Well, so begins the salary cap cuts....teams have to be under (or at) the Salary cap by March 3rd, a whopping 9 days from today
So far the victims are as follows:
Ty Law (CB)
Jay Fiedler (QB)
Jason Fabini (RT)
Jerals Sowell (FB)
Barry Gardner (LB)
Lance Legree (DT)
Harry Williams Jr. (WR)
...yes they are all Jets. I dunno who else has been cut so far from other teams...you hear about it, post it up here
Only Franchisees that I know of are John Abraham (DE - Jets) and Nate Clements (CB - Buffalo)

Drew Brees was cut from the Chargers i think. Not a Jets fan, but I think he might be a good fit for them

No he wasnt. They just declined to tag him as the franchise or transition player. They have until March 3rd to offer him a contract and last I heard the San Diego front office said that they intend on keeping him there. I think it would be stupid for them to cut him loose and then bank on Philip Rivers because Brees has proven himself at the NFL level and Rivers has done nothing but hold a clipboard.

the Seahawks just put the Transition tag on LG Steve Hutchinson (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2342022)...interesting move transitioning him instead of Franchising him. He is free to negotiate with any other team, but Seattle has the right to match, and the one year deal is not guaranteed. His transition number is $6.391 million instead of the Franchise $6.983 that he could have gotten.
Also, apparently Indianapolis is not going to franchise Edgerrin James (no surprise there) and Baltimore is not going to franchise Jamal Lewis...however they may still try to simply resign him
Jeff Backus (LT - Detroit) just got franchised (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2341906) and the Vikings named Brian Williams (CB) their Transition player. (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2341839)
Teams have until 4pm today to use their Transition/Franchise tags...cuts will be happening this weekend and all next week

more info...Charles Woodson and Jamal Lewis not franchised, they'll be free-agents come March 3rd
49ers cut WR Johnnie Morton, CB Ahmed Plummer, and DE Chris Cooper
and the Bills released OT Mike Williams
Jimmy's Dignity
02-23-2006, 11:57 PM
oh...the 49ers released a total of 9 players...6 nobodies and those three I previously mentioned
Carolina hit DeShawn Foster with their Transition tag...$5.153 million
big name free agents = Julian Peterson, Charles Woodson, Edgerrin James,
Shawn Alexander, Jamal Lewis....things are heating up :icon_mrgr
for some people, it's all about pitchers and catchers...I only do that after the Draft
John Clayton (ugliest human alive) has a couple of predictions with some free agents:
Shawn Alexander = Cardinals, Vikings (or Packers, I wasn't paying attention), Seahawks
Edgerrin James = Jaguars, Vikings, Colts
Jamal Lewis = Panthers, Ravens
Ahman Green = Vikings, Cardinals, Packers
Drew Brees = Dolphins, no pause at all right there...if the 'Fins fall back out of it, he said don't be surprised if Detroit pulls in there too
Adam Vinateri = Patriots or maybe even the Cowboys
I think that he mentioned Mike Vanderjagt being possibly out there too, in which case Dallas would definately look at him too (cause their kicking situation is an abortion)

Gotta love the ineptitude that is the New York Jets front office. Personally, I cant be happier to see Pennington go up in smoke, because I been yelling about how he really wasnt anything special since he started playing, but all my Jets fans friends think he is Jesus with a football. I hope he gets cut and ends up going to New Orleans to back up Matt Leinart.
Nice to see Green go, Coughlin hated him, maybe that means we'll make a play on a free agent LB, although I suspect we'll end up drafting one, Ernie Sims or Bobby Carpenter might drop to us, I really like Chad Greenway, but he'll go pretty early I think.

okay folks...this thread is going to explode in the next week or so (sure it'll be a lot of posts by me...but still). The fact that the CBA talks have stalled, collapsed, what have you, will wind up creating a lot more free agents than expected. It will be an interesting future for the NFL if the owners lose the salary cap...if they don't figure out some serious revenue sharing amongst the teams we'll see an NFL that instead of having the lovely parity, I'll wind up looking like MLB...too many teams, most of which stink
I hope to shit they get the CBA extended or make a new one. If the NFL goes on a work stoppage...I'm pretty sure I'm going to kill myself

Shawn Alexander staying in Seattle for 8 years/$62 million. Can't say I blame them. Despite what anybody says, he's a hell of a back and he gets the job done, Superbowl not included.
Browns are in the running for Willie McGinest, and they are helped by the fact that his former DC is their head coach. Also, they have tons of cap room to wkr with, so they may bring in some big name guys. They re-signed Droughns to a new multi-year deal, which I think is a good move. He's a tough back who fights for every yard.
The 49ers signed Nedney to a multi-year deal. He's a good, serviceable kicker. Now, they can go focus on getting some fucking offensive help. They desperately need it. They are probably going to lose Newberry and Peterson, 2 people they really can't afford to lose. Let's hope they figure out how to keep them in the fold.

