Well... I know it's only February 15th, but the Tribe's pitchers and catchers report tomorrow, and it's time to start speculating about who might make the roster, who could break out, and who can live up to their potential from last year.
I am still very upset about the Crisp trade. I just don't get it. If Crisp is good enough to start in CF for Boston, then he sure as hell is good enough to start in LF for Cleveland. People keep saying that we got a dynamite 3B prospect in Marte, but everybody thought Brandon Phillips would be the next A-Rod, and what is he doing now? Yes, that's right... NOTHING.
Let's hope this Michaels dude they got from Philly can break out when given a chance to play every day. If not, the Tribe is in trouble, because the White Sox only got better, the Tigers could be for real, and the Twins are always dangerous.
Don't even get me started about replacing Millwood with fucking Paul Byrd. :icon_roll

as much as i HHHHHHATED the coco trade, because every single person is cleveland loved him, i just hope it works out for hte best. one thing i did like from the trade was not forcing vic behind the plate every single game because we didn't have any other catchers that were worth anything. so it'll be nice to give him a break and let him play 1B sometimes depending on the L or R pitcher. it just sucks that it had to be coco that leaves. i just don't get why we got a 3rd basemen...... we have aaron boone, even though he had a slow start last year, the mid and end of season he was doing really well.
i got my 20 game plan for the weekends, which also includes opening day. sectin 172 row U.... anybody else going to games? i'll have my Where's Chester shirt on as usual.

I don't know what management was thinking this offseason. They were so close to the playoffs but they didn't really do anything to improve the team and it's even worse in a lot of regards. Paul Bryd is a really weak replacement for Kevin Millwood. I don't see why they didn't try and find someone better than Aaron Boone. I originally bashed Jason Michaels but saw he had a .399 OBP last year so I take back what I said about him for now.

and did i hear correctly the other day on espn when they said Einer Diaz is back on the tribe? i believe to AAA Buffalo.... i always liked him, even though his hitting stunk on ice. he was a GRRRRRRREAT catcher behind the plate, there wsa a huge difference after even one year working with Sandy behind the plate. i'd rather see einer behind the plate on days victor plays 1st instead of the other catcher we just got. i think we got him from the Drays. which doesn't sound too good....

From ESPN.com
PHOENIX -- New York Mets closer Billy Wagner and Cleveland pitcher C.C. Sabathia withdrew Wednesday from the U.S. roster for the World Baseball Classic and were replaced by Washington right-hander Gary Majewski and Yankees left-hander Al Leiter.
Leiter becomes the fourth player from the Yankees on the 30-man roster, joining shortstop Derek Jeter, third baseman Alex Rodriguez and center fielder Johnny Damon.
Two other Nationals are on the team: closer Chad Cordero and catcher Brian Schneider.
The roster for the first round, initially announced Feb. 14, has to be finalized by noon ET Wednesday.
Wagner, who signed a $43 million, four-year contract with the Mets during the offseason, said he needed more time to get his arm in shape.
"I just didn't feel like I was ready yet," the left-hander said in Port St. Lucie, Fla. "I want to do what's right for me and my country, and I'm not a very good pitcher in March. I didn't want to hurt the [WBC] team."
"Although I would love to pitch in the inaugural World Baseball Classic and am proud to represent my country, I will not be ready to pitch in a competitive-game environment when play begins on March 7," Sabathia said in a statement released by the Indians.
Thank god! The last thing this team needed was that fatass going out and hurting himself. If they are going to have any chance this year, he needs to be the pitcher he was the second half of last year. I am looking for a 20 win season out of him. He has all the talent to do it, but his weight and his brain have always held him back. Maybe he can fianlly put it all together this year.

Spring training records are meaningless, and with the World Baseball Classic going on it will be even odder. The Tribe should be good this year. It all depends on the pitching. Sabathia has to come up with a nice 20 win season. The hitting and defense are solid and despite Coco going bye-bye they should be fine. If Victor Martinez can get off to a good start and Cleveland makes the playoffs he might be the MVP.

Well.... let's not get carried away. The Tribe was a 93-win team that really didn't do anything to get better, whereas the White Sox were world champs and they got significantly better. The central is going to be a fucking dogfight this year, and I think it's very possible the wild card will come out of it. I say the Tribe needs 95 wins to make the playoffs this year, just like last year. They certainly can do it if all the pieces fall correctly.

Mark Shapiro is not John Hart. He won't dump off true talent for some shitty middle reliever (Brian Giles for Ricardo Rincon :arrrh: ). I think Grady, Victor, Peralta, and Hafner will be with the team for at least the next 5 years. Hopefully, they can get at least one World Series out of this core, who I think will end up being better and more remembered than Lofton, Ramirez, Thome, Belle, and Alomar when it's all said and done.

