I remember those t-shirts as a kid. The decals always came off in the dryer and would end up falling apart within weeks.

ahh yes... the brilliant artwork of Ed Roth

speaking of Roth decals... dig my new gas tank. That's an unobtainable, original 60's Roth decal, clearcoted into the paint. Swank!

shrinky dinks.

and speaking of iron-on artwork...

when I was in second grade there was a kid that had a t-shirt with his name on the front in old school iron-on letters in the classic "bubble font". Halfway through the year, the "R" wore off, so instead of GARY, we called him GAY. Of course we didn't really no what gay meant at the time, but we still loffed and loffed.

i met ed "big daddy" roth at a model hobby show in chicago in the early 1990s. he was at the end of the line, having sold the licensing rights to his name and the RF character world to some japanese company. there he sat, in his trademark lincoln stovepipe hat, on a stool, at (i think) revell's booth, as they were re-releasing some model kits from the 60s. he was pretty bleary-eyed and tired, and after i said hello and "thanks" for all his cool stuff when i was a kid, i wandered off. later, i discovered all his counterculturism was something he had turned on, having converted to mormonism and moved to utah in the mid-70s.

icons die hard, baby.

I used to love the shrunken heads kit, where you carve an apple into whatever it was you wanted, used beads for eyes, stuck that fucker in the little shinker oven and you got a wrinkled little head. Tack on some hair & it was kewl.
