any one think the mets are going to make another big move (I.E. Zito) prior to the season begining?

A family of New York Yankee fans heads out one Saturday to shop for the youngest boy's birthday.

While in the sports shop, the son picks up a Mets jersey and says to his older sister, "I've decided to become a Mets fan and I would like this NY Mets jersey for my birthday."

His big sister is outraged by this and promptly whacks him upside his head and says, "Go talk to mother!"

Off goes the little lad with the jersey in hand and finds his mother. "Mom?"

"Yes, son?"

"I've decided I'm going to be a Mets fan and I would like this jersey for my birthday."

The mother is outraged at this, promptly whacks him around the head and says, "Go talk to your father!"

Off he goes with the Mets jersey in hand and finds his father. "Dad?"

"Yes, son?"

"I've decided I'm going to be a Mets fan and I would like this jersey for my birthday."

The father is outraged and promptly whacks his son in the back of his head and says, "No son of mine is ever going to be seen in THAT!"

About half an hour later they're all back in the car and heading
towards home. The father turns to his son and says "Son, I hope you've learned something today."

The son says, "Yes, Dad, I have."

"Good, son, what is it?"

The son replies, "I've only been a Mets fan for an hour, and I already hate you Yankee bastards."

2/20 UPDATE

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Another day, another long-toss.
Mets ace right-hander Pedro Martinez moved closer to climbing a mound on Monday, working out in the outfield at Tradition Field in regular baseball shoes, his now-famous right Nike cleat in for modifications.

"It's getting there," Martinez said. "It's getting more comfortable each time."

It was a scene very similar to the one on Saturday, when Martinez traded throws with manager Willie Randolph across the outfield of a back field.

This time, Randolph was an observer, consulting with a group of interested onlookers that included pitching coach Rick Peterson, bullpen coach Guy Conti, Triple-A pitching coach Randy Niemann and trainer Ray Ramirez.

Martinez's session lasted about 10 minutes, backing up nearly to the warning track in center field while exchanging tosses with bullpen catcher Dave Racaniello, who was perched near the left-field foul line.

"I'm trying to act normal and see how it's going to respond, and hopefully make the adjustments," said Martinez, who noticeably increased velocity as he concluded the session.

The Mets are still working on changes to Martinez's cleat, with tweaks ordered to the front spikes following Martinez's feedback on Saturday. The pitcher threw on Monday using a regular shoe with a silicone pad guarding the right side, which Martinez said was "not quite as comfortable" for his injured big toe.

Martinez said the next step will be testing his footwork on an actual mound, which could happen this week. He would start at the bottom of the hill and gradually move up to the rubber.

"Probably by the weekend, I'll try to get on the slope of the mound and start working," Martinez said.

This spring, Martinez has been able to throw only off of flat ground, patiently nursing an ailment that cut short his 2005 season by two starts last September. With Mets pitchers already deep into fielding drills, Martinez has been absent, conducting his workouts indoors by lifting weights and riding a stationary bicycle.

"He's getting his work in and doing his cardio and hitting the weight room pretty hard," Randolph said. "That'll all play out pretty soon."

"I have plenty of time to do [fielding drills]," Martinez said. "[After] 15 years, I learned some of those things."

A brief hello: Kaz Matsui stopped by Tradition Field on Monday, but heleft almost as quickly as he arrived.

Wearing facial hair that will almost certainly disappear before Tuesday's scheduled report date for the rest of the club, Matsui unloaded his belongings from a silver Mazda coupe into his locker, pausing only to tell reporters in Japanese, "Everything is good so far."

When he entered the clubhouse, Matsui would have discovered his locker has been moved from its corner location last spring. Matsui's old locker is now reserved for veteran Bret Boone, one of Matsui's challengers at second base this spring.

Wright takes in Daytona 500: Few people in the Mets' immediate family are so conspicuous by their absence as David Wright. Something close to a sense of alarm develops when he isn't at his locker, in the cage or at third base taking ground balls.

So it was Sunday when the Mets worked out without the player who quickly is becoming the face of the team. Cliff Floyd wasn't there either -- neither was supposed to be -- but had he been, he certainly would have noticed Wright's absence. Like the Stones without Mick Jagger, M*A*S*H without Hawkeye, the Yankees without Derek Jeter.

"Where's that Dee-Rite?" Floyd would have asked with artificial annoyance.

The answer Sunday was Daytona, Fla., specifically the Daytona 500. Wright, hardly a racing aficionado, and a buddy made the trip to witness the phenomenon of NASCAR, to be amazed by the sound, speed and precision of the competition.

"To me, it was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see something like that," Wright said Monday when he returned to camp, when he was conspicuous by his presence.

"I bought the tickets in December. I saw the date and the date of when I had to report [to camp]. So I could go. ... It was amazing. You don't get the whole experience on television. They're going 220 miles per hour on a 2 1/2-mile track. They change tires and gas it up in 12 seconds. It's amazing.

"The track is barely wide enough for four cars and they have three across, going 220 miles per hour. ... It's banked, the bank is like three stories high. I didn't realize that. And it was so foggy you couldn't see the other side."

His appreciation continued to gush. But, evidently, it will remain appreciation and never morph into participation. Wright still prefers his sport to all others. And he considers a car a means of transportation not a means of excitement. He drives an SUV.

And he didn't even drive the two hours to Daytona. "Got a car service," he said.

Wagner doesn't miss Philly fans: The infamous Philadelphia boo birds left a lasting impression on Billy Wagner, the Phillies closer for two years before signing with the Mets. "They'd boo me if my first warm pitch wasn't a hundred miles an hour," Wagner said Monday within earshot of Steve Trachsel.

Said Trachsel: "That's why I've always held back and kept it in the low 90s."

Recalling Wilson's strength: Part of the Mets' daily training regimen involves the use of yellow rubber medicine balls that can be more than a tad unwieldy. In moments of rest, players toss them around as if they basketballs but quickly learn they are more like anvils. Some even try dribbling.

None, however, can do with one of these 6.6-pound balls what Preston Wilson did so easily eight years ago when he was in camp. He not only dribbled, he stopped his dribble with one hand -- palm down -- and walked carrying the ball as if it were made of Styrofoam.

