Holy shit. Have you read about this game?
There is a large article on it in either the January or Feb issue of game informer.
I'm not a big FPS fan, but this game may turn me around.
This game has the same setting as the show "Band of Brothers." You play as a fictional member of the 82nd airborne. Unlike a normal FPS wheer you are placed in a location and enemies are put in your way, you spawn in a plane, getting ready for your jump.
You jump from the plane and have complete control of your drop. You can land anywhere you can get to...there is no specific landing pad. Like one of the developers said "it's extremely hard to land crashing through that window in the top of the church steeple...but you can do it." And imagine the look on the nazi's face when you land in the middle of his sniper post.
Speaking of the look on his face. They have used new technology to detail that as well. They mapped actors faces with a variety of emotional expressions. Happy, excited, shocked, alarmed, scared, angry, anxious, etc. Then the AI mixes these expressions based on events in the game to create unique facial expressions. For example, A rookie hiding behind a small wall has a mixture of fear and excitment on his face. A bullet ricochets near him and shock and alarm mix in. His buddy next to him is killed and anger mixes in as well. This also has a cumulative effect. This very same rookie may take on a nervous twitch because of this. As he walks around later in the battle he jumps at the slightest noise and is constantly looking around like a trapped animal. A veteran is several missions will become confident and barely twitch when a bullet streaks past his face.
The AI also looks to be awesome. I can't do it justice here, but every object in the game is assigned a value for cover, importance and other factors. The AI will instantly recognise that a wall has better cover than a group of trees and that he should find better cover when soldiers come from behind. A broken down tank in the trees changes the value of the cover and so he may move there to hide.
In one example a building was designated by the programer as a location of importance. Without tinkering with the individual AIs, he dropped a bunch of Nazis in the building. They instantly split into two groups with one group finding all the best cover and sniper positions in the building as well as covering all the enterence and exit points. The second group took up flanking positions in nearby buildings to provide support.
Then the Allied GI's are dropped at the other side of town. They spread out and take cover positions, moving from cover to cover as they approach the building. One soldier laying down covering fire as another advances. All of this is done without scripting. The AI decides for himself where he needs to be.
There is also 2-4 online multiplayer. Drop from the plane with three of your buddies. If your buddy dies he doesn't respawn, he re-drops. That means he could drop behind the same enemy lines that just killed him. Also if you are playing with two players, a third or fourth person could just drop in and provide unexpected support. Cool.
There are even weapon upgrades based on real life upgrades soldiers in the field did to their weapons, like taping to mags together for quicker re-loads, a bayonet or a better sight.
And the graphics are gorgeous.
This will be the most realistic war FPS ever made and I, for one, will be getting this for the 360 as soon as it comes out. I sense Wackbag drops during the invation of Normandy are looming in the future.
