Well, not to stir the pot, but I was reading MSN's homepage this AM and there is a headline that talks about how the big war on Satellite is between Hoo Hoo and Oprah. Here is the response I fired off. Feel free to reach out and tickle this assholes bag and let him know too.
Mr. Walberg,
It mystifies me why you guys ignore Opie and Anthony. They are a HUGE part of XM. Don’t make the same mistake NBC did years ago by trying to marginalize Howard. They are a force and you cannot ignore them away.
They have many, many more listeners than Howard has. That is an empirical fact. Not to mention they built their audience with no safety net; in other words they did not have a terrestrial radio platform to promote their move to satellite for a year.
While Oprah is a coup to be sure and an indication of the good business practices that will put XM in the driver’s seat in the future, she is not even close to the end all, be all.
Get smart and don’t ostracize the boys or it will be at your own peril. They are 10x more vindictive than Stern ever was and they will never forgive you.
I am a 40 year old business professional with a college degree and your article highly insulted me and buttresses my belief that NBC continues to not do their research. If you cant get something so right in front of your face, how am I to depend on you for the subtleties that today’s news demands?
I just hope the pests don’t take offence to this article. That would be what the boys call a ‘sucks to be you’ moment.
Yours truly,
Chris XXXXXXXXXX

I hear you about 'the boys', but it was before I even took a piss this AM and I have been calling them that for a very long time. Force of habit.
As far as warning the media about the boys being vindictive, not only is it true, but I felt they needed fair warning.
At any rate, the fact remains, they continue to get dissed no matter how I worded a letter. And it wont matter what the numbers are in March. Until they feel the general public they will continue to ignore them, and when they do come around it is my hope the boys dont forget.

As much as I wish O&A received more recognition for their show, I think all of us are being unrealistic about this. Oprah and Stern are iconic cultural characters - whether it is deserved or not - and they are the marquis personalities on XM and Sirius, respectively.
I constantly try to "spread the virus" to my friends and coworkers, but, to be honest, only about 4 of 10 have actually heard of them before. Others are familiar aafter I explain the "Sex For Sam" thing, but there is a truth resides somewhere in this point. Everyone has heard of Stern and Oprah; from a pure marketing standpoint it's a smart move by both companies to ride the wave of their popularity.
I think O&A have a better show (more original content), but if they want to rise to the level of Stern - which may be impossible for any radio personality - they are going to need to make themselves for marketable before XM will fully commit to marketing them.

Everybody is going to have to work a little harder!!
NEW YORK (Reuters) - XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. (XMSR.O: Quote, Profile, Research) on Thursday posted a wider fourth-quarter loss, hurt by higher programing and marketing costs even as revenue more than doubled.
In addition, XM said that a company director, Pierce Roberts, has resigned from the board because he saw "a significant chance of a crisis on the horizon" and was "troubled" about XM's direction.
XM disclosed Roberts' resignation in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, and said Roberts favored cutting spending to boost cash flow.
Shares of XM, which has almost twice as many subscribers as smaller rival Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. (SIRI.O: Quote, Profile, Research), fell 7.7 percent to $23.30 in premarket trade on the Inet electronic network.
XM, which last week signed Oprah Winfrey to program her own channel for XM Satellite Radio under a three-year, $55 million deal, said its cost of attracting additional subscribers rose by 39 percent in the fourth quarter. Revenue more than doubled and topped Wall Street expectations.
The Washington-based company posted a quarterly loss of $268.3 million, or $1.22 a share, compared with a loss of $188.2 million, or 93 cents per share, a year earlier.
Analyst had expected a loss of 92 cents a share, according to Reuters Estimates.
Revenue rose to $177.1 million, from $83.1 million. Wall Street, on average, had expected revenue of $174 million.
XM Satellite said it added over 898,000 subscribers in the quarter and now has more than 6 million, and is on track to reach 20 million by 2010.
Both XM and Sirius are growing rapidly in a nascent market, but losing money as they spend heavily on technology and entertainment such as celebrity hosts to win new subscribers. The companies aim to attract long-term users who will pay a monthly fee for years to come.
XM's signing of Oprah came on the heels of Sirius's January launch of a new show by raunchy radio jock Howard Stern under a five-year deal that will pay Stern about $500 million.
XM said its subscriber acquisition cost rose to $89 in the quarter, compared with $64 one year ago.
"These increases were primarily due to higher marketing expenses to meet a one-time competitive event in the fourth quarter," XM Chief Executive Hugh Panero said in a statement.
Panero did not mention Howard Stern directly, but analysts had anticipated that XM would have to work hard to match Sirius' marketing push leading up to Stern's January debut.
He said XM expects a more routine market environment in the first quarter, now that the run-up to Stern's launch has ended, and projected subscriber acquisition costs will decrease in 2006. Overall, the company sees subscription revenue of $860 million for the full year, up from $503 million in 2005.
XM shares have fallen 19 percent since it reported third-quarter results in October. Over the same period Sirius shares are nearly flat.
Sirius is expected to report its quarterly results on Friday