Dennis Cook, in his first Mets camp, was stunned. "I'm from Texas," he said. "And that kid is Texas strong."

Said Al Leiter: "I always heard Gil Hodges had the strongest hands in baseball -- him or Hondo [Frank Howard], Could they have been any stronger than Preston's?"

No current Met has come close to palming the ball. But Mike Pelfrey, the 6-foot-7 pitcher the Mets selected in the first round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, seems like the best bet. He's quite big.

Option 1

1. Reyes S
2. Lo Duca R
3. Beltran S
4. Delgado L
5. Floyd L
6. Wright R
7. Diaz/ Nady/ Chaves
8. Matsui/ Anderson/ Boone

Option 2

1. Reyes S
2. Lo Duca R
3. Beltran S
4. Delgado L
5. Wright R
6. Floyd L
7. Diaz/ Nady/ Chaves
8. Matsui/ Anderson/ Boone

Option 3

1. Reyes S
2. Beltran S
3. Wright R
4. Delgado L
5. Floyd L
6. Lo Duca R
7. Diaz/ Nady/ Chaves
8. Matsui/ Anderson/ Boone

Heres an option if Anderson plays 2nd.

1. Reyes S
2. Anderson
3. Beltran S
4. Delgado L
5. Wright R
6. Floyd L
7. Lo Duca R
8. Diaz/ Nady/ Chaves

The only 2 spots that are set is Reyes leading off and Delgado batting clean up. Everything else is still up in the air.

Anderson? who's Anderson?

if your are saying Marlon, he left as a FA to sign with the Nationals..

it might be the rookie Hernandez you might be thinking of...

i like the lineups with Beltran hitting second.. that's where he should be, & has been very productive both with the Royals & the brief stint as an Astro as a #2..

Cablevision is still working out the deal with SNY but from all I read on Metsblog.com it sounds like it will work out better for the mets then it worked for the yankees when they started YES. There is one cable company some where in Jersey that says that they will not carry SNY. Patriot Media, is the local cable company for about 80,000 customers in central New Jersey

if you live in that area and want to get SNY heres a Petition

From metsblog.com

Citing “people familiar with the negotiations,” Bloomberg.com reports that Cablevision and SportsNet NY have reached an agreement that ensures that the company's three million subscribers will be able to watch Mets games this season…

…good news…

“We fully expect to carry Mets games this season and beyond,” Cablevision spokesman Jim Maiella told Bloomberg in a telephone interview. However, Maiella declined to say whether an agreement had actually been reached…

…for what it’s worth, the newsworthiness here is that while SNY has been talking positively about these negotiations for weeks, Cablevision has not…this quote from maiella is an example of things heading in the right direction…

…again, as a Cablevision subscriber, i will be happy when i see an actual statement from cablevision, and i will totally satisfied when i see SNY on my television…

That's really not such a bad deal. They moved a malcontent, got a closer, who I'm sure they'll make into a set-up man.

Nah, he saved the Mets time. If he had spent the whole Spring playing for a starting role, taking up Randolph's time and attention, and ultimately didn't get the job only to just retire, then...THAT would be a waste of time.

That is true but I am just pissed he came to camp it the first place. But it is great it happened now. I think Kaz will be the opening day 2nd baseman but I think the job will go to Anderson Hernandez by I am guessing right after the all-start break (no later then late july) unless some how Kaz Matsui steps up and becomes the player the mets are paying him to be.

Then you might as well send the new kid a card congratulating him on his new job. Is he a good prospect? Cause if he is, the Mets have a crazy infield for the future. Wright, Reyes and him would be nasty. If Reyes can ever stay healthy.

If someone else in the West can take out the Angels, the AL will come down to Yanks/Sox again and neither one of them have great pitching.

But the AL didn't come down to the Yanks/Sox last year, it was Chicago and Anaheim.

I wouldn't count the A's, White Sox, Blue Jays...I don't think the Yanks have a shot this year.

Also, keep in mind that Toronto will be taking away a lot of W's from the AL East--The Wild Card will be from the West or Central.

Because the Angels own us. That's why I said if someone else can knock off the Angels. Also, this is assuming every team stays healthy, which is a ridiculous large assumption.

Yeah, but the only teams who have a shot at the Wild Card from the West and Central are Chicago and Cleveland in the Central and Texas and LA/Anaheim/California, I dont think the A's will do anything special, they'll win 82 games and miss the playoffs. You have a good point about the Jays taking wins away from the Yanks and Sox, but I still think when it comes down to games a team needs, the Yanks and the Red Sox have a huge advantage.

Im hoping they pick another pitcher up by the start of the season. Im a little worried about the rotation and hoping that glavin doesnt have the problems starting out like last year. Bringing Zito in will be one of the best things they can do, hes a quality fairly young lefty who can also replace glavin when he finally leaves.

You guys do realize who wins or loses in spring training means zero, right? Most of the starters are just working on mechanics, and rookies and guys on the bubble are playing like it is the world series to impress the manager. That is why you see a bunch of nobodies have some crazy ass stats in spring training.

two games today for the mets

the big game of the day was against the Puerto Rico WBC team which aired on ESPN. Mike Pelfrey looked pretty good which I was happy it see. Lastings Milledge also had a great day. A few hard hits and a nice diving catch. Also in this game Wagner give up a two run double to Beltran which broke open the game for team PR who went on to win 6-1. another note on the game Carlos Delgado did not play do to trouble with his left elbow.

and the second game was against the Dodgers

todays game

NY Mets 7, Houston 1

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) -- Steve Trachsel tossed three shutout innings, Kaz Matsui hit a two-run triple and the New York Mets beat the Houston Astros 7-1 on Tuesday.

"Everything about today was better. Fastball was better, location was better and the ball was down in the zone a lot better," said Trachsel, who gave up four runs in one inning in his first spring start.

"It was a vast improvement over five days ago."

Matsui, trying to hold the starting second base job, tripled to center field during a four-run fourth inning as the Mets batted around against Houston reliever Taylor Buchholz.

"He had a nice game. I noticed he had more pep in his step," New York manager Willie Randolph said.

Cliff Floyd and Julio Franco each added an RBI single. New closer Billy Wagner threw a hitless inning with one strikeout.

