I know there are some closet "reading faggits" among the creeps here, so I will let them know that Stephen King apparently isn't as retired as he said he was. I was in Wal-Mart yesterday picking up my TaxCut software and happened to be in the book aisle, and lo and bohold, a BRAND NEW King novel, called Cell. Apparently cell phones totally fuck up all of humanity, and I don't know much more beyond that. Haven't had a chance to crack it open yet. I CAN'T WAIT THOUGH!!!!!
And yes, you can read this in Lil Jimmy's screaming exclamation point voice if you choose. :)

The first two chapters were in Entertainment Weekly last week. They were pretty good.

I can't wait. I was so disappointed when he was making noise about retiring after the Dark Tower novels were completed. Glad to see he's living his own adage: Fish gotta swim, bird gotta fly, writer gotta write. Yay!

The only review I read about the new book was a bad one. I hope they are wrong.

After Reading DarkTowerVII, I really have lost respect for his latest works. I'll check it out. I hope he shocks me.

You didn't care for DT7? What was wrong with it, in your opinion? I thought it was very well done, personally.

I saw that and began to think that it's kind of funny how a guy who's famous for telling scary stories actually seems like a nice, regular guy who's got a sense of humor, when most people would expect him to be some depraved lunatic.

Other than the final encounter with CK lasted oh... like 3 pages and the 'fight' was WEAKSAUCE, the book stunk of *DEADLINE>>>GET IT DONE* It was way too rushed.

Yeah, I will agree with that, it did feel like scribner was breathing down Kings neck to get it out. But I think it still wrapped the main story up pretty nicely. (I would love to see a sub-series concerning North Central Positronics though. That and Sombra Group.)

I think the book could have easily been 500 pages longer and taken another 6 months to clear things up. I'm not upset with the 'ending' at all. I'm just upset that the fight with the dude/thing in the house before the ending (can't remember his name) lasted longer and was much better than the finale.

Honestly? I think King lost his passion for that story toward the end. (hoo hoo)

Well, finished Cell. Sucked. Nuff said.
I dunno, but I cannot get into Stephen King books. I tried and tried with different books, but after like 3 pages of pure descrpitive writing, I just can't continue reading. Maybe I'll give it another shot.

i think this new one is about an author who hides underneath a porch with a 'friend' to hide from cellphones. after the dark tower's 5.6 and 7 where he mustve gotten drunk and just threw any old shit together just for the sake of selling books and finishing the series im not going to go out and get excited about him with a new book. if i hear its super duper maybe ill get a paperback version for a few bucks. i dont want to waste money on hardcovered crap

Just finished it last night. The first 100 pages were great and then the wheels came off. Had a lot of potential but King complicated the story to much with the "phoners" mutating. I wanted more of a '28 days later' plotline...decent read and fairly short for a King book. Also it was better than 'From a Buick 8' the last new novel King wrote since I'm not in to the Dark Tower novels yet.

He relies on that because his dialogue usually stinks.
I felt DT7 was a good closing, not the best of the series but solid. I think it was the best ending.
I think Wolves of the Calla was the best of the last three.

I could never really get into Stephen King books, but I did like the Bachman books.

I actually liked From a Buick 8, myself. A little short on originality, but not a bad read. Cell just didn't go anywhere. He NEVER bothered to explain the origin of the cell signal, which annoyed me. I also didn't like Clay's "solution" to his sons being wiped. All in all, on a scale of 1 to 10, I have to give this one a 3, maybe a 4. Any other writer and it would have been a 7, but this is King, so he's on a different scale.

I would have liked to have known but since it was homage to Romero it's appropriate since George never explains in any of his movies the reason the zombies appear.
Also did you read the excerpt at the end of the book for his new book coming out in the fall....now that seemed like a terrible bore.

The novels have steadily been getting worse, ever since Insomnia. The short stories are still usually well written, though.

I own every King book including On Writing, a few biographies and 2 books by Tabitha. I actually have more than one copy of several books. In the 80's, I subscribed to his newsletter Castle Rock and wrote a few papers and speeches on him. To sum up - I kinda like the guy. ;)
I still say that his best works were written while he was in a drunken blackout. He doesn't recall writing a lot of his classics.
I picked up Cell the other day and read it very quickly. Typical Stephen King Value Meal. Flawed hero protagonist with family issues, quirky "event", band of bit player co-horts, mysterious and mystical antagonist, telepathy-dreams-falshbacks-yaddayadda, a journey, ethical choices, and a grandiose and all too short ending. I enjoyed the book up until the end. Same with a Value Meal. (Did Johnny Gee reboot to normal or not?!?)
They will prolly make a movie out of it and it will suck. Grr.