Hey, fuckers - did you see that nice banner the White Sox unveiled? Wouldn't you like one of your own? Use that jealousy as a motivation to actually play the game right, not just go through the motions. If they keep the shit up that we saw last night all season, this will be an awful year.

Nice win yesterday. Good to see everybody contribute. GREAT to see Blake and Boone actually do something. Boone had 9 hits all of last April, and he's got 5 already in 2 games this year. It looks like he is all the way back from that broken leg. He is going to be a key to our offense. If he can keep up production like this, we are going to have a good year. I am hoping for .285, 25 HR, 85 RBI from him.
Westbrook looked like he was in mid-season form. He had the White Sox confused all day. With Sabfatia going down for 3-5 weeks, we need him and Lee to step up and carry the team.
Let's take the rubber match today and start this season off right.

I know it's only 6 games in, but what a way to start the season. You gotta win in your division to have any chance of reaching the playoffs, and the Tribe is doing just that. They put the smack down on their 2 main rivals, and showed everybody that this isn't going to be like last April, when they were 9-14 (ugh). Hell, I'll take a split with Detroit. The Tigers are no longer a bottom-dweller. They really only have a decent offense (other than Shelton - check him for steroids), but they have a proven manager, and their pitching could be great this year. Everybody talks about the Tribe and the White Sox, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Tigers hanging around all season.

Not at all. They slipped up against Seattle (bound to happen from time to time), and split with Detroit, which - as I said - is fine with me. There was no way they could keep up the 6-1 pace, and they are not nearly as bad as the 2-4 pace over the last 6. It was just a little "correction". The White Sox, while still good, are not as good as last year. They have offensive flaws, and their pitching is only decent, from what I have seen in the early going. Plus, the Tribe went through utter hell that last week of the season last year, and they have all learned from it. Look at their start this year. Guys are hitting the ball well, pitchers are pitching well, and they are doing all the little things.
Case in point - Casey Blake had 5 (yes 5!) hits ALL LAST YEAR with 2 outs and runners in scoring position. This year, he is already 5 for 7 in just 14 games. Different approach, different results. The White Sox could be looking up at the Tribe all season.
By the way - did the Orioles even know there was a game today? Good god. 15-1? That was a massacre. It could easily have been 20-1. How about this Johnson guy? The brought him in simply to eat up innings, and he is already 2-0 with a 1.83 ERA. Not bad for the 5th starter.

Yet another sloppy game. From Westbrook pitching like a fag again and not going inside on batters at all, to that afwul 6th inning, to Mota giving up a crushing bomb to Manny, they deserved to lose.
Jake has to learn very quick that he must pitch inside. He lost a ton of confidence from last year, and I can't figure it out. He is good enough to pitch inside, yet he thinks he's not. So, he nibbles on the outside corner and guys just sit on thoe pitches. Or, like last night, they watch them go by and take their walk to first. How he managed to give up 6 walks and 6 hits to that lineup and they only scored 2 runs is beyond me.
Yet another game in which the offense did all they could against a fantastic starting pitcher, and the bullpen blew it. This is gonna be a long season if they don't figure out this bullpen fast.

The Indians played well in this series, but I would hold off on the shit talk until AFTER the allstar break...

I think from now on I'm going to post the exact opposite of what is really happening. I say the Tribe is going great, and they go out and shit the bed for 2 weeks, losing series to the Royals, Mariners, and Orioles. Then, I say they are doing terrible, and they win the series against Boston, and in the process they make Schilling look human, rough up Wakefield, Paul Byrd pitches his heart out, and they beat the hell out of Beckett. What is up with this team?
So... they suck. They can't do anything right. The starting pitching blows and the offense is a joke.
Also, I'm going to ignore stupid people. So, VegasBrock, since you obviously only have 3-4 brain cells in that thick retard head of yours, I will now be ignoring you, as I'm sure everybody else in this thread will be.

keep in mind... last year's april was a 9-14 month. look where we ended up, i believe 93 wins? that's about 20 wins a month. and down to the last game of the season for the playoffs. pitching is spotty, one day they stink, the next day is great. but we're leading the league with 6.5 runs per game. pitching is the only reason we're 13-11 right now, i'm sure it'll get better as the season goes on.

Also keep in mind that the Jndians were playing off their asses in July and August and won like 29 out of 31 (or whatever it was) games during that time and STILL lost the division by 6 games. It's stupid to think it's a good idea to try that shit again this year, because as good as their offense is, they're just not going to go on that kind of tear again - that was some historic shit that definitely shouldn't be expected again.
It just goes to show, you don't want to dig yourself into a hole too early in the year. I personally think they were a better team last year than this year - at least pitching-wise, so if they find themselves 6-10 games back a month from now, don't look for the same type of run they had last year to keep it close...
Just my opinion.

I can agree with that. Much better offense, much worse pitching. Hopefully getting Sabathia back will settle things down.

