I was just doing a little studying for my Fundementals of Broadcasting class and I noticed a paragraph that that said "Ethics: Outrageous Radio" I cant copy it word from word but the textbook is "Broadcasting, Cable the Internet and Beyond" (Dominic, Messere, Sherman).

On Page 87, it basically starts off by saying "Until 2002, Howard Stern was perhaps the most infamous and controversal of a number of radio personalities, who are earning a reputation for "outrageous radio." That distinction may now belong to Opie and Anthony.

They basically then go on about what happened and mentioned a few Deejays in some other cities and STERN was not mentioned until the end of the paragraph!!! BTW, they spelled it "Greg" in the text!

here is the site...I don't know if its mentioned but if you want to read more...go back to College!!! Off to class!

I think its kind of interesting. Think about it; if you're in a textbook, it means you made a mark in history.

Well, technically, O+A Didn't make the mark in history. TECHNICALLY a 2 Point Conversion in a church made a mark on history.

Just sayin.

Good find "Sidekick Dave". Don't listen to the nay sayers on this website. Some of these people just have to type out their negative bullshit no matter what. I think it's their way of getting post counts up. Thank you sir

Why? It's not every day you see Opie and Anthony in a textbook. That's pretty damn impressive.

Hey, I'd say that's a big deal.

I think, if I understand you correctly, your college textbook mentions O&A by name, and says they are more edgey than Howard, right? It sounds like they also go into the "incident", and some other radiio people, as well.

I'd say that's a pretty big deal, Sidekick Dave.

Listen to what Chief79 says, and don't pay attention to the "so whatters". It's a good find, and I thank you for sharing it with us.:)

I don't have an Amazon.com account with previous activity, so I cannot grab the full quotes from the book, but here's what I got so far...
http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0072904410/ref=sib_dp_srch_bod/002-1237566-1505669?v=search-inside&keywords=Opie

2 pages with references to Opie in the Paperback edition (2003):

1. on Page 87:
"... Ethics: Outrageous Radio Until 2002, Howard Stern was perhaps the most infamous and controversial of a number of radio personalities who are earning a reputation for "outrageous radio." That distinction may now belong to Opie and Anthony. Increasing competition for advertising, especially in the nation's largest markets, has led to an unprecedented series of incidents that have stretched the bounds, some observers say, of good taste and fair play. Outrageous radio is also known as "raunch radio," and its air personalities are often called "shock jocks." WNEW-FM's Greg Hughes (known as Opie) and his sidekick, Anthony Cumia, were fired by Infinity Broadcasting after the duo broadcast a live account of a couple having sex in the entrance of St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan. The incident was one in a series of contests to see who would have sex in the riskiest place. The incident wasn't the only time Opie and Anthony were in trouble. Two years earlier the duo was fired from their Boston gig for a hoax in which they claimed the mayor of Boston had died in a car crash."

2. on Page 193:
"... it possible for such talk to backfire? Sam Adams Brewery sponsored the now famous "Sex for Sam" contest on the Opie and Anthony show that led to a couple being arrested for lewd behavior in St. Patrick's Cathedral. Several weeks after the event Jim Koch, president of Sam Adams, was still apologizing for the broadcast and acknowledged that it was a mistake for him to be at the studio when the incident was broadcast.Evidently he did not complain while the broadcast was in progress, which could be seen as tacit approval for the stunt. Koch now says there's a danger that the "media you use to reach your demographic may not reflect core values of your company."

Anybody here with an Amazon account, that can search for the entire thing?
There's an option to search for keywords (i used "Opie").

Edit: I'm pooling searches bit by bit to get the full quotes. I think I got it all now.

The incident wasn't the only time Opie and Anthony were in trouble. Two years earlier the duo was fired from their Boston gig for a hoax in which they claimed the mayor of Boston had died in a car crash."

And theres more in the text:

"In St. Louis, a radio station aired phone messages from from a well-known TV weatherman talking about a love affair and played an interview with a woman who claimed the weatherman was harrassing her. The next day, the weathercaster dies in a fiery plane crash that appeared to be suicide."

"In Chicago, a DJ suggested to listeners that a TV anchorwoman-recently widowed-was pregnant by a Chicago Bulls player. She sued for defamation."

Two disc jockeys in Denver kicked off their new show with a half-page newspaper advertisement that resembeled the popular "fold-in" section in Mad Magazine. When properly folded, the ad produced an attack on a competing station, complete with a four-letter word not normally seen in a family newspaper. The competing station has had its own problems lately, when its morning team made jokes about a man who suffered a seizure and drowned in a lake as his two children watched."

"Today, Stern may seem tame in comaprison with Opie and Anthony, but the redoubtable Mr. Stern himself made international headlines when the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council ruled that stations in Montreal and Toronto breached the industrys Code of Ethics by carrying his morning program. It didn't help that the controversy provoked Howard to go on the offensive against Canadians in general, and French-speaking Canadians in particular. As the CBSC delicately put it, Mr. Stern used "abusive and discriminatory comments directed at French Canadians and other identifiable groups."

"In response to these and other excesses, the FCC has increased enforcement of its rules regarding pranks and hoaxes (including $1.2 million fine for a variety of transgressions by Mr. Stern). But the bottom line is that outrageous radio seems to attract audiences. Like "tabloid TV," raunch radio has become a part of the modern media scene."

I just got around to listening to Hoo Hoo's friday show from last week. I heard a country song remix that sounded an awful lot like the b-b-b-boys bit from a few weeks back. Was Stern ripping the boys off once again? Hoo Hoo.

A text book? Not bad.

But I'll really be impressed when they're mentioned on the Discovery Channel.

Then whenever Ant mentions something that happened to them at WNEW for example, Opie can say "how do you know that?" And Ant can say "Uh, I think I probably heard it on the Discovery Channel or something". Cue Professor Anthony Jingle.
