WASHINGTON -- Video games glamorizing guns and violence have long drawn the ire of media watchdog groups. This holiday season, they say they have found a bloody new wrinkle to hate: cannibalism.
Games featuring graphic scenes of cannibalism, "F.E.A.R." and "Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse," were among the 12 "games to avoid" listed Tuesday by the National Institute on Media and the Family.
"It's something we've never seen before," said institute president David Walsh, warning that today's games are "more extreme" and more easily available to underage kids than ever before.
In "Stubbs the Zombie," the lead character eats the brains of humans as blood splatters across the screen.
"It's just the worst kind of message to kids," said Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., who joined institute officials at a press conference announcing the group's 10th annual video game report card. "They can be dangerous to your children's health."
Hal Halpin, head of Interactive Entertainment Merchants Association, an industry trade group, defended such games, saying they are rated M, not intended for children under 17.
"It's not appropriate for kids and it is clearly labeled that way," said Halpin. "There are R-rated movies and DVDs."
The article doesn't end there, but the remainder is the typical "excessive violence and sex" argument. Incredible, isn't it?

I say we all contact Lieberman (http://lieberman.senate.gov/contact/index.cfm?regarding=issue) and let him know there are bigger things he should be worrying about.

i may be the only one, but "Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel without a Pulse" looks to be a fake cartoon-esque game, unlike the zombies in, say, the resident evil series. here's some pictures and a review. (http://xbox.ign.com/objects/711/711834.html)

I really want to like Lieberman, because he supported the Iraq invasion and hasn't backpedaled like the rest of the bandwagon-jumpers have, but he's been an ass about the video game thing for years. I remember an article a while back where he wanted to put the equivalent of the "Parental Advisory" on all junk foods. There's other shit going on in the country and world - stop worrying so much about the snot-nosed kids who are going to turn out worthless anyway.

Fuck, I'd rather more people (politicians) bring attention to the fattening of our culture than the horrors videogames bring.

Not for nothing, but if you were told infomation as serious as this and get told later that the info was from totally unreliable sources and some of it complete bullshit wouldn't you rethink that you voted for? I believed the president when he presented his case against iraq, i was with him all the way until the stories came out about the sources and ways we got our info. I would really like to know why we are there but we will probably never know, if it were for the reason of freeing an oppressed people, there are worse dictators out there that treat their people much worse than Saddam and I sure as hell wouldnt send our troops solely for that purpose.

It's just a place for parents to point fingers at when thier kids are out of control. Watch your fucking kids for god damn sakes.

Parents complain about tv cuz its babysitting thier kids and the same with games. If the parents would just pay attention to thier kids this wouldnt be an issue. With vulture lawyers out there blaming evreyone for everything they need a scapegoat for parents that shouldnt be breeding. After all it isnt like the kids are the parents responsiblility, its the government and the schools. The news is more violent than video games and its real.

Oh, and Liberman is a douche, fuck anyone who says there should be more censoring in games, there are ratings and anyone under 17 cant buy M games, that should be it. Leave it to the parents if they think their kids can handle those games.

If underage kids are caught drinking, they dont go after the fucking brewery, they go after the store that sold the booze to the minors. Same thing should apply here. If a game is sold to a kid under the required age then the store should be at fault, not the gaming company. If parents buy a game and dont properly research then too fucking bad.

you're not gonna go on 60 Minutes a few years from now and start crying and apologizing if Lieberman really gets cancer, are you? :icon_wink
yeah, this whole arguement is so fucking stupid. i'm all for stores preventing minors from buying games for adults, and parents should be more mindful of what their children are watching and playing. i'm 21 and i'm an adult and i can buy, watch, and play whatever i want to. DON'T TAKE AWAY THE THINGS I ENJOY BECAUSE YOU CAN'T TAKE CARE OF YOUR KIDS!

selling alcohol to minors can have drastic, immediate consequences. a store selling a violent video game wont. my evidence? me and the millions of kids who aren't mentally unstable.
eb games isnt in the business of parenting, it's in the business of selling video games. the buck stops at the parents
They say it as if cannibalism in video games is somthing new.
There have been plenty of instances of cannibals in games befor. I remember playing this one game called Messiah where an entire group of sewer dwelling humans frequently fed on bodies of fallen police and civilians, and thats completely ignoring the obvious zombie angle (and zombies are usually just animated human bodies, so whats the differince anyways?)
I agree that it falls to the parents, and it should go no further... However if they do go after anyone, it should be the stores that sell the games first.
The rating system works. hidden (and thus it should be exempt) mini game included, GTA:SA deserved an M rating.
"OMG, young children could see polygonical sex acts!" Don't buy your kid the fucking game! What, are you worried that a 17 year old will see it? If not, shut the fuck up.
Be a parent, or let your child turn into the sadistic perverted piece of shit that you are bound to create through your inability to raise them properly. If you be a parent, you can easily keep explicit content away from your child, or, you can expose them to such content, let them have a good fuckin time, and teach them the difference between what they are doing in the game, and how they should behave in real life as human beings.
Its things like this that make me HAAAAATE the left... and the right. Fuck em, I don't vote and I'm happy not to

It's hard to tell what's worse...the left has the P.C. thugs, but the right has the "moral majority" who believe censorship is a religious right.
I tend to hdislike the latter more.

I'd have to agree, except that there are all the fucking asswipe liberals like Hilary, trying to be "family oriented" by being overly vocal about opposition to violent video games.
Of course, right here in the golden state, we have our wonderful governator (Dillon!) who is making his own stand against violent video games. Why not make all of your action movies be changed to X rated arnold? R would be fine, except they still show the violence on TV. Make it X rated, and they wont broadcast it on most cable channels no matter how much editing was done.
If you arent going to let the video game rating system do its job, then at least be consistant and go after movies too. See how much support you get trying to fuck with peoples movies, dumbass

these laws are for thick headed people like my sister in law who lets her 9 year old daughter play GTA. stop making these laws and start being parents a little parental supervision goes a long way.

People need something to blame.
Of course, I'm one of the few left who like to blame people for their actions, instead of inanimate objects.
