The BIG EAST sponsorship provides XM with the exclusive satellite radio broadcast rights to the BIG EAST Men's and Women's Basketball Championships, and select regular season games during football and basketball seasons.

Feb. 13, 2006

Washington, D.C. - XM Satellite Radio (NASDAQ: XMSR), the nation's largest satellite radio service with more than six million subscribers, announced today that it has signed a long-term agreement with The BIG EAST Conference. The BIG EAST sponsorship provides XM with the exclusive satellite radio broadcast rights to the BIG EAST Men's and Women's Basketball Championships Presented by Aéropostale, along with select regular season games during football and basketball seasons.

As "The Official Satellite Radio Service of The BIG EAST Conference," XM will have marketing rights to all BIG EAST Championship events, and promotional use of the BIG EAST marks, media and other proprietary marketing assets. Nelligan Sports Marketing, Inc., who represents the official BIG EAST Sponsorship Program, brokered this agreement for the Conference.

"Not only is XM Satellite Radio's new partnership with the BIG EAST Conference an outstanding way for fans to follow their favorite BIG EAST teams throughout the year, regardless of where they call home, it also provides opportunities for XM to further expand our subscriber base and extend our lead as the nation's largest satellite radio provider," said Kevin Straley, vice president of talk programming for XM Satellite Radio.

"XM Satellite Radio's commitment to college sports is extraordinary and we are truly pleased to welcome XM to the BIG EAST family," said Mike Tranghese, BIG EAST Commissioner. "This partnership gives BIG EAST fans throughout the country the opportunity to follow their teams, especially during our Basketball Championship Tournaments in March."

XM will begin broadcasting BIG EAST Conference games on February 15 at 7:30 p.m. ET on XM Channel 200 when the Pittsburgh Panthers take on the Providence Friars. Additional XM broadcasts include:
- February 22, 9 p.m. ET, XM Channel 200 - DePaul vs. Louisville
- March 1, 7:30 p.m. ET, XM Channel 200 - St. John's vs. Villanova

XM will also broadcast all 11 games of The BIG EAST Men's Basketball Championship Presented by Aéropostale. The 2006 BIG EAST Men's Basketball Championship is slated for Madison Square Garden in New York City on March 8-11. The "World's Most Famous Arena" has been the host of the championship since 1983 - the longest running tournament at one venue of any conference in the country. The format will continue as in previous years, with 12 member institutions participating and seeding based on regular season finish. The top four squads in the league standings will earn first-round byes. A complete schedule for all BIG EAST Conference games broadcast on XM, including tournament games, is available online at http://www.xmradio.com.

Yeah, I don't exactly see this fitting the criteria for a "take that, Howie!" statement.

Thats true, its not a fuck you Howie. There are a lot of college sports nuts out there so it might attract some subs. I personally won't listen but its good to see XM trying to make the service better for everyone.

Maybe not your cup of tea but it might be for others.

This is a great announcement. Of course I'm partial to the Big East because I am a huge Mountaineers fan and graduate. I also do a lot of traveling and being able to listen to the games on the radio is terrific.

It's also one more way XM is providing more and more for their subscribers.

I think it is a good move, and I'd liked to have Nascar stay as well. Now if they'll pick up Conf USA.

Go Herd!

i like having the acc and pac 10 games on xm already. college sports (baseball aside) is more important for radio because alumni are so spread out and are less inclined to buy a television sports package. but thats just my opinon.

with 5 ranked teams and two being in the top five the big east is the best conference in college basketball today. did anyone watch the Nova Uconn game last night on ESPN (i was there) it may have been the game of the year.

Villanova on XM. Ill take it.

From what I understand xm didn't want to match Nascar's price demands while the little doggie company just pays everyone whatever they want. The bank has to run out soon.

Down in the south they listen to NASCAR On the radio...went down to atlanta on business and thought it was the funniest thing ever...

I do think College Basketball works on the radio....more so than NASCAR...I think Hockey works too...but yeah, it's not baseball.

The Big East is the shit now....I will probably listen to St John Games on XM...maybe more...

Kinda like the fact that I'm not going to listen to Oprah or Ellen, but I understand it makes sense..

I too am sad to see Nascar go, but I think I see where XM is going. The NFL and Nascar are primarily one day event sports, aside from MNF and the ocassional Thursday and Saturday event. They are also, in my humble opinion, primarily visual events; so why waste the money on something people are more likely to watch than listen to. I know hockey is also a 'visual', but those games are on weekdays as well, when people are more like to have things going on and will have the games on in the background (and I'm sure the NHL contract is a shitload less than the NFL).
Let the doggy company choke on its overpriced programming.

I'm glad XM made this signing. Now with the ACC, Big Ten, Big East, and Pac-10, they have four huge conferences. The only great addition left would be the SEC, but I had much more interest in XM adding the Big East than any other conference.

The only thing I will miss about Nascar on XM is the coverage after the race. They have lots of interviews with drivers well after the broadcast on tv and commercial radio is done.

Until this year, I could catch the away games for my fav college team (Marshall) on tv. Then they signed the contract with CSTV, and now I don't see them. I have to listen on the radio, but the station that carries them sucks around here. Would be nice to hear them on XM, but I don't see them adding CUSA anytime soon.

I can hear my second team Penn State though.

I was a student the last time they played. Yeah, Marshall is definitly in a rebuilding period. I hope they get back on track. And no, I'm not above having beers with a herd fan. In fact my sister graduated from Marshall and my mom as well.

I'm not sure I will be there for the game. The wife and I are debating getting a mini package. If we are, I'll PM you and let you know where we'll be. We usually tailgate in the law school parking lot up the hill behind the stadium.

The Big Least is not an elite conference. Let XM talk to me when they nut up and sign the only conference that matters in football and basketball, THE SEC...

On a speculation thought, what should happen if Sirius crumbles before the next NASCAR season. Am I correct in that XM still has broadcasting rights through this year starting Sunday? If Sirius is still around I will probably break down and buy a cheap unit the size of my dashboard so I can keep up with the inbreds...

That's right, I deserve it. I can't believe what a shitbomb my boys laid in the Sugar. However, I stand by conferances on the whole through the past and in the next few years SEC is the class of college sports. I want to see the BIG EAST add some god C-USA teams and climb back to a big time level