Notes

Mets ace Pedro Martinez (sore toe) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Wednesday. ... RHP Philip Humber, New York's top draft pick out of Rice in 2004, was sent to the minor league complex along with nine other cuts, including RHP Jason Scobie. ... Mets OF Xavier Nady (sore hamstring), competing with Victor Diaz for playing time in right field, was a late scratch from the lineup and won't travel to Winter Haven for Wednesday's game against Cleveland.

NY Mets 7, Cleveland 1

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (AP) -- Japanese import Yasaku Iriki pitched three impressive innings for New York and Sandy Martinez homered to help the Mets to a 7-1 win over a Cleveland Indians split squad Wednesday.

Paul Byrd (1-1) gave up seven runs and nine hits in 1 2-3 innings, while Guillermo Mota struck out two in one inning in his first outing for Cleveland.

Iriki (1-0), a 33-year-old in his second month in America, said he wasn't satisfied with allowing one run and one hit -- a two-out RBI single by Jhonny Peralta in the third.

"Too many walks," Iriki said through an interpreter after walking three and striking out two.

The right-hander, who pitched eight years in Japan's pro leagues and once was a teammate of Yankees star outfielder Hideki Matsui, signed a one-year contract in January. He said adjusting to a different style of baseball is as difficult as learning American customs.

"I had no feel for my slider," Iriki said. "The baseball here is horsehide and more slippery than the Japanese ball, which is cowskin."

Byrd, signed to a two-year, $14.25 million deal as a free agent in December, didn't have his best stuff, either.

"I had no zip on my fastball, got some pitches up, and when I made a good pitch, they hit those, too," he said. "But the time to worry is if you are hurt. I feel good. I know I'm not going to lead the Grapefruit League in ERA."

After two starts, his ERA is 19.64.

Three rookies keyed the Mets' 15-hit attack. Shortstop Anderson Hernandez went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, second baseman Jeff Keppinger was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI while outfielder Lastings Milledge drove in two runs.

Mota, who missed half of last season with tendinitis in his right shoulder and elbow, threw 24 pitches.

"Everything felt nice and loose," he said. "No pain. It's good."

Travis Hafner played first base for Cleveland and made a nice diving stop of a sharp grounder to his right to get an out in the second inning. That came after he mistakenly cut off a throw from right field.

"My fault, but it was a good refresher course for me to remember not to do that," said Hafner, normally the designated hitter. "I forgot that when nobody yells out anything, you let the throw go. If I let it go, the guy was out."

Notes

Indians rookie RHP Fausto Carmona struck out two over three scoreless innings. ... Indians C Kelly Shoppach went 1-for-2 in trying to throw out speedy Milledge on steal attempts. Shoppach, acquired from Boston in January, threw out 44 percent of potential base-stealers in Triple-A ball in 2005. ... Mets CF Tike Redman made a nice play in the left-center gap to rob OF Jason Cooper of an extra-base hit and end the game.

OandA_Chris

Padilla is a big one if he needs Tom John surgery then hes out for the year which really hurts the bullpen. Zambrano is not believed to be serious. And is expected to pitch for Venezeula on Monday in the WBC. Delgado's elbow is really scaring me the mets were really down playing it when it first came out but it seems worst then what they are saying. He is having it re-examined. Noble reports that Delgado will not play, for the Mets or Puerto Rico, until the pain in his elbow stops. Lets Hope for the best

Former baseball star Dwight Gooden held without bond

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Former baseball star Dwight Gooden was ordered held without bond Wednesday and faces up to five years in prison for violating the terms of his probation.

Gooden will appear in court for a hearing sometime in the next two weeks, prosecutor Pam Bondi said.

The 41-year-old Gooden pleaded guilty in November to speeding away from police after a DUI traffic stop in August 2005 and was sentenced to three years probation. On Tuesday, he went to a regular meeting with a probation officer where he admitted to using cocaine, according to Jo Ellyn Rackleff, a spokeswoman for the Department of Corrections.

"He went to his regular meeting with his probation officer, admitted to the officer that he had used cocaine. She did a drug screen, and he tested positive for cocaine," Rackleff said.

Gooden was then arrested and taken to the Hillsborough County Jail, Rackleff said.

Gooden was voted the 1984 Rookie of the Year and 1985 NL Cy Young Award winner while pitching for the New York Mets. He went 194-112 with a 3.51 ERA before retiring in 2001. He also pitched for the Yankees, Cleveland Indians, Houston Astros and Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

A call to Peter Hobson, who has represented Gooden in the past, was not immediately returned Wednesday.

Wagner's hurt. Not a good sign. but hopefully nothing major.
PORT ST. LUCIE -- If Billy Wagner had experienced any angst, it wasn't readily apparent in his expression or manner. The Mets closer was more bored by the inactivity he faced on Tuesday than he was concerned by the finger injury that had led to it. Wagner said that he's "still pointing to Opening Day," and he later acknowledged that he shouldn't point to anything with the middle finger on his left hand.
The Mets have a digital problem in their bullpen. Wagner's finger is irritated and sore. The diagnosis the Mets made public on Tuesday, following Monday's negative MRI, was "tendon sheath stiffness." Although the club acknowledges that Wagner hurt his finger on Thursday night while pitching against the Braves, the injury's cause remains unspecified. Whatever the injury and/or cause, the Mets are temporarily without their closer less than two weeks before their opener.

Wagner has been "shut down" -- baseball slang for "ordered to remain inactive" -- at least until the weekend and "maybe a week," according to manager Willie Randolph. The Mets are proceeding with caution, because the injury appears to be a recurrence of a problem that Wagner endured to the same finger in Spring Training 2004, when he was a member of the Phillies. The injury is to the same area, about 1 1/2 inches from the fingertip. That year, Wagner missed two weeks of Spring Training -- in early March -- but he was ready for Opening Day.

Wagner, 34, has pitched six innings in six Spring Training appearances thus far. If he returns after the weekend, Wagner would still have six games remaining to resume preparation for his first Mets Opening Day, April 3. Wagner said that his arm is feeling stronger.

"I'm sure if this were the regular season, they could create some kind of concoction to let me throw," Wagner said. "I'm not the least bit concerned. It's definitely not career threatening."

Wagner described his finger as "a little busted," characterizing the injury as "kind of like a bruise" and saying that it's "nothing that won't go away."

