I am in need of some serious help. I am trying to restore my computer to this past Friday. (I accidentally deleted a file I need)

But I get this message when I go to 'help and support'

"Windows can not open help and support because a system service is not running.

To fix this problem start the service named 'help and support' "

i dont think windows restore will bring back deleted files. i think is only for windows files and software installs.

for data recovery i have used getdataback a number of times.

http://www.runtime.org/

you can dl a free trial and scan to see if you can recover the file you are missing. as long as you didnt overwrite that particular sector of your drive where that file was stored with new data, you can recover the file.

you did check your recycle bin?

Yeah, not in the recycle bin :(

So, if I dl that program, will the trial allow me to restore the file or no?

start up the program under runtime software in your All programs list. then follow the steps. 1st scan for drives. once its on step 2 pick the drive with the most storage space (most likely NTFS partition 10000MB+)

then search the entire drive. it will come back with a large number of files and will let you explore through the contents it found in a windows explorer view. try to locate where the file file was deleted from and you will most likely find the file you deleted. select it for recovery.

it will take a long time to scan. (30 minutes+)

Was it a Windows File? or some personal file?

Try msconfig
type msconfig in the run bar and make sure your comp is set to normal startup
and restart. I could'nt restore before because I was on selecctive start up.
This may allow you to restore to an earlier time.

Do a system restore. It brings back files. That is only if you are usin XP or 2000. Go to Start - Programs - accessories - system tools - system restore - choose the date to go back to the date when you would have had it. If that does not work you are probably SOL.

restore does not roll back files in my docs..

The upside of what System Restore doesn't bring back is that it doesn't regress user documents back to a prior state. Documents with extensions such as .doc and .gif are safe from System Restore (though not from common disasters), as is everything in the My Documents folder. You can use that knowledge to hide files from the rollback scythe. You'll find a list of files that System Restore monitors (and potentially restores from a prior state) in the file windir\System32\Restore\Filelist.xml on Windows Professional, or Windows\System32\Restore\Filelist.xml in XP Home Edition.

i still think data recovery software is your best bet.

Another fantastically useful run command that isn't listed on the site is "sfc /scannow". If you run this command while you have your Windows XP cd inserted in the drive, it will launch the system file checker, which compares core Windows files with the files on the cd and replaces any file which may have been altered or changed by other programs.

For me, this command fixes Windows problems 80-90% of the time, saving me further troubleshooting or even reinstalling windows.

System File Checker Utility (Scan Immediately) sfc /scannow
System File Checker Utility (Scan Once At Next Boot) sfc /scanonce
System File Checker Utility (Return to Default Setting) sfc /revert only if you have to

I have some great luck with Stellar Phoenix FAT & NTFS (http://www.stellarinfo.com) - data recovery software. Using this software I was able to recover almost 98% of my data which I lost due to file system corruption. It not only recovered my lost data but also recovered my lost partition. Although the software is not free but through demo version I was able to see the recovered data. I downloaded the demo version from http://www.stellarinfo.com/partition-recovery.htm. Later on I bought the software to save my recovered data.
Hope this is going to help you too.
Best of Luck

depending on what version of windows youre using it should be saving your previous versions every few hours. if you lost a file or a whole folder, go to the properties on the folder that previously contained what your looking for - there should be a tab called previous versions or something with a list of dates to choose from
