I wasn't sure where this goes...

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Limbo -- the place where the Catholic Church teaches that babies go if they die before being baptized -- may have its days numbered.

According to Italian media reports on Tuesday, an international theological commission will advise Pope Benedict to eliminate the teaching about limbo from the Catholic catechism.

The Catholic Church teaches that babies who die before they can be baptized go to limbo, whose name comes from the Latin for "border" or "edge," because they deserve neither heaven nor hell.

Last October, seven months before he died, Pope John Paul asked the commission to come up with "a more coherent and enlightened way" of describing the fate of such innocents.

It was then headed by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who was elected Pope in April. It is now headed by his successor at the Vatican's doctrinal department, Archbishop William Levada, an American from San Francisco.

The commission, which has been meeting behind closed doors, may make its recommendation soon.

In his Divine Comedy, Dante passes limbo on his way into hell and writes: "Great grief seized on my own heart when this I heard, because some people of much worthiness I knew, who in limbo were suspended."

Do people actually still go to Church? What more do you need to see and hear to know that all religions are man made and you've wasted your lives with your faith? Religion has started more wars and created more bad vibes between people on our planet than any other force.

Religion is evil, plain and simple.

What are they gonna say in church if this is changed?

"Um you know that stuff I've been saying about the babies in limbo? Well it was bullshit I guess because the guy up at head office says so. So now the rules are unbaptized babies burn in hell with the faggots. Please open your bible version 45.09.334 to page 54 and repeat after me. I am a mindless follower and will believe whatever I am told without question. God is all powerful and does crazy shit like make things that make no sense then punish you when you believe in the things he made to trick you into not believeing him. AMEN"

Religion is as useful as the person who believes.

I can't argue that religion has been the cause of many wars, strife, etc; but it's not for nothing that AA (and other Anonymous groups) encourage belief in a higher power.

People who follow Christianity correctly are usually good people. It's the fanatics, the people who pervert the religion to serve their own ends, who are the problem.

Um I guess you may be confused... It is the fanatics who are following the religion correctly. The "good" people are only following the religious shit that they want to....

If I say "kill your mom. fuck a sheep, eat a baby, take a nap then kill yourself" and you only take the nap are you really following my instructions?

Religion scares the shit out of me. I know it alledgedly helps people, but it all of the hipocrosy that comes from it makes it all that much more confusing to me. Like KillGreys said what are they suppose to do when the teach one thing then take it back. I have been preeched to and told my questions were dumb, but I have problems with the mish mash that everyone gets from the bible.

fanatics tend to follow what their religion say PERIOD. while most people just follow some of it... Yeah i believe jesus is god but not the whole 7 in seven days the earth was created thing... Or I believe the part where jesus said I am the son of god but not the part where he said that all the laws of the old testemenet were to be followed also...

It is the fanatics that follow the word of the koran and the bible.. it is the "good" people who try and follow or the "good" and "noble" parts or what they think are good and noble. How many of you christians wear something to cover your head everywhere but in church? or make your women cover their head at all times.. Those are rules from the old testement that Jesus your savior and the son of GOD says you should follow... Don't get me wrong I don't think the fanatics are right I actually think all you religious people are either crazy or ignorant. BUT the fanatics are actually believing what they say they believe and not just tinny bits and piece of what they want to... how can you believe that say the bible is true when it comes to say creationism but isn't true when it says In John 14:13-14 Jesus stated: "And whatsoever ye ask in my name I do, that the Father may be glorified in the son. If ye ask any thing in my name, I will do it." In reality, millions of people have made millions of requests in Jesus’ name and failed to receive satisfaction. This promise or prophecy has failed completely.

See religions can bend and shift just so those running it can be happy. In my religion (I happen to be Eastern Orthodox, which is a Christian religion) they believe unbaptized babies will go to hell, there never has been a limbo, just heaven or hell, If the baby happens to be dying they better get a priest in there quick to bless it. But my religion has its own F ups, which i could care less about cuz honestly i dont give too much to fairy tales that people created just so they can create a little bit of revenue. I havent been to church since i was 16 (i dont count funerals or weddings, and when I am at those I do not do my cross) So F the church and their wacky ways.

Yep that sure sounds like "eliminate all references to it".

I agree with you when it comes to Islam but NOT Christianity. A true Christian tries to emulate the teachings of Jesus...

Turn the other cheek

Love your neighbor as you love yourself.

Do not hold hate in your heart.

Be tolerant of others.

These so-called fanatics you speak of hardly cling to the teachings of Jesus when it comes to the "Tolerance" and "Love" aspect of it. The problem with your thinking, sir, it that you are willing to give so-called pure Christians the benefit of the doubt when they go around saying they are "true Christians."

Instead of pointing at a facist Christian and saying, "ah-ha, so this is what Christianity teaches people to be!", you should be pointing at him and saying, "you are doing nothing but paying lip service you your religion, you are not following the teachings of Jesus, and are using the facade of religion as a mask of righteousness to hide your evil intents."

I am not a Christian and I do not believe Jesus was divine, but he did have a pretty good philosophy towards life that very, very few of his followers have adhered to throughout history. As Nietzche said, "the only real Christian died on the cross."

A TRUE Christian fanatic would be fanatical about peace, love, and tolerance....not some self-righteous psycho who uses violence and harrassment to force people to change their beliefs. That is NOT Christianity. The people you think are Christian fanatics are not really Christian at all, they just LABEL themselves as real Christians...and people like you got duped into believing them and smearing the true teachings of Jesus and Christianity.

Wasnt there a rim like on a plate where the unbaptised and philosophers existed before the gate to hell with Cerberus? That is where the narrator finds Plato, his guide

You are right it is virgil
the 1st ring is limbo the 2nd is where virgil should have been placed but he was sent as an emissary, within a fortress with green lawns and lush areas but a feeling of sadness and remorse all about. It this is where the great thinkers are ans unbaptised babies are.

Yea but it was only a very slight, almost imperceptible feeling of sadness in the air.

Great book, it was.
