I'm finally leaving on the 17th. I ended up saving my money and now have about a grand to spend on shit. :) I'm so ready to move out from my moms house and meet new people/party/go to football games.

Is there anything I should know about it or bring with me? Should I even bother joining clubs or anything?

Go on, give me advice. I pardon you :action-sm

if you are spending your own cash on them, do not buy books until after a few classes. Some classes you can get by without buying all the books they say to and that could save you some scratch to spend on beer and box

If you don't have a car, make friends with someone who does.

Girls talk. A LOT.

Free condoms are your friends.

and most importantly...GO TO CLASS. don't fall into the party lifestyle and flunk out.

That's what I was going to say. I'm going to sound like a Dad here but go to class, study and take advantage of this opportunity. It can possibly make the difference between working at a video store and doing something you really want to do and making some decent money.

(i know there are plenty of folks that didn't go to college and do just fine)

doing well in college isnt about how smart you are, its about how hard you work. do your homework and your readings, study for tests, and go to class and you'll do fine.

as far as socially it always helps to join any sort of organization and just be open to meeting other people; get used to cheap beer too

Absolutely. It worked for me. I busted my ass in college and i haven't had to do a day of "real work" since.

Now for the other shit. #1 Priority is to find a hookup for your vices, whatever they are. If you're a pothead, find a hippie. If you're a drunk, find someone with agood fake id or get your own. If you're a sex addict, find a booty call, even if it has to be a slob at first. Best thing about bootycalls is that you can always trade up.

Don't spend any money on fast food or restaurants,
EVER (unless you're trying to bang a chick). "Borrow" from the dining hall. Always bring a backpack to the caf and get shit for nighttime when you'll be hungry. This works best if you have a caf that you pay one price and just get food. If not, your meal plan is already paid for so you might as well use it.

DON'T JOIN A FRATERNITY. At a big school like yours you don't need to struggle to find freinds. Frats basically pigeonhole you into one group of friends for your college career. Not to mention they're expensive.

Find a friend with a car. Find another with a mom with a membership to some wholesale place (sams, bjs, costco, etc). Go every once in a while to stock up on shit for your dorm. You know how cheap a case of ramen is???

Find a roomate you don't want to kill. Every roomie will get on your nerves about one thing or another. Finding one that you can tolerate 80% of the time is awesome.

Clubs in college usually suck unless it's something you are REALLY REALLY passionate about. And they're usually not organized well anyway. Waste of time.

If you play a sport do intramurals. Good way to meet people and usually lots of drinking after games. One of my craziest memories from college is when I broke a girl's nose playing flag football. I rock.

Learn to take up cardio exercise. Best place to meet chicks. The rec center is crawling with 18yo chicks who have been conditioned by our society that they have to lose 20lbs no matter what they look like. Easy pickins.

good luck bro

The most important thing (in serious mode) is to make sure you do all the work. No one cares if you do or don't so you have to have some discipline. Go to classes (sober!), study, and do the homework. After that you'll have plenty of time for weed, beer, and chicks. Just the fact that you'll be with hundreds of other kids the same age doing the same age means you'll meet folks to hang with.

Try not to fuck it up. Trust me, as someone who knows, it's really hard to get your shit together years later.

^^^^that is the real lesson...^^^^

if you put in your 4 or 5 years of work (all that means is doing homework on weeknights instead of getting fucking wasted) you can cruise through your 20's and keep partying. Don't worry there is always Thursday through Sunday to drink your face off.

Get used books if they are in good shape to save money.

Bring sport/exercise equipment.

Host parties early on for people in your dorm/building.

Hide beer somewhere safe.

Make friends with whoever your dorm supervisor is.

Get involved with clubs.

GO TO EVERY CLASS YOUR FRESHMAN YEAR!!! or else drop out now.

Get a nice computer with a big Hard drive(80+GIGS), a nice processor 2+ GHz, atleast 512 MB RAM, gfx card(128MB+), ethernet card, etc. www.openoffice.org has a free alternative to MS office if you can't afford it/get it.

Get a nice calculator. 89 Titanium if you are going to use math a lot. But make sure your class will allow you to use the calculator.

