I usually take vacations in the caribbean, but since I'm on the west coast I thought I'd take advantage of my proximity to Hawaii. I've been once, and stayed on Kauai, but didn't have too good of a time, so I'm wondering if anyone's been and had a good experience.

It'll be me and my girlfriend, going for about a week in february/march. Cost is a concern, and we're pretty much just looking for a nice beach to chill out on and maybe some kind of night life, but that's not too important.

Thanks for anyone who can suggest anything.

MAUI....you'll never want to leave. If you go buy a book called "Maui Revealed" you wont regret it.

Yes, buy that book. It is amazing. My wife and I went to Maui for our honeymoon in 2002 and we used that book like a bible the whole trip. It tells you everything - where to eat, where to stay, what to do, etc. We stayed at a place called the Noelani Condo Resort and absolutely loved it. You have your own little condo, complete with a kitchen and tv, stereo, porch overlooking the ocean, etc. There's no swimming beach right out front, but you are literally about 20 feet from the water, and the sunsets are OUTRAGEOUS! There's 2 pools, a hot tub, and 2 bbq grills. Best part - it's "off the beaten path" so you are not around all the high-rise hotels and all that shit. It's a great place. Also, you are in an area where the tradewinds blow pretty much constantly, so you get a really nice cooling effect.
We went back there in 2004, and we are actually planning on going back there next summer. Maui is by far the best island. We have been to Kauai (kinda boring), Molokai (nothing to do), Oahu (WAY too crowded, plus too many Asians), and the Big Island (huge, but pretty damn fun). Maui has the beauty, the beaches, the weather, the SUPER hot chicks... it's perfect.
Check it out here - http://www.noelani-condo-resort.com/

If you want some pics that we personally took, PM me.

Also...DONT do the stupid Luoa (spelling?) waste of time and money. If you rent a vehicle make sure its 4wd so you arent limited as to where you can go...we got a jeep and beat the shit out of it...lots of fun.

If you're into that sort of thing the waves on Waimea beach on the north shore of Oahu are amazing. I'm not sure if the other islands have comparable beaches for surfing, but I was stuck on the shit island the whole time I was there. (stupid Navy)

Maui is the place (can not believe cricket is actually right for once). Do the road to Hana. If you take your time, you will see some amazing things. It will take you about a day if you do it right. When renting a car, make sure you get a convertible. Also do the sunrise at Halilakila (spelling?). Get there real early (you should probably leave your hotel at 3a.m.), you will not be disapointed. You will see more stars then you thought existed, and see one of the most amazing sunrises in the world. I stayed at the Westin on Kaanapali beach, great hotel, a bit pricey though. I can asure you Maui will blow away any caribean island you have been to. I can not wait to go back.

Do The Big Island and Maui if you can and have the time. They are right next to each other, so hopping on a puddle jumper is cheap and it's only like a 15 minute flight (in the Air). I went on my honeymoon 2 years ago and I still think the Big Island was the best of all the 3 I visited, when it came to a relaxing atmosphere. Maui is great for going out and partying, Waterfalls, and the Road to Hana.

The Big Island is just something to behold and very relaxing. You get the lush tropics but you also get the Volcanic scenery and then there is a part where it' s almost like the Midwest but hilly and Lush. Kinda Hard to explain, but you really get almost every type of scenery on the Big Island. There are a lot less people on the Big Island as well which is cool.

Edit: NM I saw Cost is an important factor in your post. Go to Maui then . Party your ass off and have sex in a Waterfall! ?Have fun!

I have been to Maui 3 times, I like Kihei it's more laid back than Kaanapali. If you were to go to Hana go all the way around (even if the rental company tells you not to), there is a lot of stuff to see. The trip up to Haleakala was okay, bring something warm to wear and don't go to Hana in the same day it will wipe you out. If you go try to befriend a local, they know all the good beaches including the nude ones.