As far as the article...

I hate to say it but the big name war is between Oprah and Howard... Their names are just bigger than the boys. If O&A left XM right now I dont think anything would be said, but if Howard or Oprah left of course a stink would be made....
But that doesnt mean the shows are any better.... Its all just name recognition...

I think it's fair for an article to say the "big fight" is Howard Stern vs Oprah..
Both are the biggest names on each company, as far as the average person is concerned. If you don't live in the east coast, chances are, you barely know who O&A are.. Oprah may be the best kown celebrity in the country.
It's about name recognition, not quality of the show.. I can think of tons of bands who I think are better than U2.. but I'm not going to argue that they're not absolutely huge.

It's very hard when arguing for the boys on other message boards when someone says: "well XM doesn't even market them - they can't be good." Then, that huge press release comes out, and OnA aren't mentioned, and it's tough not to argue that OnA are major league.

From a business standpoint this should be fun to watch. It will be interesting to see the doggy company’s numbers tomorrow. How much did they spend on each new customer? Will they try and pass a $1 price increase? Dish and Direct TV both exist and the doggy and XM are both going to exist.
Satellite radio in the news is a good thing for both companies, even if a board member gets pissy. It is good to see XM differentiating themselves from the doggy company, from a business perspective. The marketer in me worries about using one controversial person to define your image in a consumers mind. What happens when that person leaves, gets in trouble, gets hit by a car, etc....
What the industry needs is people looking to buy Satellite radios, Oprah should bring in a whole new consumer, that has to be good for XM. The stock took a beating today, but I look at it as an opportunity to buy some more shares.

how will it come back to bite O&A in the ass? O&A talking about Howard is not such a big deal as Howard talking about O&A. everyone knows Howard, they already know what he's about, so O&A losing listeners and XM losing subs to Howard and Sirius is a lot less likely than the other way around. since fewer people know about O&A, the likelihood that people will give O&A a try is much higher.
if anything, O&A talking about other shows displays the confidence in their own show and fans. they know they have a great, entertaining show and know their fans won't turn over to another show simply because they mention the show on the air. Howard's reluctance to so much as mention O&A on the air is proof positive of Howard's fear of losing his audience and his lack of confidence in his own show and fans. it shows that O&A have more balls and don't fear their competitors.

You are correct sir. Besides, trying to pass off men in their mid 40's as young enough to be called "boys" doesn't ring true. They are almost as old as Stern.
Anyways hopefully this will all stop when the March numbers show they have more or equal numbers to Stern.
That's not going to happen any time soon. Stern has between 1-2 million listeners, and clearly O&A aren't anywhere near that. If they were, the news reports wouldn't be saying its Stern vs. Oprah, they would be saying Stern vs. O&A.
BTW, there will be no "March numbers" for the number of Stern vs. the number O&A listeners. Until Arbitron starts rating individual satellite radio stations this summer, the only numbers we have to go by are the estimates from Bridge Ratings who have estimated the number of subscribers due to Stern to be in excess of 1 million for the last 4 months alone. Bridge Ratings has yet to make note of any impact that Opie and Anthony have made as far as drawing listeners to XM.

