Okay, I've decided I want my XBOX to do more than it does currently. That being said, I have a fairly steady hand with a soldiering iron, but I killed my PS2 while trying to install an INSANELY complicated modchip in it. What is the best modding solution for XBOX that doesn't involve killing it with soldier?

Now that I don't have Live anymore and I don't want a 360, I'm interested in this as well. I know there are clip-in chips, is there an advantage/disadvantage with these over soldering ones, other than the obvious "it's easier"?

Stop having the damn military mod your stuff.
What? Nothing?
Sorry I cant contribute anything else other than a lame joke made with your typo.
I know nothing of XBOX's. There may be something like HD Advance for PS2 but for an XBOX which is an alternative to soldering, but like I said, I know nothing about them.

I installed a solderless chip in an Xbox, but could never get it to sit right. It wouldn't make all of the connections, so I ended up soldering it on. Wasted about an hour trying to get the adapter to fit before I gave up and spent about 5 minutes soldering it. This was about 1 year ago, so they might have improved the solderless adapters by now.
Soldering the chips in is much easier than it looks.
There are no advantages to the solderless adapters, other than ease of installation...if you can get it to install properly.

Where do you get the OS and the burn software for games? Do you have to load it up on a CD and install it or can you download from the interweb directly from the Xbox.

I downloaded and burned the chip bios onto a CD, but if you have your Xbox on your network, you can FTP the bios over to internal Xbox harddrive and load it that way.
You may be able to find the bioses/OS on the chip's site, if not you will have to find it in the newsgroups or P2P.

this chip is VERY easy to install http://www.xbox-modchips.com/xenium-spice.htm
If you are going to mod, it would be a good idea to change out your HD with a nice big 250 or 300 GB drive. Loading the games from the drive really helps load times at startup and inbetween levels.
One item that is overlooked often is replacing the dvd drive. Microsoft used drives from Thompson, Philips, and Samsung. The Samsung are the best, but you can even do better by getting one of these:http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-SAMSUNG-SD-616T-DVD-DRIVE-PART-FOR-XBOX-REPLACEMENT_W0QQitemZ8247205624QQcategoryZ41016QQr dZ1QQcmdZViewItem. THis guy takes a new samsung drive and updates the firmware as well as changes the wiring so that it is plug and play with the XBOX. The benefit of this drive as opposed to a stock drive is that it reads almost all types of home-burned media and has 16X speed.
Good luck bro.

I agree with some of the others. Don't get a solderless chip. They are not worth it, and cause more trouble than they are worth. I installed mine with no soldering skills and it was easier than it looked. I bought the smartxx and like it.
As for XBOX online, if you get a more expensive chip with an on/off switch, you can go online.
There is a debate regarding the mod chips re: price v. quality. In reality, a mod chip is simply a bios for the xbox. The cheapest will do the same thing as the most expensive (i.e. bypass the bios). The real question is do you want the bells and whistles (i.e. room to store more than one bios, on off switch). If you don't plan on using it to go to xbox online, why would you buy an expensive chip.
(wink, wink) Of course, we all know the reason to mod the xbox is to run Linux.

i went with a xenium spice. Good product, took a little tweaking to get up and running. Xbox becomes somthing more than a box that plays racing and fps games when you mod it. web browser and mediacenter, are very cool.
