There is definitely a difference between someone who is funny when they are doing a scripted comedy show, than being funny and able to riff with others in a spontaneous way in a studio.

Good comedians can do both.

Being able to come in and sit down with the Bbbboys and come up with funny things to say without having a team of writers seems like the definition of a good comic.

Comedians like Jim Norton, Lewis Black, and to a lesser extent Vos :) Are funny comedians who have great acts and can also come up with stuff on the fly. Joe Rogan fits in nicely in this category.

Comedians like Jerry Seinfeld, Ray Romano and Kevin James can come up with funny stuff given enough time and or enough writers but seem to fall flat when they are expected to be funny on the spot. Carlos Mencia seems to fit in this category.

Bottom line is hearing Joe Rogan go off about a new kind of ape, or Lil' Jimmy talking about what a meaty breasted nothing he is is a lot funnier than repeating word for word a joke that we heard on a previous weeks' "Mind of Mencia".

Rogan had me rolling today. When Mencia came into the studio a while back, I couldn't even get through the entire thing because he is just so awful. It's one of the few times I've shut off a live show, aside from having to do something like go to work or school.

So, I take back some of what I said about him not being funny. I still retain the fact that pot heads have a TON of theories. Then again...so do most "clean" people. So, it doesn't matter...today...I found JOE ROGAN to be FUNNY, after listenin' while NOT at work.

I wouldn't mind if Ned did some clever, race inspired humor, but the fact that his act primarily consists of stale, easily contrived jokes about an ethnicity he is not even a member of, is enough for me to vote for anyone who writes and performs original material. I am sorry that you feel that way but since you deem yourself a comedy intellectual here you go. Before you say that George and I have a problem know this, I don't have any problems with George. I don't make negative comments about George as a matter of fact, I tell people at times during my shows to watch his show. As far as my HBO special you would have had to have seen me perform since 1988 to know when he or I wrote anything first, and just so you know, that was very remedial rudimentary material. Taco Bell jokes? That is Latino comedy 101. I'm sorry to tell you but all "Hispanic" comedians start off with those jokes, "all" of us. From Freddy Prinze, who did jokes about roaches in his home to Paul who pulled out a knife and called it the Mexican Express card, to me and Taco Bell jokes, to every young Latino comedian who does jokes about the difference between "Latinos and White people"? Oh and by the way read more of the site, everyone knows my name is Ned, I have even said it on national television.

The Bill Hicks reference, you gotta be kidding me. If you believe that "rednecks fucking family members" is an observation made only by a few people, you never saw the movie Deliverance. The Reginald Denny bit, I wrote it the day of the riots at the comedy store while the fires were still burning and thankfully I have it on tape.
Regarding the tornado jokes I stole from Joe Rogan. Joe Rogan came to Hollywood about 9 years ago after I had worked on that joke for years and I had already put it on my HBO special. If you believe that to be a mistake, call the Comedy Store in Hollywood ask when I started to perform there and check the date for a show the Joe did on Fox, where he played a baseball player. Backtrack from that date about 6 months and that is when he came to where I already was. Also note this, before that time Joe did not perform on national TV so I could not have seen him do the bit if I wanted.
The HBO specials you talk about how my dad is Honduran and my mom is Mexican and I was born in Honduras. I actually tell a joke about how no matter what I say in LA I'm Mexican, in Miami, I'm Cuban and in New York and the audience yells out Puerto Rican, check this. For the record by the way I have never called myself nor do I even use the word "Chicano". I don't know who your favorite comedian is but instead of trying to bring me down, maybe you should use this space to venerate your choice and tell people how great that person is instead of what you have just done. I would have liked a neither choice. But it's Rogan just because he's the lesser of two annoyances. Mencia, besides being a beaner, is a yeller. Even if you dont like Mencia, you have to admit he has a lot of engergy and charisma and is overall, to the average person willing to be entertained, a likeable guy. The lack of successful latino comics, compared to the actual size of the latino population in this country (quite large, esp in CA), makes it a little easier for him to succeed within his demographic. Rogan doesnt play off of a demo, he doesn't seem to care about being likeable, but as far as raw material and talent goes, he's definately got it.

Loved Rogan on newsradio and heard some good stuff from the XM comedy XL channel but he was the biggest hack ever of all time on the man's show and on fear factor there has never been anything remotely funny coming from him. When he was on the show all I remember was he was enraged and never funny.

Mencia brings me a few chuckles now and again but it is all the same tired old stuff. I have found though that almost every comedian is doing the same old tired stuff. It will be great to see any new comedian come out and hopefully see and hear something new for once.

I have one more thing to add. I remember many years ago when I was a kid back in the late 60's and early 70's that a Comedian that my father knew saying all these same arguments. Telling us that all Comedians stole jokes from each other and he used the word Hack a lot.