Wagner said that his finger seemed stiffer two years ago, when the problem interrupted his camp, adding that "it was like a BB broke off the knuckle." But Wagner felt nothing similar this time. The finger was swollen on Sunday, but the swelling was down by Tuesday morning. Wagner said that his finger felt better.

Mets doctors told Wagner of an injury suffered by former Mets reliever John Franco in July 1999. Though the circumstances sound ominously similar, Wagner was told that his injury is not as serious as Franco's. The Mets can only hope. Franco lost more than two months of his season and his job as a closer -- to Armando Benitez -- when he suffered a partial tear to the sheath of the flexor tendon in his left middle finger while pitching against the Braves.

Wagner, who was to have pitched on Sunday -- he had pitched on Saturday and planned to pitch on successive days -- and again on Wednesday night against the Dodgers. Now, Wagner's next in-game appearance is unscheduled, much the same as that of Mets ace Pedro Martinez. To continue with his conditioning, Wagner expects to wear a weighted wrist cuff on his left arm and simulate his throwing motion on the mound without a ball.

The Mets' acquisition of the left-handed veteran in November was one of two critical offseason moves that were to enhance the team's chance of winning a division title. Carlos Delgado, the other key acquisition, has had an abridged camp because of his participation in the World Baseball Classic and tendinitis in his left elbow, which limited hin to one at-bat in the Classic.

I have never seen Bannister pitch, but his spring performance is terrific. I take spring training stats with a grain of salt, but I do pay attention to pitching stats as I think they are more valuable than batting stats.

If Bannister is for real I'd love to see him and Heilman in the rotation and see them ship Zambrano outta here or make him the long man.

Zambrano and Diaz for Soriano??? Sell Matsui back to Japan!

Here is a rendering of the Mets new ballpark scheduled to open in 2009. Looks a lot like Ameriquest Field (Rangers park) to me, with the grass in center field, the roofd over the top deck, the outside concourse and the seats in right field. If this truly is it I kind of have an indifferent opinion on it. I expected a little better. It's too bad they couldn't come up with some cool unique feature, a la, the green monster. Another thought would be to twist the stadium to the left so it faces La Guardia Airport so you could see the planes land.

Every Braves fan loves it when it distracts the Mets players and they screw up.

The only thing I don't like about the new stadium is the fact that I thought it was an inwritten law that all stadium's be built so that the left hand of the pitcher is facing south. Hence the term, South Paw. So either Shea, the new stadium, or both, are not lined up properly.

Oh, and since the new Stadium over laps Shea slightly, it will have to be fully constructed over the course of one winter. How the fuck will they pull that off?

don't know if this is old news or not, but I did just find this out on my Mets RSS feed, Think this might be a first.

The entire 1986 World Series on DVD.
NEW YORK -- Next week on Opening Day, Jesse Orosco will once again climb the mound at Shea Stadium, peer at catcher Gary Carter, raise his right leg toward his chest and recreate the magical moment when the Mets sealed their second World Series championship.
Some fans won't need to wait that long to get in the '86 spirit.

The magic is back in DVD form this spring, thanks to a new offering from Major League Baseball Productions and A&E Home Video -- "The New York Mets: 1986 World Series Collector's Edition."

A nine-disc box set slated to retail for $89.99, the collection is being released just in time to help fans everywhere celebrate every pitch of every inning of every game of that memorable Fall Classic, culminating with Orosco's strikeout of Boston's Marty Barrett to end Game 7.

"In the 20 years since 1986, I think I've met over 300,000 fans who were at that game," Mookie Wilson laughs now. "But Shea Stadium only holds about 55,000."

Even if you weren't actually present and accounted for in October 1986, now you can revisit those chilly nights at Shea Stadium and Fenway Park.

With more than 29 hours of game footage encompassing the set, fans won't have to settle for simply watching Wilson trickle his ground ball through Bill Buckner's legs -- though they could certainly rewind and replay that famous highlight ad nauseum, if so desired.

They'll also be able to achieve what was once thought impossible -- put the hyperactive Lenny Dykstra into slow-motion (or freeze him altogether).

"Nails" will be there, taking Oil Can Boyd deep, as will both of Carter's Game 4 long balls in Beantown, the improbable 10th-inning rally in Game 6, Darryl Strawberry's home run in Game 7 that removed all doubt, or any other favorite moment from a postseason filled with choice memories.

In addition to all seven games of the World Series, the DVD set also includes the Mets and the Houston Astros facing off in the 16-inning nail-biter in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series -- widely considered one of the greatest MLB playoff games of all time. That epic contest at the Astrodome is chronicled in its entirety.

"The worst, best, most nerve-racking game I was ever involved in," Keith Hernandez says to this day.

Supplementing the eight discs of game footage, "The New York Mets: 1986 World Series Collector's Edition" also includes a bonus disc with rarely-seen celebratory footage, highlights of outstanding performances and interviews with some of the Mets' key contributors during that season.

I just got some tickets the other day for a few games this season. With all that fucking talent, they have to be able to win the division. I don't love their starters, other than Pedro, but they have outstanding position players. I hope they beat the Braves, but Atlanta always finds a way.

WOW! Nice shots, dude! Yesterday was fun, never did anything like that before. I was only expecting a few thousand people to be there but there was about 15,000 in total. Fucken beautiful day, too.

Today's win was a good one. They got lucky on a few calls (Like the LoDuca play at the plate)

Glavine looked good, Wright hit a shot, Nady looked great, and Wagner should prove to be an excellent addition.

I was at the game and it was fucking fun, we played a solid game and like you said some breaks went our way, but that's what happens to good teams :icon_mrgr

Also, Wagner is the differece. Watching him pitch was a relief. Everyone in the stadium knew he was going to get the save.

Man, that play was all Reyes! His relay was blinding fast. All in all awsome game. When Wagner came out the stadium was standing and raocking the entire time. No worries with him, you knew he had. The starting rotation has a closer they can trust and that is all the difference.

Funny thing is, its was the bottom part of the line up that got the runs. Wright produced but it was Nady ( what was he, 3 for 3?) and Glavin (2 for 2? ... I got a buzz on) that really rocked.

I saw some flashes of brilliance ... Glavine's break up of the run down for one, that will make this season interesting.

