My brother got me a bottle of Glenfiddich single malt. I've only drank JW Black scotch before so how much of a difference is this gonna be? I'm probably gonna drink this on New Years eve so I just want some feedback about this paticular scotch.

Ok, I moved this where it needs to be...
I found this website (http://www.charm.net/~kmarsh/scotch.html) which mentioned that particular brand.
Glenfiddich is a Single Highland Malt most remarkable for its blandness and lack of character. Some like it that way. Try Glenlivet if you want to try a good Single Highland Malt that is readily available, and not too expensive. Glenfiddich is the largest selling Single Malt in the world, though. To be fair, it is a pure, light Highland without coarse qualities.
It's probably really nice and smooth. It must be popular for a reason. Enjoy!

its not a bad scotch... nothing terribly special... but a nice drinking scotch...
it will be a bit shrper than JW because it is a single malt and not blended... try not to cut it with ice and just sip it at room temp
For any scotch drinker out there you have to try "Lagavulin" This scotch has a smoked flavor like no other scotch. A bottle of this is not cheap but it's worth it if you want a real character filled taste in a scotch. It's good!
(16) Rating: 9. The lowest altitude of the Islay Malts, this is the most character-filled Scotch I've ever had. Not for the tame. Peaty, smoky, mediciney. I recently retasted Lagavulin and don't find it as medicinal as the first bottle (miniature actually). It may have been an inconsistancy in bottling, as my previous impressions didn't match up with many other's opinions. Only available as a 16 year old, it is expensive, but the price is in line with other 15 or 16 year olds. A miniature bottle cost me $6.99! Licensed in 1816, it has a true pedigree

a friend of mine got me ths a while back:
The Edradour
(10) Rating: 7.5 Another Sherry-cask Scotch, pretty good for a 10 year old. A Highland Single Malt. A baby-boom single malt from a old site.
it is from the smallest distillary in scottland... had a very nice body and the flavor was well rounded...

How do you people get past the awful battery acid taste of Scotch?
I never tasted battery acid but scotch is a acquired taste. It's not for everyone.

I would like to know what good scotch tastes like, I hope the Glenfiddich is better than the shitty JW Black I got last year, Yeeech.
Black label is nowhere near the taste of Glenfiddich.

I'll never understand how people can sip ANY alchohol. I drink for one reason:
TO GET DRUNK.
I don't really care about the flavor of my alchohol so I drink whiskey. JD and similar ones are fine.

With time you will. It is also a matter of taste. It might turn out you prefer Bourbon or Whiskey.

That's a tough question. I was introduced to whiskey by Jack Daniels, so I found that has a nice flavor and not too harsh. I went to the single malts and they're even better but expensive. I'm assuming you mean bourbon and not scotch. scotch is just nasty to me.

Got some jw red....I don't drink it usually, so taking it to the Fire House for New Years.
I'm a Canadian whiskey man myself. Love R&R and McNaughton's as wither a shooter, chased with coke or mixed with coke. My favorite is Revelstoke but you can't get it in Washington anymore. (stupid state-run liquor stores)

Nice! The MacAllan makes some of the best single malts out there.
Glenfiddich is kinda to single malts like what Budweiser is to beers. It's good, relatively cheap, and everybody has heard of it.
I prefer MacAllan, Oban, Talisker, Balvenie, Clynelish, Caol Ila, and Laphroaig for my single malt scotches.
For small-batch bourbons, I really like Maker's Mark, Knob Creek, Booker's, and especially Basil Hayden's.
Incidentally, the ONLY way to drink something as fine as one of the spirits listed above is at room temperature from a proper glass that allows you to get the full nose of the drink, and with a splash of sring water in it to "activate" the flavors and aromas. Ice will utterly kill a quality scotch or bourbon.

When I did drink (been sober now for 9 months), I loved the hell outta some scotch.
About a year ago, I actually bought a single malt Glen for about 75 dollars
(750ml). It was sooooooooooooo smoooooooooth....the bottle lasted me about 2 hours. Of course I was a mess then. I wouldn't touch the stuff now. However, when I did, I did enjoy Walker and Glen. Uh oh, starting to have a mental relapse...I'm stopping now....hehehehe

Yeah, the Balvenie is a much stronger scotch than the MacAllan, which is one of the more mellow single malts I have ever had. That's not to say it isn't good. In fact, any MacAllan would have to be my favorite. Balvenie has an almost honey flavor to it, with a peaty finish, whereas MacAllan is just pure heaven from start to finish.
God, I really love a fine single malt. Is there anything better in this world to drink?

Though not as well known in the US as some other single malts, Glenmorangie is the biggest selling single malt in Scotland. Known as McDonald and Muir until 1996, the name of the parent company is now officially Glenmorangie plc. Glenmorangie plc also owns Glen Moray and Ardbeg distilleries.
They make an eighteen year old single malt that cannot be beat.
However, Miss Cricket, men drink Scotch on the rocks and they pee standing up. At least they do where I live.
That's Mr. Smith to you Sir.

I know all about Glenmorangie. They make a very good scotch, but there are many that are better, and also much less known. Also, WOMEN need ice in their scotch, men drink it straight, with a little bit of water to activate it. You couldn't handle scotch the way it's meant to be consumed if you honestly think ice does anything but kill all the subtle flavors. Go have another cosmo, silly girl. :action-sm

Anyone ever go to one of the Johnnie Walker Journey of Taste Events?
Went to one a couple years ago. It's free, there's an open bar before hand, and a scotch tasting class-like thing at the end. Fun times, you can learn to be a scotch snob, AND you get a cool little gold "striding man" pin at the end.
Plus, lots of free black label.

I got one a little while ago, and was pissed that I couldn't go, cause of other plans...
I'm more of a blended guy, with Chivas as the scotch of choice, although I have had the occasional single malt, Dalwhinnie and Mcallen 18... which aren't bad either.
I can't say that I've had a bad hangover on the stuff...
If you think that had liquor tastes like shit, stop ordering drinks with well booze and your opinion will change...

I had the blue and it's not as great as everyone says, it's smokier and a bit more complex then the other labels, but what I find is the best deal as far as drinkability from all the JW labels is the green. Fantastic, not so complex as to render it nasty (like laproiag (sp?) for example) but still with tons of character and not nearly as expensive as it should be.

I drink Jack on the rock every night. JD is a good sour mash to get started with, good quality and great taste. Now, I drink single malt scotch a few times a year, Christmass, Thanksgiving...and I think that Glenmoangie 18 year is great stuff but very $$$.

NO!! NO SODA WATER SHOULD EVER TOUCH A FINE SINGLE MALT. You wat to add a small amount of room temperature spring water to the scotch to release the full bouquet and flavor. Anything else will either mask the true flavors or kill it entirely.
Incidentally, I just picked up a new single malt. The Balvenie Doublewood 12 year. It is aged in the traditional American oak barrel, then transferred during the maturation process to a Spanish oak cask which previously held sherry.
It's nose is very fuity and almost has some honey tones. Very sweet taste with hints of vanilla at the beginning and then almost a tobacco flavor at the finish. It is simply excellent. There really is a difference between the Balvenie 10 year and this one. It's more complex.

Ahhh.... sitting down with my 14-year Clynelish. Yum!! So sweet at first, but then the peat smoke kicks in on the back end. Not as smoky as the Lagaulin on Laphroaig, but sometimes those can be a little much. This is the perfect drink when you want something mellow.
