TRENTON-- A city health center that treats HIV is pulling out all stops to lure people in for a test.
"The test is free and confidential,’’ said Henry J. Austin Health Center HIV Coordinator, Mary Lou Freund.
"And anyone who comes in to get tested this week will receive a $20 ShopRite gift card.’’
The giveaway accentuates Freund’s concerns for an increasing city HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) problem that is bringing destruction to numerous Trenton neighborhoods.
"It’s scary but people get tired of hearing about AIDS. They figure that it could never happen to them. It’s like seatbelts,’’ said Freund.
"Taking the risk sexually is no different. If the person looks good then they could not possibly be infected. We’ve been preaching this message of getting tested for 20 years.’’
Currently, 975 city adults and adolescents are infected by HIV. Most live in minority communities where the virus receives minimal concern, one million in the U.S.
Worldwide approximately 65 million people are infected with the AIDS virus.
Freund and area health leaders confront the AIDS issue daily although Thursday highlights their fight during World Aids Day.
Henry J. Austin Health Center in conjunction with Mt. Zion Baptist Church host a 6 p.m. service of remembrance at the Perry Street church.
Rider University hosts a candlelight ceremony at 7:30 p.m. in the Cavalla Room of the Bart Luedeke Center.
Highlights for the evening will include a performance by the Rider dance team, the display of Rider’s Aids quilt, give-aways and a presentation by a speaker from the AIDS Commissioner’s office.