Ultimately, its your ass that would be held responsible, and could bring a lot of unnecessary heat to the board. Last I checked, it was early and I haven't had my coffee yet isn't a valid defense...
You can't get pissed when people disagree with some of what you said when you come in here, start a thread, and say "look what I did"...
Honesty is what makes the show great, why shouldn't it apply here as well???
Anxiously waiting to see yours....

XM is NOT helping us to spread the Virus!!!!!
XM is spending a shit load of money trying to spread XM! They're still in the red.. not as bad a Sirius - but they're losing money, not making any. Give the company a break.

As much as I wish O&A received more recognition for their show, I think all of us are being unrealistic about this. Oprah and Stern are iconic cultural characters - whether it is deserved or not - and they are the marquis personalities on XM and Sirius, respectively.
Maybe, but it is undoubtedly annoying how much O&A get dismissed.

And one cannot get in any kind of guff for how someone pecieves something. Implying and saying are two vastly different things. I know that saying someone or something is vindictive is a thousand yards from an actual threat.
I was less saying hey look what I did and more saying we should alert this guy that there is more to xm than oprah.
I only posted the letter ( I wish to god I had not) because I wanted to prove that I actually did something instead of just talking about it, like so many do. Blah, blah, blah. Get outside Mr. 2000 posts. The sun feels good.

Holy Crap.. Too many big words for those assholes to understand.. I couldnt get past It
Very Good Sir

Maybe more people woud be more receptive and more welcoming to Opie and Anthony if we didn't take every snub as an act of war. But hey... This approach really does wonders for Muslims....

And you WON'T, because I don't need to validate myself to you or anyone else here...
I pay my XM bill and recommend XM to my friends. Word of mouth is stronger than any marketing BS...
But, I know... you "GET IT" and I "DON'T".
And one cannot get in any kind of guff for how someone pecieves something. Implying and saying are two vastly different things. I know that saying someone or something is vindictive is a thousand yards from an actual threat.
Someone else pointed out the same friggin thing, but I must have been wrong. Here's a little nugget for you, perception is reality, but if you want people to perceive you as the knuckle dragging dolt that they already think you are because you listen to O&A then by all means have at it...

I think that o&a are the least of XM's concerns right now.
Like Opie himself said, there is so much more on XM than o&a.
i can understand the sentiment, but o&a and their fans do a damn good job of self-promotion.

A little more of this before I tire of playing with you and go out DO SOMETHING.
Perception is reality is the silliest little trite coloquialism you can come up with? Lauff and lauff. Tell it to the judge, you would be laughed out of court, which was where you suggested my post could land me. Talk about reality. And lets, peception would only be reality to someone whose life depends on staring at a screen all day in a made up world where your silly opinion actually matters.
As far your word of mouth to your friends being more important than actual marketing, I am sure the boys are clammoring to get your silly ass on the payroll,,,is that the phone ringing? Oh thats right, they dont know you exist. Ouch.
Again all I did was reach out to an actual writer to give my opinion as poorly worded as it may have been. Knuckle Dragger? I'll take my callused hands to your carpal tunnel any day son. At the end of the day you are stuck in cyber-space, oh and your word of mouth campaign, and I actually did something.
And validating, who asked you? Speaking of validating, you came at me, remember?
Lastly, mods aside who do a great job and I respect fully, yeah some folks do post way too much and I would say the same I said to you...Get outside. But they did not come at me. You did. I am not impressed with your up to minute sig changes, myspace prowess, and wonderful photoshop ability. You are not battling with a member of the x-box generation. You are talking with a real man, one who is finished toying with you.
You dont like my post sorry, but at least I tried. Maybe take some of your passive-aggresive anger out somewhere it might help the boys instead of heading up your stellar word of mouth campaign. Word of mouth, brother.
To all other wackbaggers who I offended I again apologize for my poorly worded letter. In retrospect I should have been more professional. I hope I did not offend too many of you, I was just trying to put in my .02. In the future I will certainly be more circumspect. I have written to congressmen, church leaders, radio stations, and others in the past regarding the boys and other important issues. I will continue to do so and urge all of you to do the same. The written word, no matter how poorly composed is one of our most powerful weapons. Thanks for your time and I also apologize for the downward spiral of a thread that I only started to alert the rest of you to a fucked up article that agian demonstrated the mainstream media just not getting it.