If you have to get high/wasted, wait till Fri/Sat.

Ohio colleges have a program that you can get MS Office for like $20. I think they'll give you Windows for $40 as well.

Not sure, it's been awhile since I worked in Admissions.

I just graduated college with an associates degree in network management (computer networks), 2 years, i had like a month off from graduating highschool, u busted my ass, and i'm finally takin some time off, but my workplacement counselor can hook me up with a job that pays starting 50-60g's a year for doing shit, if i want to make more i just gotta get some certifications.

the only advice i can think of right now is, don't skip any classes, once u start...it's hard to stop. oh and if u think ur gonna fail a class, drop it, and take something else if u can or try to get another professor if u think that'll help.

Good point. Find out when your 100% reimbursement date is as well as your final withdrawl date from classes.

usually you can have a week or so in a class, realize its going to suck, and opt out or add/drop classes and not pay any tuition penalty. Also if you go through a course and it looks like you're gonna fail or get a D (especially in a major-related course) you can withdraw. Most schools with replace a W on a transcript with the grade you get the 2nd time around.

THIS IS SOME KILLER ADVICE !!!

I went to a military school ... yeah, I know what your thinking but, it did have it's own charms and pluses (ROTC scholarship).

I played rugby, which was considered a “club” sport and had the absolute best of times with those animals. Thirteen years later, they still are some of my closest friends. 1st class year we drove down to play in the Mardi Gras tournament - pure sickness.

Pick a major that interests you and that can earn you some $$. At least pick a minor that you can use. Unless you want to go on the 5+ year plan, don’t switch majors after freshman year.

Many folks mentioned the work and study side. I agree. You got a ton of jerk offs here in NYC with NYU degrees working as waiters or store clerks because their grades sucked or they majored in early Mesopotamian history. Besides, it gets you used to the working life. Myself, I busted my chops Sunday afternoon through Thursday afternoon. I planed my sched for late Friday classes or labs so I could sleep in and recover from Thursday night.

College is a great training ground for life. Work hard and party hard. Good luck!

How true ! I took Calc III, three times. For the first two times, everytime I got to Series and Sequences, I just couldnt wrap my head around it, my grades crashed and I dropped the course. Third time was a charm but, when the finals came up I was out of sequence with the rest of the students. One day I was talking with my Prof (BTW, he was retiring after that semester) and we were trying to schedule my final so that it would not conflict with his or my schedule. After about 20 minutes, he pulls out his grade book and starts flipping through it.

"What grade do you think you desrve?"

"B+ sir" (remember I was in a military school)

"D"

"B- sir"

This went on for a bit and we settled for a C-. When I checked the posted grades, he had given me a C+

Thanks Prof "S" :icon_bigg

a lot of kids don't realize their options or the consequences of their actions, esp straight out of highschool.

u've probably heard from every teacher since u were 5 "wait till u get to college, it'll be a lot different, blah blah blah" yes it's true, the teacher/professor's don't give a shit about u, if u display an unwilling attitude toward the class. Which is understandable, cuase unless it's a college requirment or a major class, u really don't have to be there, drop it and find something else.

Yes, there are professors who are aboslute fuckheads, but for the most part if ur not attending class or doing ur work, ur the one losing the arguement no matter what. Ur paying tuition, ur paying to be in that class, ur paying for the books, so ur paying for him to teach u. if u don't like it, get out. He doesn't give u ur grade, u give it to urself, unless ur professor is an absolute asshat, then toughshit.

now, i don't mean to be cocky, but there were some absolute bullshit classes i had to take, being it was a prerequisite or a college requirement. This is what i did, and it might work for other people, who are of my genius and fanciness calibur. The first couple of weeks of class, i asked a lot of questions, i answered a lot of questions, showed extreme intrest in the class, pretty much proved to the professor that i knew my shit. Once i established that with the teacher, I would come up with some bullshit excuse about how i got a job somewhere and if it was ok if i could hand in homework/assignments/projects and just show up for tests. 90 percent of the time they'd be cool with it. I'd get to sleep in, and copy homework from someone else or just breeze through it. Rinse, lather, Repeat for the other classes. I just wouldn't recommend it for classes u know ur gonna be havin' trouble in.

