going to be to get all three comptuers to run on the DSL line? Jsut wondering since someone told me it can be a big pain in the ass to fo

You'll need a router and some Cat5 cables to hook up all the computer or wireless cards if you want a wireless router.
The instructions are pretty clear, just input all the right data (account #, password).

A couple weeks ago I got Verizon DSL. It went fairly well, but at one point I must have missed the instruction to turn off my firewall. I don't know, but it got hung up, customer service was good (during the voice mail hell phone system I said, "Live person!!!" and actually got right onto the live person queue). It wasn't that big of a deal, and they got me set up without issue. Not once did I feel like throwing the modem out the window (like I did with cablevision).
Once I got it up & running, I then hooked up my wireless router. If I can do it, anyone can. :icon_bigg

SO I need to get rid of my zonealarm firewall on all three of these computers?
and the card and USB adaptor for the other computers seem straighforward to setup according to their instructions. Now the only bad thing is i have to wait UNTIL THE FUCKING 2ND OF AUGUST TILL IT'S TURNED ON!!!
this weekend is going to be painful with everything in the house and I have to wait.

Dial up stinks. I don't do the dsl, I have Comacast Cable, but once you get
broadband you'll never go back. Dial up is so, 20th century.:icon_bigg

I had something odd happen today. this after noon my sister's wireless connection wasn't working (the card worked, just wouldn't connect with the network) this also happened with my dad's desktop, after a while I turned off the modem and turned it back on and everything worked again. Has anyone ever had this happen before and does anyone have any explaination for it?

It usually is a power interuption thing. If the voltage gets too low in your
area, then the modem goes blank. I have had it happen a few times during the
summer months because of high demands. Rebooting has always fixed it.http://www.wackbag.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

I have DSL 3.0 from verizon and is faster and a lot more constent then cable. It is 29.99 and they don't charge $5.00 a month to lease the equipment. Hell if you are a customer for a year it is yours, if not you return it. I have only had a couple interuptions in the 16 months I have had it. Plus with verizon I get $7.00 a month taken off for my Direct TV.

Unless you have a static IP your IP address can change from time to time.
This happens to me every once in a while and it requires me to reboot the modem.

Are you using a wireless router? I had to restart my modem at least twice a week until I figured out that just refreshing network connections and reconnecting always worked too.

I've had Verizon DSL for like 5 years now, if not longer. It's been great. I reboot my modem and router once a week just to prevent any issues.
