Guys I made a mistake tonight and I ended up in a ditch. This web forum is my network of friends. I NEED SOME ADVICE. I drove my car in a ditch tonight. Thinking quickly I left the scene in a hurry and had tow service bring my car to me. He said the police were on the scene while he was there. I just got my car back and so far I havent heard from the police. I am scared shitless. I am asking anyone who might know the laws about this to reply with advice. Am I in for it this next morning or am I going to be okay. The cops havent showed up yet but I know they were on the scene and have me plates. They do not have me at the scene of the wreck and I was the only one involved. So should I worry or am I in the clear? I NEED ADVICE REALLY BAD ON WHAT I SHOULD EXPECT IF ANYTHING AND WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I AM IN A BIND!

is this some sort of joke? you drove into a ditch, got it towed out...and now think the cops are gonna nail you with some "hit and run type" charge? well, unless you caused some sort of major damage to the surrounding area I don't think anybody is gonna give a shit.

Unless there is a body wrapped up in your tranny, you should have no problems.
Yes officer. I crashed and left to get a tow truck to pull me out.
A minor leaving the scene ticket is a whole lot better than a DWI(my guess?)

If you didn't cause any damage to anyone or anything (besides your own car) and if you did cause any damage it's under $500 bucks (NYS) you have nothing to worry about. Sometimes the cops will just take down your info, but not do anything with it.
I hit some black ice years ago and had a similar situation, nothing happened.

Yes, you should be o.k. you may get charged with any damage you caused but since you weren't drunk (or they can't prove you were) it shouldn't be too bad. All those cars broke down on the side of the freeway are checked out by the cops but you think they arrest everyone of the owners for leaving them there if they break down. Don't get all panicky. The best thing to do is call the police station and see if anything is going on with the thing. they may say a ticket was issued or something so take care of it. Like I said you may have to pay for some damages you caused but other than that you'll just get a ticket or something.

They can't prove you were drunk, so don't worry about a DWI. Maybe they can get you for damages to the guard rail or whatever. If the cops ask some questions, say you had a tire blowout or you swerved to avoid hitting a critter and wound up in a ditch. As long as no one else was involved you are in the clear. Where you may be screwed is with your insurance company about getting your car fixed.

What town is this? I'd be happy to burn this thread to a CD and anonymously mail it to the police.

dude, talk about paranoid...
so you drove your car into a ditch and couldn't get out. you didn't have a cell on you, so you left and called for a tow truck to bring your car to you. people lose control of their vehicles sometimes, it happens. if no one got hurt and the only damage that happened was probably to your own vehicle, then i don't see why there would be any problems with the cops. if anything, the cops were there because they thought it was dead and abandoned, which is wasn't. if you hear from the cops in the near future, just tell them what happened. they likely won't do a damn thing. if you're so worried, leave a note on your windshield next time in case any cops come by to check out your car.

OK, just had a friend go threw the same thing about a month ago. This was in California, I was there so this is not second hand.
He was reaching to pick up his cell phone off of the floor and left the road causing minimal damage to his Explorer. But, he was stuck. He called me and I came to pick him up and went to get his road service information because he didn't have it in the car. We left, called a tow truck and I dropped him off at the hospital due to a large 'goose egg' in his head. I then returned to his Explorer to wait for the tow truck with out him. CHP was already there. I explained to them what had happend and what was going on. I then got in the car put it in 4-Wheel drive and got it out then had the tow truck take it to his house. The cops told me that 'IF' my friend wanted to report it for insurance he could call them for a report. 'IF' not then because of the minimal damage and that we had aranged the tow there was nothing more that needed doing. To this day no one has contacted my friend and his insurance knows nothing.
If you are questioned use something like this for your reasoning and you should be alright.

I agree
I did the same thing about 9 years ago. I didn't make the curve and ended up in the ditch. I walked 7 miles to my cousin's house. Slept. Woke up and had him tow it back to his place. Turns out my car was on top of some phone line box(no ticket) and I damaged a camping parks sign($300 payment). The cops only wrote a letter saying that I had to pay for a new sign( the only way they knew about it was that the asshole that owns the campgrounds took pictures and then took them to the cops. I got back at him though. When he got his expensive bigger sign my buds and I Spray painted it all black. He took it down and still has not put a new one up. I think he knows that I will get that one too.

Yeah, expect heavy legal repercussions, and even the revocation of your drivers license...... for the rest of your life!

just turn yourself in, nothing bad will happen. THey will probably assume that you were drunk and fled to not get a drunk driving thing but they can't prove it. Just say you were falling asleep or something....whatever, i think you'll be allright. Its just better to quit your worrying

You will be arrested soon and you will be hauled off to jail maybe. I don't see how you have a problem if you just drove into a ditch and did no damage to anyone else's property.
What you should do now is go down to Best Buy and buy a big Sirius unit and throw it in the car, that way when the cops come and question you why you drove into the ditch, you can tell them the unit fell off the dash and made the car lose control. You can also use it to your advantage in case you were drunk, you can tell them that you just fled because you didn't want anyone to see you had that big a brick of a unit:action-sm

They are DEFINITELY going to impound your car for a while as evidence until it settles. If you hit the guardrail, get your checkbook out. A guy I know paid like $2000 to the parkway for totaling his car into a guardrail.
Another thing is that they'll probably make you shave your head. This way they can test the new hair growing in for alcohol and drugs. This other guy I know had that happen to him. He had to shave his head and go into the DA's office once a week for 2 months to get hairs plucked for testing.

That's a good thing to think about...I will check and see if the ditch has taken on legal representation yet. I am sure its just a matter of time before "the ditch" takes action.:icon_mrgr

you should be fine as long as you didnt' hit anybody else. if it was just you that ran into the ditch, you left to get a tow truck, you had no choice. no harm done. happened to my mom a few years ago, nothing more than tow truck fees.
