OK, so after being a satisfied customer for a couple years, Nextel's service has plumetted in my area. Dropped calls are happening all the time, service is going in and out, and I'm just not satisfied anymore.
I was thinking of going to Verizon since they are known to have the best service in this area (I used to be a customer, and the coverage was very good), but T-Mobile has some really incredible deals on their web site. If anyone has them, and could share their experience, it'd be appreciated. I've also been hearing Cingular's coverage used to be shit, but now it's on par with Verizon.
I use my phone most (95% of the time) in NYC and NJ but also Baltimore/DC and DE on occasion. Thanks!

Look at T-Mobile's coverage map...
If you never leave the NYC area its fine. Outside of there it sucks balls. There is a reason they are so cheap.

According to JD Power & Assoc. T-Mobile has the best customer satisfaction rate of all carriers. I've had them since they were VoiceStream back in 98 and will never switch. I get more minutes than I will ever use and their online picture uploading and other features all work flawlessly.
I drive between DC and Florida and have never had a signal drop.

I live and mainly travel all over Central/North Jersey (Hunterdon, Morris and Somerset Counties) and T-Mobile is sketchy. At times they are great, but they do have their dead areas- and I have noticed that people around me with Verizon get a clear signal from the same spot. I would pay an extra 10 or 20 a month for Verizon. I am going to switch when my contract is up.

Horrible service in Central NJ and had several dropped calls in fucking MANHATTAN. I've used Sprint, TMobile and Verizon in Jersey and NY, and Verizon has the best coverage.

Ive had no problems with t-mobile, from Poughkeepsie to NYC. No problems on various business trips (atlanta, Philly, charlotte, chicago, milwaukee).

That's the part of NJ where I would use it most. I also heard T-Mobile uses a different signal spectrum that often reflects off of buildings rather than penetrating them like Cingular and Verizon.

My nextel contract is up at the end of the week, I've always thought it was a POS, all of my friends were on it so I bought in. I wish I hadn't, the walkie-talkie feature was nice for like a week then became annoying...
After it expires, i am going Cingular. A friend of mine is a wireless analyst and he recommended them pretty highly (he has verizon). According to him their#1 priority is increasing thier network coverage. I would stay with either cingular or verizon...
www.phonescoop.com is a pretty good site for some info...
Good Luck Bro...

My sister is in Westchester and has no problems w/ Tmobile. More info, I had tmobile when I lived in Freehold, NJ. Never got a signal indoors, no signal between exit 8-10 on the turnpike, dropped calls in Manhattan, Intermittent service through Central Jersey/Bucks County, PA. They replaced the phone 3 times and still had shitty service. Broke the contract, went w/ Verizon and absolutely no problems.

I know I'm no where near you, but I'm a customer of T-Mobile. I've been for about 4 years. The coverage is really hit and miss in Milwaukee, and god forbid I don't travel an hour in any direction out of the Milwaukee metropolotian area, then a special feind called Roaming overtakes my phone.

its actually marked Tmobile because it is from germany and I guess they offer it over there.
you can get ones that are unmarked/unbranded too.
you can get phones way better than anything the providers sell... they will only work with Tmobile or Cingular tho (GSM providers). check out www.mobilebee.com and www.gsmarena.com
the coverage is better than nextel so I'm happy so far.

Just wondering, what is a GSM unlocked phone? I've got Tmobile, and I like that phone you posted.

I ditched my VoiceStream service in mid 2002. I drove a car carrier between Newark and Long Island, NY.. it was always dropping calls and losing the signal. Plus.. the phone didn't work in my house in West Orange unless I was standing in front of a north facing window.
Verizon has been far better than I expected. The only "dead" area I've found is around the North Carolina/Virginia border on both 95 and 85. Otherwise there are only a couple of known areas where the signal drops long enough to disconnect me and that's usually because I'm in a heavily shrouded area.

GSM is a type of sevice provder. Tmobile and cingular are GSM.
unlocked phones are "world market" phones not offered by the domestic cell phone providers.
they will work with Tmobile or cingular.
go to www.gsmarena.com to see reviews on phones
you can buy them at www.mobilebee.com but if you can find local stores that have unlocked phones, thats better, you'll get a better deal. Theres tons of them in Brooklyn (dunno where you live tho)
that phone is bad ass and is better than anything offered by the providers. the samsung t809 tmobile offers now is pretty good too though.
