LOS ANGELES - In 2005, some people wanted the word “brainstorming” replaced by “thought shower” so as not to offend people with brain disorders, and they also wanted ”deferred success” to replace “failure” so as not to embarrass those who don’t succeed.

Both phrases appear on a tongue-in-cheek list released Thursday of the year’s most politically correct words and phrases issued by Global Language Monitor, a nonprofit group that monitors language use.

The phrase that topped this year’s list was “misguided criminals,” one of several terms the British Broadcasting Corp. used so as not to use the word “terrorist” in describing those who carried out train and bus bombings in London that killed 52 people in July, according to Paul J. Payack, the head of Global Language Monitor.

He added, “The BBC attempts to strip away all emotion by using what it considers ‘neutral’ descriptions when describing those who carried out the bombings in the London Tubes.”

Second on the list was “Intrinsic Aptitude,” a phrase used by Harvard University President Lawrence Summers to explain why women might be underrepresented in engineering and science. The phrase met with “deferred success” and Summers had to fight to keep to his job.

“Thought shower” was third and a French word for riff-raff or scum, “la racaille,” was fourth thanks to being used by French Interior Minister Nicholas Sarkozy to describe rioters of Muslim and North African descent in suburbs outside of Paris.

“Out of the mainstream,” which Payack said was used to describe the ideology of any political opponent, was fifth and in sixth place was “deferred success” the euphemism for “fail” that Britain’s Professional Association of Teachers considered using to bolster students’ “self-esteem.” The move also met with “deferred success.”

Seventh on the list was “womyn” for women in order to distance the word from men and eighth was using C.E. (Common Era) for A.D (Latin for “Year of Our Lord”) so as to be more neutral in dates.

Ninth on the top 10 list was words and phrases that either de-Christianize the Christian holidays or neuter their genders. For example “God Rest Ye Merry Persons” replaces “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” and “Seasons Greetings” replaces “Merry Christmas.”

In 10th place was a move aimed at the heart of Australian culture when security staff were banned from using the word “mate” to address members of parliament. The MPs rebelled and said not being called “mate” was unpatriotic.

It's funny that they use "Deferred Success" to describe people who wouldn't understand what it means.

That's because the real goal of the use of such a phrase is not so much to make those who fail feel better, but to make the condescending, paternalistic people who created that phrase feel better. It makes them feel good because they can pat themselves on the back for at least making the attempt to protect someone else's feelings....so the fact that people who fail don't understand that phrase is basically irrelevent.

Its the same people that don't want winners and losers in childrens sports. They say children shouldnt have to worry about winners and losers. That will work till one of those little shits grows up gets rejected and ends up on a roof top with a sniper rifle. Its just parents that were picked on when they were kids not wanting there kids picked on

This PC bullshit is starting to affect my ability to communicate effectively at my job and I won’t stand for it. Anytime someone uses a term like, “Developmentally Delayed,” I look them dead in the eye and say, “When is the patient expected to catch up developmentally.” After a few seconds of uncomfortably shifting from foot to foot they are forced to reply, “They won’t,” or “Never.” At which point I say, “So they are not delayed developmentally, they are retarded developmentally, so they are developmentally retarded. I suggest you put a little more thought into your diagnosis in the future.” What the fuck!?! How are doctors supposed to treat people when you can’t even say what is wrong with them? This shit is so out of hand it is going to get people hurt or killed, (not that it isn’t already).

libertarianism is the answer. alot of these people watse time on issues liket his just to get their names in the paper. PC Liberalism is all about image, not substance.

some people wanted the word “brainstorming” replaced by “thought shower” sounds like a bad joke a preist would give at a sermon. It just amazes me that they are blatanly pulling this out of their asses. I have never considered 'brainstroming' to be derogative of mental problmes, but now that i think about it, i probably will just to spite.

Yeah my favorite politically correct terms are those that are so innacurate.

I love the phrase "African Americans". Wtf? I'm not called a European American, I'm just fucking called an American! Fuck Africa, you're here not there.

Unless you were born in Africa, or have dual citizenship, I dont want to hear about it.

And what about blacks who arent from Africa? I've heard plenty of them reffered to as African American. That seems insulting, so why is that politically correct?

These fuckers should be more concerned with changing the conotations of words like retarded than with switching to less accurate terminology (yeah, I know, they will never make retarded not sound so bad, but their time is better spent trying that than fucking anything else up).

I always like to point out that they're not called African-British in England or African-French in France, so why are they called African-American here?

I have to disagree - I have no problem with blacks labeling themselves as something distinct from other Americans in this country (they are, after all, a distinct group of people). But the term "African American" is wordy and unnecessary. There shouldn't be anything wrong with the word "black" or "Black American." Its much more to the point. Africa is a continent. When we point to a black person and call him an "African American," we are not thinking about the continent of his ancestors - we are thinking about his race.

Pretty soon our political correctness is gonna drive us to the point where we are gonna have to call a **** victim "an unwilling sperm recipient."

Tongue in cheek means this is joking, right?

The "tongue in cheek part" was referring to the people who were compiling the list of politically correct phrases that other people or groups actually used. So, while the list is tongue in cheek, the actual use of these moronically politically correct phrases was completely serious.

Found this........

PC Prizes

The Global Language Monitor has released its list of the top ten most outrageous examples of political correctness for 2005. Coming in at No. 9: an Anglican Church in Wales, which changed the lyrics of the 500-year-old Christmas carol, "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" to "God Rest Ye Merry Persons." At No. 6 is the UK teachers' union, which considered scrapping the word "fail" in favor of "deferred success" to bolster students' self esteem.

And at the top of the list is the BBC, which refused to use the word "terrorist" to describe the suicide bombers who attacked London in July, instead calling them "misguided criminals."

Fucking Wakco's !!! This is just too much. These are the same people that had thier books kicked out of thier hands in school ......