Free periods rule. If can't use this time wisely, i suggest gettin' urself a laptop and surfing the net in between classes. Most campuses have Access points all over the school. enjoy the free bandwidth. And post as much as u can on Wackbag of course.

Digital Cameras. u gotta capture some priceless once in a lifetime moments, make sure u have nice digital cameras and such. And Please post pictures on here, of some nice hot broads, and filthy college party chicks.

And finally, don't chase skirts all day long, u'll just get distracted and end up missin' out on something important. if ya dig a chick, just play it cool, keep ur distance, and hope u get a casual thing going, otherwise any chick u chase, if she gives it up, is a big risk. Chances are she has a bf already, she has an STD or VD, or will turn into a sociopath in no time, and i've seen many fall as a result of this, out of college and just fucked. Then again she could be a nice clean good hot piece of ass, a good egg, if u will. U gotta play ur cards right, but it's all up in the air, ya know. If ur gonna chase tail, just use ur head man, make sure she's clean, make sure she's stable, and make sure she's disposable at a moments notice without any real damage.

oh yeah...i dont know if this was mentioned...go see your professors in the first week and see them weekly or every other week..even if u dont need to see them

they will get to know your face and will be able to put a face to your name when they grade your test..if ur a good bullshitter/socializer talk to them...ask them questions and they will ask you questions in return

i have found this sooo helpful..it has gotten me out of many jams when i miss class for a week..month..etc....they'll like you and that is HUGE

Go to fucking class! Take it from me, I'm 23 years old, a college dropout, and working construction. I'm going back once I get my act straight. There's going to be people in the dorms that just party and don't go to class. Hang out with them ONLY on the weekends. Have your fun, but don't go overboard like me.

GLENN_THE_TOOL
09-02-2005, 07:34 PM
yeah, one professor i had was cool, i was royally fucking up in the class, failing quizzes, not reading, etc. but unlike most professors who just teach the class and not get involved with the students, he came to me and offered me a chance to make up the quizzes i screwed up on. so i started reading the book, writing every single paper whether i was required to or not, and acing the quizzes. and for my good work, he gave me credit for the papers i didn't have to write but wrote anyway.

a lot of it has to do with your professors. some actually get involved in the class, others just phone it in and go by the book. AVOID THE "BY THE BOOK" PROFESSORS AT ALL COST. they don't care if you pass or fail, so they won't give you a second chance if you screw up.

and do not hang out in the student commons to study. with all the hot college tail that walks around, it's too easy to get distracted. go to the library.

tar_baby
09-02-2005, 07:39 PM
STUDY ALONE!!!

and as the tool said....make a relationship with your profs...i think this is the biggest thing....you can miss half the semester but if you know ur prof he'll help you out
some kids who miss dont have a face to their name...the prof just thinks.."slacker"..but if you go to meet him he'll feel sorry for you and help you out

ALSO...and some might frown on this...but if you go to the prof and say you are having family problems..divorce..etc....you will get a MAJOR pass....i cant even count the number of times my parents have divorced...and they are soooo happily married

CrisK
09-02-2005, 08:13 PM
I agree, befriending your professors is a good thing, but don't take advantage of that. Don't lie about your personal life so you can sleep in or skip a test. They are there to do their jobs and actually ensure that you learn something for the thousands of dollars you spend, NOT to give you an extra day to complete a paper because you are hungover.

But, if you are having legitimate problems with the class, then they will be more than happy to see you after class and help you. Most professors actually want their students to learn and eventually succeed in life.

Absolutely. If you're looking to get a minor or second major in something, make it something useful AND different enough from your major. Who wants a math major with a minor in statistics. You;d be a lot better off with a bio major and management minor (or the like).

buy used books if you can
make sure you actually understand what they're trying to teach you.. then you can BS your way through class if you're asked a question
figure out exactly how many classes you can miss and what classes you can't miss
look on the book's website for the sample tests/quizes because a lot of my teachers used the exact questions for their tests