How is that good tho? You trade away a good pitcher and get shit in return just because someones wife wears a santa outfit to an event? What happens now when Pedro or Glavine goes down with an injury and you need another pitcher? Personally I think thats just an assinine reason to get rid of someone.

And if they didnt like his salary, its their fault for overpaying him and then creating a higher market for someone like Leiber whos departure led to another unknown team overpaying for 2 guys who totally suck ass and spent most of 2005 on the DL (I swear im not bitter tho)

Ab-so-freaking-lutly!! I AM NOT MAKING ANY PREDICTIONS OR PONTIFICATIONS HERE but, for those of us who remember the 86 season, these guys are playing with a similar attitude. They are aggressive and relentless. Hell, I love the fact that the pitchers are willing to go and stay inside. Hit a batter, screw it, let them fear us. Reyes getting on base, Beltran now is getting hits, Delgado crushing the ball, and the bottom half of the line up also moving the ball. It’s awesome!

The first 2 picks could be labled as "heart picks", however, Sundays game was following a trend that was 10-0 and 21-5 over a 2 year period. Trust me, you won't see a Phillies pick on there for a while. You may see an over/under on a Phils game, but there are plenty of other nice plays out there early in the season.

I have been doing this for almost 23 months now, and have made a very nice profit doing it. I have had a total of 4 losing months. My worse month was November 05, I went 11-19.

Yes those have been weak teams but it is important to get off to a good start and the fiorst tough series of the season start on mon the 17th when we play the braves. They always seem to beat us no matter what. They could put 9 empty uniforms out and still find away.

it's hard not to feel excited about the team, especially the way atlanta is floundering in the early going. i have to remind myself there's been about two weeks of baseball and still a lot to play. that said if they can play well against ATL, then i'll really get excited....

No they can't. The Rangers were picked by many people to finish last in all the teams. They are a huge surprise to be in 1st place. With the Mets a lot of people know it's their time to win now.

How fucking amazing was Bannister in the first three? Sure he let a LOT of guys get on, threw a LOT of pitches, but he didn't crumble under the pressure and held them to leave 8 runners on in 3 innings. Amazing for a kid who is only making his 3rd career Major Leuge start.

Now to see what we can do when the Braves are in town. I have to admit, I am a little worried, but for once, I do actually have some confidence in the Mets. The first time in Mets history that they have started the season with four series wins. Things are looking good. Things are looking good.

I got an email from the Mets the other day. They are opening the picnic area up Tuesday. They do this every Wednesday as the Pepsi promotion, but this was to people who subscribe to them online, may be a few less Domincans out there. If you are interested in going, hit me up with a pm, and I will send you the email. You just print as many as you want, the first 1000 get in free.

Speaking of Met tix, you can get some cheap ass seats online using the promotion "mastercard". You get four tickets plus $20 in Mets money for $82. You can get lodge reserved, or upper box. I took the upper box as they where right behind home plate. Lodge box are my favorite seats, but lodge reserve blow. If you sit in the first three rows you have to watch people walk in front of you the entire game. If you sit too high, you can not see diamond vision and you lose fly balls.

Another nice win. Get your asses out there and support this team. I have bought tix to six games alreadyl, and may go to more.

That was my first chance to watch bannester pitch. Even thought the kid got into trouble expecially in the earlier innings, and ran his pitch count up to be astronomical, I think that this kid could be the real deal. He has a nasty drop on his curve. With some controll work and maybe another pitch, this kid could quite possiby be a #1 starter in the future. But untill than hopefully we will ahve to settle for pedro beating down the braves tonight.

Yeah, he really looked great tonight. I was watching with my father and we were amazed at how foolish he made some people look.

Wagner' pitch selection, or Lo Duca call was perfect against Pratt in the final at-bat. I was saying, "Free swinger, throw some low sliders" and by God he did. But, on 0-2 I was saying, "Throw one in the dirt" and he froze him with a fastball on the inside corner. Fucking brilliant!

SO, do you think they will hit 20 wins, or 10 losses first? Meaning, do you tihkn they can win 4 before they lose 2?

I think they can. The next 4 games are against two teams that they should have no problem beating.

Washington is 8-17, and Pittsburgh is 7-19. If it weren't for the fact that Victor Suck-brano is starting tonight, I would expect them to go 4-0 against these teams.

Nice win tonight. Great baserunning from Chavez.

My only problem tonight was with Reyes when he tried to stretch that double into a triple. Had he stayed at 2nd, they wouldn't have needed the bottom of the 9th to win tonight.

And how fucking great is Sanchez? What a great pick-up on the off season. They finally have a good all around bullpen.

And with the win they stay 6 games in front of the Braves and Phillies.

Now they just need to win 3 more games before they lose 2 more.

Shhhhh,

You’re gonna wreck it.

It was a good break, but an earned break I believe. Willie did the right thing and after Franco walked as he put the speedy Chavez in. Reyes lashed the single and with Chavez at second he was able to score on the error where it would have been doubtful that Franco would have scored.

The Mets put themselves into position to get a win, and did just that for a change. For so many years I have watched the breaks turn against the Mets, it now feels good a few are coming back this way.

I also think they will win 20 before losing 10 games, I guess it depends on the roll of the dice tonight by bringing up and throwing Maine,,,we’ll see…

Any new news on Bannister yet? I hope he is ready to pitch soon...we need him.
MRI came back negative
ATLANTA -- Flights from San Francisco to Atlanta are surprisingly short, a mere four hours. (No wonder the Braves once played in the National League West.) The Mets' flight from Frisco to Dixie on Wednesday night was without delay, but not that short for Brian Bannister. He couldn't take it sitting down.
The edge of his seat dug into the back of right leg, grabbed at his hamstring that already was aching. So Bannister was on his feet for 2 1/2 of the four hours required to reach the home of the Braves, a long-standing problem, you might say.

Turns out his other problem, the strained hamstring that forced him from his start against the Giants on Sunday, may not have the legs the Mets feared. The muscle has no torn fibers, Bannister said on Thursday after he had been advised of the results of an MRI administered during the morning. The doctors told him he had a grade 1 strain, the least serious kind.

