Garofalo to Guest Star on 'The West Wing'
Updated: Monday, Aug. 22, 2005 - 4:23 PM

NEW YORK (AP) - Janeane Garofalo will guest star as a controversial media strategist on NBC's "The West Wing" this fall. Garofalo's character, Louise Thornton, is hired by Democratic Congressman Matt Santos (Jimmy Smits) as the new director of communications for his presidential campaign.

She urges Josh Lyman (Bradley Whitford) and the other staffers to stop playing politics and start concentrating on connecting with the electorate.

Her first appearance is expected to air Oct. 2, NBC said in a statement. The new season of "The West Wing" will premiere Sept. 25 (8 p.m. ET).

Garofalo, 40, was a cast member of NBC's "Saturday Night Live." Her screen credits include "The Truth About Cats & Dogs" and "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion." She also has been a political commentator on the Air America Radio network.

Her manager, Kara Welker, said Monday that because of Garofalo's commitments to Air America and "The West Wing," the actress has postponed plans to write a book on politics. A deal with Simon & Schuster was announced last year, but no contract was signed.

You wouldn't golf on a soccer field, Sir. There's two forums just a couple sections down from this one where it would fit just nicely.

I used to like West Wing, even with it's blatantly left slant. And I still liked it... right up until ABC wisely put Alias up against it.

Jennifer Garner's titties always wins out over politics. Always.

Not necessarily true. I can hear Jimmy go off on a slight rant about her...saying the "comedian turned pundit, is a crock" thing.

It may be funny.

Janeane Garofalo is what is wrong with the Democratic party. Instead of relying on the smart people within the party to get their message out, they rely on pieces of garbage like her. This last presidential campaign was such a joke, because so many hollywood people came out against Bush. I don't give a shit what Garofalo, Sean Penn, Dave Mathhews, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Newman, Tim Robbins, Jane Fonda, Susan Sarandon, Al Franken, etc. have to say about ANYTHING political. They are worthless entertainers, and they need to realize that. Nobody really cares about them or their views. In fact, I make it a point to boycott anything they do now, just because they were so pompous and self-righteous during the election. The democrats tried to hard to align themselves with those people, and I think it backfired. I think enough people got sick of the almost 2 years of constant Bush bashing that they voted for him just to shut those arrogant fucks up. I know that played a part in my vote. That and the fact that Teresa Heinz is one of the most awful human beings ever unleashed on this planet. Like I said, if the democrats would have stuck to the intelligent people in their party to make statements and set agendas, we may being talking about President Kerry, not Bush.

How they got Teraysah out of Teresa I'll never know. It's kind of difficult to attack the Repubs. as "the party of the rich" when your wife has ketchup money.

The Democrats haven't had a platform other than "Republicans are evil" in the last few years. Rather than offer an alternative set of ideas, they bitch and moan about how "Republicans hate children, wildlife, and freedom, in that order."

I really like the west wing. Recently it hasn't been as good as it was a few years ago but I still watch it. Now with this hole joining, I know that she will just be awful.

That's the funniest line in the article. If she would do that in REAL LIFE then maybe the Democrats would have a chance.

Comedians, Musical Artists, and Actors/Actresses already have a forum through which they can dispel their political garbage..ON STAGE, IN THEIR SONGS, AND IN THE MOVIES THEY PICK. When they stray from their claim to fame to suddenly switch to some dumb political opinion not using their comedic genius, their music or their role choices they just turn out to be irrelevant to me in every which way. Everyone's a fucking political analyst nowadays.

This cunt, rage against the machine, and susan sarandon, etc. etc. :icon_roll

As long as the democrats think that anyone in Holywood can connect with the vast majority of the American people, or that the American people care what actors, singers, comics think about polatics. They will continue to lose ground in the congress, gov's and the courts.

So you're saying you're more worthy of a vote then those "worthless entertainers"? Their opinions are totally worthess because they don't like bush? I don't hear you complaining about all the fuckstick country singin' tards that sang their "worthless" opinions touting bush. I'd argue some dickbag with a ten gallon hat and a red, white, and blue painted guitar on a stage singing his political stance in front of a 10 story high digitally projected waving american flag is far more annoying than someone like garafolo.

atleast they are doing their job, singing and playing music. Garafolo is a comedian and her job is to be funny, which she is failing miserably at.

Well.. no, I'm not saying that. Toby Keith really didn't need to be spouting off his political views either. As far as the American flag stuff, he's being patriotic. He may have had ulterior motives for doing that, but here's the huge difference: As far as I know, Toby never actively aligned himself with the Republican party. Most of the left-wing entertainers were prominent parts of the Kerry campaign, and my point was that I think it hurt them. Hell, the night before election day Bruce Springsteen held a free concert here in downtown Cleveland which Kerry spoke at. It was basically a couple hours of Bush bashing and not much else.

I have a serious problem with entertainers thinking that the average American gives a flying fuck about their political views, be they Republican or Democrat. They are basically there to put out their craft, be it comedy, music, movies, etc., and when one of them goes away, another steps right in to take their place. They are useless in the grand scheme of things. If they want their political views to be taken seriously, they should run for office.
