Why is it ok to make fun of Katrina on this board but 9/11 was sacred for years after the even, yes we were attacked and living in NY I saw the devistation first hand. However making fun of Katrina and people that are looting is hilarious and Ill probably get bashed for this but Katrina is far more devestating than 9/11 you could leave the Trade Center and go home where you could feel some kind of normalcy and be with family. Meanwhile people in Katrinas path lost everything they owned and are living in stadiums or shelters and I know Ill hear well one is an attack and the other people had warnings to leave, but if youre living paycheck to paycheck thats not really feasible..As far as looting goes its easy sitting in your house typing on your computer in your air conditioning that they are savages when most of the people here would be doing the same things, you have nothing no food, no water, no clothing...if youre walking thru water for miles to get to the superdome and need shoes go for it..all the merchandie is going to be written off anyway its not like they can open up and sell wet clothing or shoes anyway...Ill take my soapbox and go home now

While I dont think that either should be made fun of, the real difference I see is that with Katrina, everyone is making fun of the people who lived through it and are still there, not the ones killed.

With every hurricane there are going to be people who stay put either because they have no where else to go, or they physically cant go anywhere. When the total number of deaths comes up (which some are already predicting to be in the thousands) it might not be as funny to everyone.

I think everybody at the time jumped the gun. saying No was spared etc....and not untill way later after that day was the effect known..AS the differnce between 9/11 and this is the suprise 9/11 also even though the towers and the pentgon are huge places you speaking a much wider and massive cleanup effort now and after any hurricane....

Back to my original point that this is just as devestating as 9/11 yet all you hear about is looting, its easy to sit back in your comfortable conditions and bash people who are trying to survive by any means necessary, as far as people shooting and going crazy Im sure if you put 25,000 people in a football stadium for any length of time with no food or water youd snap too...hell I go to jets games and want to stab half the people sitting around me and thats only a few hours..

I was born in Gulfport Memorial Hospital. My family has been in Biloxi for generations. I graduated from Biloxi High. I worked in the casino industry in my home town for about seven years or so. I later moved to New Orleans, lived there for a few years, and now I live in an outlying suburb of Baton Rouge.



This has been one of the worst weeks in my entire life.



I did not know if my father and stepmother had survived, as they had decided to stay at their house, which is a block off the beach in Biloxi. I only found out that my dad made it through alive when I saw a CNN article with a bit about him and some quotes. Last night I finally heard through some of my stepmom's family that they managed to make it to a shelter here in Louisiana.



I would hope that most of my New Orleans friends were out of the city when the storm hit, as most of them are the type that would heed evac warnings. For all my friends and family in Biloxi, I don't know....us Biloxians have been through so many hurricanes that it is not uncommon for us to ride out the storm. You have to grow up in a place like that to understand it.....I know many people try to accusse the victims of placing themselves in harms way, but again if you haven't lived through these type of things in the past, you just can't fathom how it becomes just another factor in your life that you have to face from time to time.



New Orleans is such a special place in my heart as well, and my girlfriend has family there....she has been able to contact some of them since the storm passed. I cannot watch the news anymore, because I gets knots in my stomach. I'm not ashamed to say that yesterday afternoon I ended up vomiting because of the tension in my stomach because of the video coming out of New Orleans.



Baton Rouge itself is swamped with refugees from the affected areas. There has been carjacking and robberies around this area as well. I am extremely concerned about my g/f driving back and forth to work by herself.



I can only hope that things start getting better soon.

The people who have suffered from this tragedy, my friends and family, were people who haved braved numerous storms before, because it is a part of living here.