So now the Mets rookie pitcher has another entry to add to his list of the personal unprecedented. He dealt with his first out, first strikeout and first victory in -- what else? -- his first start. His first hit, double and RBI have followed. And now Bannister has this momento, his first negative MRI. Congratulations are in order.

His short-term prognosis isn't necessarily positive just because his MRI was negative. The Mets have affixed the dreaded "day-to-day" to Bannister, the same hyphenated predicate adjective that they applied to Carlos Beltran two Saturdays ago when his right hamstring balked. And the center fielder has started one game since.

Bannister couldn't venture a guess about his availability for his next starting assignment -- Tuesday night at Shea Stadium against the Nationals. He won't know for a few more days probably. The hamstring still feels cramped, and that put a crimp in his style on Thursday, the Mets' first day off after 16 days on. Bannister spent his free time catching up on sleep -- he got none in his 2 1/2 vertical hours and little in the other 1 1/2 -- and limping around a mall near the team's hotel in Buckhead.

But even that was better than the overnight flight.

"I was in the back of the plane," he said. "The pitchers are always in the back. All I did was talk to guys waiting to use the lavatory."

And all he heard was this pointed advice: "Strikeouts, singles and home runs."

They are relatively safe activities for pitchers, his colleagues told him, not nearly so perilous as running out doubles.

Bannister, described in Spring Training as "a hitter who pitches," contributed two doubles to the Mets' 9-7 victory against the Giants on Wednesday. The first, a well-struck line drive to right against Matt Morris, drove in two runs in the fourth inning and tied the score at three. The second, also against Morris, was a gapper to right-center that, had Jose Reyes been the hitter, would have been good for three bases. Bannister had a thought about third base, but stopped.

He remained at second then and when Reyes flied out, flexed his right leg which had begun to tighten. But when Kaz Matsui doubled down the left-field line, Bannister took off, carrying the Mets' fourth and tying run. His hamstring betrayed him at third base and he limped home, holding his wounded hammy. He was helped from the field.

"Please get there," Willie Randolph remembers thinking as he watched Bannister. "Please get there without doing any more damage."

Bannister likened his experience to what he recalled from the 1992 Olympics when British runner Derek Redmond tore his right hamstring in the 400 meters. He tried to hop to the finish. His father ran from the crowd and by a security guard and escorted his son. Manny Acta, the Mets' third-base coach, didn't have that option. Coaches are prohibited from helping baserunners.

Bannister couldn't measure the extent of his injury.

"I've never had anything like this," he said. "It doesn't seem too bad," he said after his mall time. "If I go too fast or move in the wrong direction, it grabs."

Pitching will require more than that.

It may require an alternate arm. General manager Omar Minaya mentioned Darren Oliver, the veteran starter, on Wednesday as a potential alternate for Bannister. And perhaps that would work if Bannister were to miss one start. If assignment to the disabled list were needed, a more permanent solution would be too.

Neither Minaya nor Randolph gave a moment's thought to using Aaron Heilman to start on Tuesday, preferring not to disrupt the bullpen. But even using Oliver would be a disruption and it probably would put a greater strain on the 'pen on Tuesday since Oliver isn't likely to pitch deep into a start.

Promotion from Triple-A may be needed. Minaya likes John Maine, the pitcher the Mets obtained with Jorge Julio in the Kris Benson deal. Maine, pitching for the Mets' Norfolk Tides affiliate, is on the 40-man roster; fellow Tides Jeremi Gonzalez and Jose Lima are not.

Maine gained his first victory on Wednesday, pitching seven innings and allowing five hits and a walk against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

He has a 1-3 record and 2.63 ERA in four starts. The Tides had scored one run in each loss.

Maine is only a maybe for now. But so is Bannister.

This blown save by Wagner comes down to one pitch! He struck out the guy before with a Slider on a two strike count. Why, why!>?!> Would he throw a fastball on a 2-2 count when he could have thrown that same slider? If he hit with the slider GAME OVER, if he doesn't then he has to throw the fastball. Why not try the slider again? Stupid.

I hope we take this game, right now! I am about wins, but I really wanted to see Pedro go 6-0. Whatever, let's just get this win!

Wagner, who signed a $43 million, four-year contract in the offseason, has three blown saves in 10 chances.

I hate Zambrano as much as everybody else, but him going down right now is not good. For one he had a good start last time, and retired the first 4 Braves today, and most importantly we already have Banister down, now Mayne is hurt. Jose Lima is starting tomorrow. Trachsel is struggling. Even though we are 21-9 and playing great, A backend of the rotation of Trachsel, Lima, and whoever is not great.

But this was a tremendous win to beat the Braves with Hudson, when Zambarano was hurt, and no Wagner, Heilman, or Sanchez out of the bullpen.

Zambrano done for the year

Our rotation is starting to look shakier by the day

Here is the story .....

New York Daily News - http://www.nydailynews.com
Victor injury a Zam shame
BY ADAM RUBIN
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER
Sunday, May 7th, 2006

Victor Zambrano looked into Willie Randolph's eyes and insisted three times that he felt fine, despite the pained expression bench coach Sandy Alomar Sr. spotted from the dugout.

Two pitches later, on a two-strike changeup to Andruw Jones after Zambrano convinced his manager nothing was wrong, the righthander's season ended.

Zambrano has a torn flexor tendon in his right elbow and will require surgery that will sideline him until 2007, agent Peter Greenberg told the Daily News last night after meeting his client at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.

"He's out for the year," said Greenberg, who described the recovery time for this injury as less than the 12 months prescribed for Tommy John surgery. "He's down, obviously. He's been pitching with some pain for a while. Now he knows what it is. The doctor told him the ligament is in good shape, which is good news."

Oft-jeered Kaz Matsui keyed a four-run seventh-inning rally and the Mets survived Jorge Julio's attempt at his first NL save to beat tormentor Tim Hudson and the Braves, 6-5, yesterday at Shea. Yet improving to a major league-best 21-9 with their fourth straight win, and knocking the Braves nine games out of first place for the first time in 13 years, could not rival losing Zambrano.

"His elbow just blew up," said Pedro Martinez, Zambrano's confidant and one of several players aware that he had been concealing discomfort for a while, though GM Omar Minaya, Randolph and coaches maintained they had no hint.

