Today while watching the USC game I saw a Diet Cherry Coke commercial which used the same tune as Jim Nortons "Phenominal" song. Did this song originated elsewhere? or is it possible the Diet Coke marketing team is listening to O&A and using there catchy tunes. (many created by listeners).
Thanks for the info. if ya know....

Years ago when radio disney started, me and my sister were listening to it to see what it was like. That song came on and we were just like "What the f is this?" One of the funniest songs ever...I was laughing so hard when i heard the "phenomenal" mix.

I just looked it up: Originally from 1976 (episode 17 of the 1st season of the Muppet Show), and sung by Mahna Mahna and the two Snowths, the Mahna Mahna song was reborn as the Phenomena song in episode 7 of Muppets Tonight (broadcast 20/9/96 in the UK, 23/6/96 in the US). The Phenomena song was performed by Dr. (Sandra) Bullock the Animal Psychiatrist, who was visited by Kermit. Kermit's problem was that he saw strange creatures whenever he said the word "phenomena"...http://www.poppyfields.net/poppy/mahna.html
Ho boy, it's a ringtone http://www.ringtonesgalore.co.uk/enhanced/tv-themes/mahna-mahna-muppets/theme/

Same here. And I remember refusing to watch Wheel of Fortune for years because it took the Muppets time slot when it ended.

I think the original may even be older than '76. I seem to remember it as little kid in the '60s. Maybe the muppets on Ed Sullivan?

i remember it on the benny hill show, but i'm 20, so it had to be after '85. But that's where i remember it from.

I was thinking that too. I remember a slightly different version friom when I was a kid. Here's someone that has documented it as being on Sesame Street in 1969 including an earlier version of the muppet.

http://www.toughpigs.com/anthhipster07.htm

And here's the kicker - the song was originally written by Piero Umiliani in 1968 as part of the soundtrack for a Swedish X-rated documentary called "Sweden; Heaven or Hell" and Jim Henson knew where the song came from when he used it on Sesame Street in '69.

i recall hearing the "Mahna Mahna" song the for first time when i was a little kid. they did some kind of Muppets anniversary special in the 80's, featuring highlights from the Muppet Show, Sesame Street, and the Muppets' early days on shows like Ed Sullivan and other shows. i'm pretty sure i still have the tape of it somewhere, my mother used to record a lot of the TV specials and such for us, and i like to break them out for a good nostalgia trip every now and then.

i'm pretty certain the Dr. Pepper commercial came before "Phenominal", but i could be wrong. the first time i saw the commercial was back in April and i was drunk at the time, and it made me giggle uncontrollably as i attempted to stay upright in my chair.

ok guys, my Mom is a DJ on 107.1 The Breeze in Jersey ( www.breezeradio.com ). she said she'll play "Mahna Mahna" as her "one hit wonder" track of the night if I can get her a clean audio file. she'll also say on air, something to the effect of, "this one hit wonder is going out to all the opie and anthony and wackbag fans". i need someone to send me a clean file that I can burn to CD. the video file has canned laughter which is less gooder. i don't know how the guy who did the flash animation i linked in a previous post got the clean file with no laughter. PM me if you can help.

Thanks a mill dude.... the reason it took me this long to reply is because Sunday night my laptop hard drive took a shit. I pulled my tower PC out of storage today, and it was up and running for 5 minutes before the power supply took a shit as well. 2 computers fucked. I had to snag an old 3rd string celeron 700 i threw together last year for my lil bro. I'll email the file to my Mom and she'll play it on the air this Saturday. I'll have her dedicate it to Lil Jimmy and say it's phemomenal or something like that... and I'll have her get some sort of ONA mention in there. I hope someone can record it.... 107.1 in NJ, 99.7 in south jersey... the 107.1 comes in in brooklyn and staten as well. They stream on breezeradio.com, so if someone records it online that would work too. PM me if you can help out.

Being the author of the Jimmy "Phenomenal" song, I would like to campaign here to maybe get a nomination in Best Song Parody for it in the favorite O&A bit end of year awards/countdown thing they are doing for 2005. I mean if seeing a commercial featuring the real song can give someone a chuckle 3 months after it's last been played, that should account for something, no?
Thanks.

yep, heard it all my life...thanks, i guess.

i'll try to see what time she's gonna play it so you don't have to suffer through 60's and 70's (unless that's ur thing) just to record a goofy thing like this.

I have "Total Recorder" - I can set my 'puter' like a VCR and assuming the feed doesn't time out I can just turn it on and walk away and then go back and find the spot she plays it later on. I've used it a few times to record O&A and then burned the files to CD to listen to when then aren't on.

I don't mind 60's and 70's at all being 40 myself - but I doubt I will be near my computer at the time she is on.

Phenominal should be added onto all the time and should be played whenever Ozzie visits the studio. That would be... Phenominal.

Sure as hell would be better than that Alice's restaurant song.

Bumping this thread because tonight is my Mom's last Saturday night show before switching to Fridays. She's going to play the mahna-mahna (aka phenominal) song tonight and dedicate it to the ONA pests and a happy birthday to 'lil Jimmy Nordin. If anyone can record this from the online feed @ www.breezeradio.com , I would greatly appreciate it! PM me if you can help. Thanks.

Glad to see I'm not the only person 30 and older that still loves the Muppets from childhood. Who didn't grow up on the creations of the great Jim Henson? Kids still watch reincarnations of the same shows now!

Anyways, I have to say this......

I don't think the song was 'original' to the muppets - I am pretty sure it was on Sesame Street before the Muppet Show.

Seeing as how Sesame Street was created by Jim Henson as was The Muppet Show, all containing the same characters (Anyone remember Kermit the Frog reporting for Sesame Street Newwwwwwwwws?) the Sesame Street cast ARE Muppets. They're all one big happy Jim Henson family.

For that matter, so are the Fraggles from Fraggle Rock, Yoda, and the creatures from Dark Crystal.

Just an FYI.