I agree that Xm doesn't promote O & A enough. While really big with thier fans they are only a small part of XM.
Unless you live in the Northeast most people have never heard of them. XM knows this and isn't going to spend money to promote someone people have never heard of.
55 millon bucks for Oprah is a lot of money for a name. And that's all it is. She's not going to sit down in front of a mic and do a show every day. They might get a pre-recorded 30 minutes to an hour a week if that. But the name alone made big headlines and it was good for XM. It's also a name that everyone knows. Just like Stern at the doggie company.
I love O & A but the humor they do but it doesn't appeal to everyone. If they want big exposure they are going to have to be more main stream which would ruin the show. I know that sucks but it's just the way it is.
Sending threats to people doesn't help the show . All it does is show what a bunch of fuckin' idots they have as fans.
The show will continue to grow but it won't be because XM promotes them. It'll be because people sign up for XM, listen to the show and like what they hear.

Whos the one being passive aggressive here??? Jesus, this is like arguing with a second grader... I have a life, i got blah, blah, blah...
I never said I "didn't like the post" or the letter, my 1st post consisted of AN ENTIRE SENTENCE about your prescious letter, backing up what another poster thought about your letter. Then talked about tried to point out what was really the issue of the article. THE FACT THAT XM'S LOSSES WIDENDED... Your a "business professional", you should know that's not good. Especially in a young company such as XM. Wall Street DOESN'T CARE about O&A, but you really told the writer.
Your right, I'm not paid to market XM, but I know that 5 of my friends added XM, and since "every subscription counts" i'll take it as a complement. How many subs will the letter create???
To be fair... you started in on me, using my term "death threatish", which admittadly I could have worded it better, but please forgive me it was early and I hadn't had my coffee, then you go on with the with the angry typing guy B.S. Then you say that I'm being passive agressive... EL OH EL...
There was one part (2 lines actually) that I thought that could have been handled differently. Here's what your missing ITS AN OPINION... ass
Have fun in the real world, maaaaaaannnnnnn!!!!!111!!!:icon_roll

Boys Boys Boys...calm down...The exec who left still is holding onto a lot of XM stock. If he thought there was a real "looming crisis" then he would have sold ASAP. He was probably taken for granted, had too many ideas shot down in the boardroom and felt that his effort would be more appreciated elsewhere.
The biggest thing is the stock he still holds. If he thought there were serious problems ahead would he still be holding onto his stock? I think not...

Your probably right, and it was nothing more than a philosophical differnce that caused him to leave...
Since he was a board member is a considered an "insider" according to SEC regulations. That designation prevents him from flushing his entire position and flooding the market all at once if the position is large enough, but it's something that warrants keeping an eye an eye on.

I'll disagree with this, with respect. Certainly, overall, that's a correct statement, but I think the other areas of the country have heard of O&A. I know I listened to them in New Orleans before XM.
My point is that XM continually seems to severly underestimate the fan base that the boys have.

While that may be true, this is an old thread that really isn't relevant anymore.
Please don't bump threads that are this old. If you feel you have something
relevant to it, it's fine to start a new one. Thanx.