Zambrano put pressure on himself to pitch because a 14-inning game the previous night taxed the bullpen and, Martinez suggested, because of unfair expectations stemming from the Scott Kazmir trade. He ultimately made a beeline for the dugout after striking out Jones with his 23rd pitch.

"When he got to the dugout, I could see him holding his arm," Floyd said. "I just wish he would've said something."

Zambrano had been backed off starts by the Devil Rays in the weeks preceding the controversial July 30, 2004, trade. He then made only three starts for the Mets that season because of what was labeled a strained flexor muscle in the elbow. Jim Duquette, the Mets' GM at the time, later accused Tampa Bay brass of deception regarding Zambrano's elbow, saying: "There has to be an openness and a candidness between doctors, and they weren't straightforward with us." Perversely, it was a fear of a potential elbow injury to Kazmir, which has yet to materialize, that in part fueled the deal from the Mets' perspective. Greenberg said Zambrano was aware of bone chips in the elbow and that doctors who reviewed the MRI last night suggested the tendon would have needed the surgery regardless.

With the Mets having played extra innings Friday, and with Jose Lima already on tap today because of injuries to Brian Bannister (hamstring strain) and substitute John Maine (finger inflammation), Zambrano's early departure couldn't have been more inopportune, though Darren Oliver was prepared because he also knew about Zambrano's discomfort.

The Mets are set for the midweek Phillies series with Martinez, Tom Glavine and Steve Trachsel, but Friday and Saturday starts are now open. Presumably Lima would take one. Oliver is an option for the other. The organization's depth had been lacking even before the injuries because of the Kris Benson and Jae Seo trades. The other internal choices include Jeremi Gonzalez (3.03 ERA) from Triple-A Norfolk and granting Aaron Heilman's preseason wish to be in the rotation. Or, the Mets could succumb to temptation and promote 2005 first-round pick Mike Pelfrey from Double-A Binghamton. Minaya said he'd leave all options open. With Zambrano confirmed out for the season, it's certain the Mets will scour the trade market.

Oliver, cut from the Opening Day roster until a last-minute reversal partly because Zambrano strained a hamstring, contributed four solid relief innings yesterday. Jeff Francoeur, the second batter Oliver faced, pulled the Braves even at 1 with a homer. The Mets regained a one-run lead an inning later on Carlos Beltran's solo homer. Oliver didn't surrender another hit until the sixth. Chipper Jones made it 2-2 that inning with a run-scoring bloop single that chased him.

The Mets fell behind 3-2 when Bartolome Fortunato surrendered a seventh-inning homer to Adam LaRoche. But the Mets got to Hudson in the bottom half, with Jose Reyes delivering an RBI single and Matsui contributing a tiebreaking two-run double. Floyd drew a bases-loaded walk after the Mets got into the bullpen.

Julio, given the nod with a 6-4 lead to start the ninth because Randolph didn't want to use Wagner after a two-inning assignment the previous night, allowed a run but escaped with the tying run at third on a broken-bat groundout by Edgar Renteria.

In the postgame conference, Randolph said that the ball slipped out of Lo Duca's hand. He didn't spike it. Yeah ok Willie.

I think he feels great about trading Seo. Seo has struggled in LA, and Sanchez has been brilliant here. Tonight not withstanding.

Benson on the other hand. and Kazmir. Not a subject Met fans would like to talk about.

Personally, I would have kept Seo and signed a Farnsworth, Tavarez, or even kept Looper since he's not bad when not a closer.

Anna's dress at the christmas party didn't help, but he could have done a LOT better than Julio.

And trading a decent white pitcher for a horrible hispanic one doesn't help the whispers about Omar playing favorites.

Since when did Jae Seo become Cy Young. The guy was an Ok pitcher at best. The Mets are way better off with a very good setup man in Sanchez than a #4 starter in Seo.

Lets also keep in mind in the Bottom of the 8th. THe Mets had a man on 3rd and 1 out, and Delgado didn't get him in. and then Wright was intentionally walked, and Floyd grounded out. That was an easy run and you can never score too many runs against the Yankees.

I also said before the 9th that I wanted Sanchez instead of Wagner. Not because I ever in my wildest imagination would expect Wagner to blow a 4 run lead. But because by pitching him in a non save situation here, you may lose him for Sunday Night when you might really need him.

Everything worked out disastrous for the Mets, and Wagner better be able to deal with the boos, because I have a funny feeling the next time "Enter Sandman" starts playing at Shea, he's not going to like what he hears from the crowd.

I agree, the '86 team was a monster, and they're not quite there yet.
But they could be.

Basically, I meant the attitude is back.
They play like they expect to win this year, and that's something this team's been lacking for too long.

Do they have enough to win it all this year? Maybe. Why not.

A little tweaking here and there, and let Floyd get hot too [which seems like he's getting closer], and you never know.
You get the feeling that they still haven't peaked as a team yet. So when that does happen, look out...

Oh, I completely agree with the attitude, major improvement there. How many bottom of the 9th wins have we had that have you jumping out of your seat this year? Your Wright quote is right on the $$$.

I can’t tell you how many years it’s been where just around this time of the season, maybe going out to early July I just wanted a .500+ team. Now, with just a couple of exceptions, we've take every series.

I guess what I looking for are sweeps, especially of the Yankees in their house!

I think its time to look elsewhere for a second baseman. If Kaz continues to hit .240 then we might as well call up A-Hern and let him develop. I'd rather have a rookie learn the position and learn to hit in the majors (even if the avg isn't any better than Kaz). I know the Mets are trying to get there moneys worth out of Kaz, but still I think its time to move on. The only good thing about kaz is the defense he has played, but I'm sure A-Hern could give you the smae kind of defense.

Milledge promoted per WFAN.
Yup.

From
http://www.metsblog.com/

-------------------------------------

Mets OF Xavier Nady was forced to have emergency appendectomy surgery and will be out for roughly four weeks… As such, the Mets have promoted…

OF Lastings Milledge…
…the buzz from shea is that milledge may not be at the stadium tonight…however, if he is, or whenever he arrives, he will be the team’s starting right fielder…

…the team will not call up milledge, and then sit him…so, like with DavidWright in 2004, and JoseReyes in 2003, milledge will be told he has a month to play in the bigs, and will return to triple-a when nady returns, i am sure…this way there is less pressure…however, this kid, like reyes and wright, knows what’s up, and will look to take the job from nady…if he does well, i suspect nady will become a fourth outfielder…if milledge struggles, he’ll go back to norfolk, and nady will get the job back, no harm no foul…

-------------------------------------

ooooof. That stinks for Nady. But who knows, this could turn out for the better in the long run.
And we finally get to see what this kid can do.

