I hear a moaning, groaning sound coming from my computer (even when I'm not playing porn on it-- Mrrrr, mmrrrpmmph). On a recent bootup I got an extra screeen before windows loaded which said 'chipfan failing or too low a speed', and hten it booted up ok. How difficult is it to repair/replace? what should I look for in terms of fixing it? do they ever need a lil wd-40?

if you're lucky, the heat sink will be clipped on... if not, it could be messy... some are glued on, and maybe a little thermal grease... you could just unscrew the fan from the heat sink, and just replace it that way... there are different wire connectors though... different voltage, 5v or 12v... different sizes like 40x40x10mm for example... the bottom of the fan usually has all that info, and you could just search on google...

What do you know about your motherboard and cpu? Newegg.com has great fans.

Also, be sure to ispect the heat sink, a lot of times tons of dust gets clogged on it. Pass a vaccuum cleaner hose over it. I am assuming you are running a pentium 4 system? The fan may have just come lose. If it is an older chipset (PIII, PII) it may have died, but it would be pretty unusually to lose your fan. THey do sell replacement fans. They are pretty easy to attach.

THis page from intel shows you how the heatsink fan attaches

TreeFortRichards suggestion is what you should do first (or a can of compressed air will do the same thing, just make sure the spaces in the heat sink are cleared out). Most likely its just gunked up (especially if you're a smoker). It could be warped though thats rare. If you need to replace it don't get nervous, it takes a minute. Usually just 4 screws and off it comes. You can get a replacement for under $20 at CompUsa, Fryes etc.

If you have a motherboard that has a Nortbridge(chipset) fan monitoring feature, I am betting that the heatskinf is attached by clips or pins. If you are lucky, you will be able to remove it without having to take the motherboard out of the case.

I would remove the stick heatsnk and fan, and get a passive cooler from Zalman or Coolermaster. We are talking $10 or less here.

It is a larger unit that does not need a fan.

Most boards have a tiny heatsink and a fan that has to spin at a gazillion RPM and moves very little air. The passive sink is much taller and does at least as well as the stock unit.

Good call, i forgot about that...My system is always telling me my fan is too low if i forget to deactivate that sensor (B/c i have a thermaltake speed controll fan)

Check the vid card fan too if applicable, they make weird sounds sometimes, but might be unrelated to the problem.

I don't think that someone being a borderline Eric Estroda fan could be described as "going bad". . . :icon_conf :icon_roll

(CHIP's fan, get it. . . eh??? ) **car crash**