Sorry, but when a guy takes the money and runs, in the process turning his back on the team that either brought him up from the minors or made him a star, then he deserves to be booed by the fans of the team he left behind. I have no loyalty to Thome whatsoever. He was a greedy fuck, and now he is an opposing player on our main rivals. Why the hell should I cheer for that?
In other news...
Nice win today. I'll take a split against those guys any day. Good to see Sabathia pitch well in his first game back. GREAT to see Hafner tee off on that shitdick Buehrle and get a little revenge for that "accidental" face shot last year. Hopefully, this game can start building some momentum going into the West Coast road trip.

Why the hell should I cheer for that?He left because the Jndians were making it clear they were entering a rebuilding phase and he thought the Phillies had a better chance to win. He said it about 300 times during the signing. The Phils only offered like $10 more over 5 years than Cleveland offered, so I don't think it was all about the money. Cleveland also strung him along and he waited for them to make a final proposal INCLUDING their 5-year plan for winning before he decided they were going to suck shit for the next few years and took off.
Since then, he's only said good things about the Jndians and their fans and still fucking LIVES in Ohio.
Other than that, yeah, he's a real fuckhead...

You guys really are living up to that "Stupid White Sox Fan" stereotype. You know nothing about how the negotiations with Thome went down, so don't try to pretend you do. The fact is, he took the money and ran. He did what every asshole in sports does. They always say it's "about the chance to win", but that is always bullshit, and it's always about the money. I don't support that mindset, and therefore I will boo heartily anytime Manny Ramirez, Jim Thome, Kevin Millwood, and any other sack of shit who left Cleveland comes back here - just as REd Sox fans have the right to boo for Johnny Damon, or A's fans can boo for Giambi, or any other example. This idea that fans should cheer for a player who left the team for greed is asinine. The only guys I clap for are the ones who were traded.

No... it was WAY more complicated than that. They offered him what would have been the largest contract in Indians history, but it was for 5 years, and he wanted 6. The Phillies offered more $ per year, and a 6th year, and the Tribe (wisely - the Phils sure regretted that deal) said "No way, we won't match it".

From ESPN:
"After getting Cleveland to sweeten its five-year, $60 million offer by adding a sixth-year vesting option late last week, Thome mulled over the teams' offers during a Thanksgiving weekend at his house in Aurora, Ohio."
So he WAS offered the 6th year and STILL turned them down. Obviously when a player says they're leaving for "a better opportunity" and take some ridiculous contract (like AROD), it's usually bullshit - but Cleveland's offer and the Phillies' offer weren't that far from each other, Cricket.
By all accounts, Thome is a good guy and more importantly, a guy who likes to win - so he left a team that was rebuilding for a team that, on paper, looked ready for the playoffs.
It's really easy to say "you're not an Indians fan so you don't know what you're talking about," but this isn't fucking 1908. People can get information anywhere these days. It's incredible! :icon_surp

It's also amazing how even with all that information, some people don't get basic reading comprehension. You proved my point about the 5 years offered by the Indians. Do you know what a VESTING OPTION is? It means that he was guaranteed 5 years, with an OPTION FOR A 6TH!! Pay attention here, you might learn something. To further the fact that I am right, I took your advice and looked for some information, which I notice that you conveniently ignored, as this came from the same article you quoted, 2 paragraphs up from where you found your info:
"The guarantee is $85 million, which breaks down to $82 million for six years, plus either a $3 million buyout or a vesting $12-million option for the seventh year."
So, let's see - Cleveland offered 5 years, $60 Million guaranteed, with an option for a 6th year. Philly offered 6 years, $82 Million guaranteed, with an option for a 7th year. Hmmmm.... how was I wrong???
Yes, I do know more because I'm a Cleveland fan. I read the papers and watched the news almost every day as that went on, and especially after he left, so I got to hear every single minor detail about the whole thing. Did you? Somehow, I don't think so.

Bottom line, Cleveland is a shithole. No one wants to be there that doesn't have to be which is why they all leave. Way it goes, Cricket. I'm sure you'll boo LeBron when he leaves, too.
And yet, somehow Thome has managed to stay living in Ohio and calling it his home in the offseason - praising his old organization and even mentioning returning if he had the chance in the future. Meanwhile "informed" fuckhead Jndians fans like you boo one of the best players ever to wear a clownshit Cleveland uniform. That's OK - as Guillen said, we'll give him a standing O in Chicago.
Shitheads who turn their back on an organization and talk shit about the team and the fans the second they walk out deserve to get booed. This isn't 1925, where players stay with the same team their entire career. Teams decide they don't want to pay or have someone else for the job and players decide they'd rather live/play somewhere else, or have a chance to win, or make more money. That's the business. It's the players who shit on their old team the second they leave who deserve the boos. And as a Sox fan, I know all about that.
