I went up to keystone this weekend for some snowboarding (first time on a board). getting the rentals was bad enough (try standing in a heated room with all your gear on for almost 45 mins). i wasnt liking it already.
Standing in the lift line, I look at the hill and tell my friends "that looks pretty wicked, isn't there any where I can just get the basics down? (like standing UP?)" and they were like "no its cool, come on well help you". so first thing is the ski lift...not good if you are afraid of heights. yikes. so we get to the top and I try to go down, yeah. i couldn't even stand up on the board. after what seemed like hours, i finally get it and it was okay/pretty fun...the thing that sucked was the next day...i am SO sore...my armpits are sore, my neck is sore...everything is sore. i just want to cry...i am never doing that again...ever. if you want to see the mountain, check out my myspace there are pics on there. :icon_redf

man.....i didn't bother trrying snowboarding out til i was 28. it takes roughly 20 hours on the slopes to figure it all out.

you have to know how to do a toe turn and how to do a heel turn. your stance is also very important. if you try to ride while you are standing straight up you have no edge to ride and you will bust your ass(i'm assuming you figured that out the hard way)

the best "stance" is this:
(this is exactly what i told my buddies when they were learning)

make like you're just about to sit down to take a shit. knees slightly bent.

keep this shit in mind the next time you go and you may actually start figuring it out.

This is exactly why I don't want to be 4+ hours from home when I learn to ski & snow board. I can't drive that long, being that sore.

i used to live 15 minutes from mountain creek so it was a very short ride for me.

i learned how to ski when i was 13 and snowboarding became "popular" @ 86' or 87' i never bothered but since i got it down pat, i'd never go back to skiing.

come to think of it i posted a pic of black earl a while ago in one of the PS threads from when the bbboys sent him up there.

I am just learning too. This was my first year.

The rental joint sucks but what are you gonna do. I just got a board and some clothing, kept the rental boots for next time, this way I won't have to wait in line again.

I'll buy boots next season, low on cash now.

Stick with it, it gets 'more funner'

i snow blade, probably the gayest snow sport, but i can do it like its nothing. ive rollerbladed for 10 years and snowblads are like rollerblades on snow for me. its just the most dangerous. my best friend broke his ankle first time down the mountain on em.... he will never go with me again.

dood, i love the snowblades, i have used em 4 times... total about 10 days and i can take blue/blacks and black fairly well. im more outta shape than i was when i originally started, but they are really alot of fun.

no need for poles, and you dont go down the mountain sideways.

I loved them for speed, and getting some air on bumps/jumps lol. But year they where really cool, I haven't skiid in probably 2 and ahalf years now and won't to start but i don't wanna get on the f'n bunny hill, I skiid for 7 years strait from when i was 13 going on black diamonds, now i'll be on the bunny hill and blue f'n squars....HA

This is why I ski. Snowboarding is fine, I can do it well enough, but I just like skiing better. Plus, I fucking hate all the little pothead teenage boarders that feel like they have to sit at the top on the hill to strap in or do whatever else it is they do, and then they feel the need to stop and sit in random places on the way down. Also, mosr boarders don't really have a clue to ride correctly, so they are constantly one shitty move away from crashing into a skier. Plus, the awful noise that boards make when turning drives me nuts. Places like Alta, in Utah, are ski only, and it is wonderful.

FUCK YOU SNOWBOARDING!! I want my mountains back!!

I alway want to just take my ski pole and smack those morons in the back of the head. They stand there buckling up right in front of the ski lift.

Just in case I get a crappy instructor this weekend...what else should I *not* do as a skier/snowboarder? It'll be my first time on the slopes.

If you do decide to try again, try going to a local ski shop before you leave and rent from there instead of from the mountain. If renting snowboarding equipment is anything like renting skiing equipment, you will get better stuff from your local store than you will on the mountain and the price will be comparable.

If you're a first timer and getting lessons, you don't need to worry about what to do/not to do. The instructor will be taking you up the bunny hill where nobody really knows what to do yet. So you won't be getting in anyone's way.

The only real advice is not to let the mountain intimidate you. Once you learn how to turn and stop, you will be able to do something bigger than the bunny hill with ease. The biggest problem that I see adults who are learning have is that they psyche themselves out when looking down the mountain.

The second piece of advice...have fun.

i think the big difference between skiers and snowboarders is that skiers actually seem to take the time to learn. a lot of snowboarders i see try to just go and don't think a whole lot about what they're doing wrong.

it all depends....

i'm 34, i learned how to ski when i was 13.

i didn't bother to learn how to ride til i was 28.

i'm an expert skiier and i wouldn't say i'm an expert boarder but i can hit the diamond and double diamond trails without any problems.

On the bunny hill, won't we all be in each other's way???? :)

I'm really looking forward to this weekend. I'll probably be sore as hell on Monday and full of black & blues (I bruise easily), but I'm hoping it's worth it. Especially since I just bought snow pants, fancy gloves, and nice warm socks.

Yes. But nobody will be pissed at you because it's kind of expected that nobody knows what they are doing.

When you go on a chair lift that services intermediate and expert trails (as well as long beginner trails) and then get in the way of people, those people get pissed off because people going on those lifts should be capable of getting out of the way.