Had a blast. Got there early for BP and got a ball within five minutes for Chelsea, her 14th. birthday is tommorow. Pedro Felliciano even signed it for her. Then, during D-Backs BP got another ball and gave it to my 6 year old niece, who was attending her first major league game. Pedro pitched great, and got bonus baseball as it goes 13 (that is two weeks in a row I go to a game and it just keeps on going). Getting a win in my fantasy league with Duaner was a bonus. Here is a pic from the Mets web site of my sister, my niece, and myself. We are on the left column, third down.

Now lets just hope the rain hold up tomorrow......:icon_roll

NEW YORK -- Carlos Beltran said he'd been hoping all day for a rainout, and in the end, he got his wish.
Sidelined with a bruised right knee, the Mets' center fielder was not in the lineup posted by manager Willie Randolph for Friday's game against the San Francisco Giants, a contest that was eventually postponed by rain at about 5:45 p.m. ET.

The rainout will be made up as part of a single-admission doubleheader played on Saturday afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 1:25 p.m.

The Mets will shuffle their pitching lineup slightly for Game 1, starting right-hander Orlando Hernandez (3-4, 6.04 ERA) opposite right-hander Matt Cain (3-5, 5.07 ERA), who had originally been scheduled to pitch Friday for San Francisco.

The Mets announced that Game 2 will start 30 minutes after the completion of the first contest, with left-hander Tom Glavine (8-2, 2.59 ERA) pushed back to pitch against right-hander Jamey Wright (5-4, 4.43 ERA).

Fans holding tickets to Friday's game can bring them to the advance ticket window at Shea Stadium to exchange them for seats to Saturday's single-admission doubleheader. The Mets will also honor tickets from Friday's game in exchange for tickets to future Mets home games.

MATSUI'S OUTTTA HERE!!!!!!!

NEW YORK -- The New York Mets have dealt second baseman Kaz Matsui and cash to the Colorado Rockies for catcher/first baseman Eli Marrero.

And according to media reports, the Mets paid the Rockies dearly to take Matsui off their hands.

Before the trade became official on Friday, Newsday reported that according to a person familiar with the details, the Mets would pay Morrero the $477,000 remaining on his contract and send the Rockies about $4.6 million. The Mets owe Matsui about $5.1 million on his current contract, the newspaper reported.

The Rockies optioned Matsui to Triple-A Colorado Springs and recalled outfielder Jorge Piedra.

Signed by the Mets to a $20.1 million, three-year contract before the 2004 season, Matsui never showed the talent that made him an All-Star and MVP in Japan. He struggled at shortstop in his first year with New York, and later got moved to second base.

The 30-year-old Matsui was hitting .200 with one home run and seven RBI in 38 games. For three straight seasons, he has homered in his first at-bat of the year.

The 32-year-old Marrero batted .217 with four homers and 10 RBI in 30 games for Colorado. He has started in right field, left field, first base and catcher this season.

Marrero has hit .244 with 64 homers, 256 RBI and 54 stolen bases while playing for St. Louis, Atlanta, Kansas City, Baltimore and Colorado.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Aaaaand another win.:icon_mrgr:clap:
It looks like we are finally seeing the Carlos Beltran that we'd all hoped for, he's on a tear.

Here are some nice stats (From MLB.com)

The Little Things Add Up:
The Mets are solidly in first place in the National League East, and though a lot credit is deservedly given to the top of the rotation with Pedro Martinez and Tom Glavine -- for helping the staff lead the National League in ERA and the Major Leagues in strikeouts -- and the big bats of Carlos Beltran, David Wright, and Carlos Delgado in the middle of the order, the team is excelling in many phases of the game.

• The Mets lead the Major Leagues with 59 stolen bases, with Reyes' 23 thefts leading the National League, and are stealing at an 84 percent success rate as a team.

• The team also leads the Majors in outfield assists with 17.

• They have shown resiliency late in games: Their nine walk-off wins are almost twice as many as any other team.

• Their 17 one-run victories are the most in the Major Leagues.

• The team's 16-5 mark in series openers is also the best mark in the Majors.

• They're even the best at giving the fans some bonus baseball, as they've played a Major League-best 11 extra-inning games.

The monster is growing.

Beltran - Delgado - Wright, AND then the speed, Reyes and Chavez, at the top of the order; one hell of a freaking monster!

Going to the O's game Friday night. Both games I have been to so far have been extra innings. If it was not for the damn off day, it would be Pedro's turn to pitch. The way it looks is I get Soler.

That was fucking fun to watch!
What a SLAUGHTER!!!!

I always stressed the similiarities of the character of both the '86 team and the current group we have now.
Now we are seeing the real "swagger", and confidence emerging. And that, is the true sign of a championship team.

Good times ahead boys, let's enjoy this ride.:icon_mrgr

You ever go to a Pedro game? I went to three last year and the 1-0 13 inn. game against Webb last week. The crowd for his games is like Dr. K games in the 80's.

I was shitting bricks in the 9th with the heart of the Philly line-up coming up with no one out and a man on first. Then, Wright make the play of the year. What a fucking play!

I do not want to mentioned how many games up we are until we are up 9.5... Well, I just did, but you get the gist.

Let's keep it going!

What a fucking game!

HR's all over the place, including Delgado ripping a moster shot. I had great seats, but decided to sit behind the Mets dugout for a few innings, including the 5 run inning.

Lots of Mets fans there tonight, at least 40%.

Every fucking Philly fan has a Chase Utley T-shirt.

DAvid Wright is the man. The play in the 9th happened so fast, and it was like, holy shit!

AWSOME pix Kuntz. It is so fun to go see your team win in an opposing teams stadium. Even if the other teams stadium is more fit for softball the hardball. The same company that made that piece-o-shit is making our stadium. I hope they make it so that every pop fly does not go to or over the wall.