Wow, nice sign for the Cards. If they can figure out their QB situation and upgrade that line a bit they will have a pretty good Off. It will be interesting to see how they do in the weak NFC West next season.
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Edgerrin James ran off to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, agreeing to a four-year, $30 million contract with a long-downtrodden franchise that had the worst running game in the league a year ago.
James, who became a free agent after seven seasons with the Colts, knew there was little chance he would return to Indianapolis when the season ended in a loss to Pittsburgh in the AFC divisional round.
Last month, Colts president Bill Polian admitted he was taking a gamble by letting James hit the free-agent market. And now James is gone after setting team records for rushing attempts (2,188), yards (9,226) and touchdowns (64).
"It's a great situation. All they really need is a back," James said at a news conference. "They've got an MVP quarterback (Kurt Warner), they've got two Pro Bowl receivers. They got a back and they're going to shore up the offensive line."
Then he added, "OK it's a risk. But hey, I'm a poker player. You can take it to the river. I'm not scared to make a change. I'm not scared to go out on a limb and try something different."
Polian could have kept James by using the franchise tag on him for the second straight year. Instead, Polian, decided against the move, which would have increased James' salary next season to more than $10 million. That made James, a four-time Pro Bowl choice, one of the most attractive free agents available when free agency opened Saturday.
"I'm happy for him," Colts coach Tony Dungy told The Associated Press in Indianapolis, where he was watching the Big Ten championship game. "He was fantastic for us the time we were here, we wish we could have kept him but you can't keep everyone."
James will receive $11.5 million in bonus money, making his first year compensation $14.75 million, according to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. The remaining $15.25 million will be paid out over the final three years of the deal.
Last week, NFL rushing champ Shaun Alexander signed an eight-year, $62 million deal with Seattle that will pay him $18.5 million guaranteed over the first two years.
It was clear James wanted a fresh start. He was looking for a long-term deal, something the Colts weren't willing to give him. After Indianapolis placed the franchise tag on him last year, Polian gave James' agent permission to look for a trade but there were no takers — even when Polian said the asking price was less than a first-round pick.
But Dungy credited James with playing through his disappointment and turning in a Pro Bowl season.
Arizona was the only place James visited. Tentative stops had been scheduled with other teams Rosenhaus wouldn't identify.
"But this was a no-brainer," the agent said. "It was the first stop and the last stop because it was the best stop."
James said coach Dennis Green's system is similar and commitments were made to upgrade the team's shaky offensive line. He joins a franchise that has had one winning season since coming to Arizona in 1988, but the Cardinals will move into their long-awaited new stadium — with a retractable roof and real grass — this fall.
James and the Colts had clashed before. When he skipped a mandatory minicamp in 2002, Polian said publicly that it was because James wanted to renegotiate his contract. James contended, however, that he was still rehabbing his injured left knee in Miami and couldn't have participated in the workouts anyway.
His freewheeling personality also created some problems. Last summer, James said he wouldn't travel with the team to Japan for a preseason game because he didn't want to sit on a plane that long. But he backed off that stance during training camp and made the trip anyway, at the urging of team officials.
At the Super Bowl, James said he hoped to play for a team that wanted him.
James said he was lobbied by Cardinals' players, especially wide receiver Anquan Boldin, who tried to tell him that he was the key missing piece.
"We're serious about winning," said Cardinals vice president Michael Bidwill. "The new stadium allows us to do some things that we haven't been able to do before."
With plenty of salary cap room, the Cardinals also signed free agent offensive guard Milford Brown, a 13-game starter for Houston last season, and defensive tackle Kendrick Clancy, who started 15 games for the New York Giants last year.
When next season starts, James will be taking handoffs from Warner instead of Peyton Manning.
The two-time NFL rushing champion teamed with Manning to make the Colts one of the best teams in the league. James helped Indianapolis make the playoffs six times in his seven seasons, missing the postseason in 2001 when James sat out the final 10 games after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
James has been one of the most productive running backs in the NFL after the Colts took him with the fourth overall pick in 1999. He has rushed for more than 1,000 yards in six of his eight NFL seasons, and ran for more than 1,500 yards in each of the last two.
"It's something we've never had to look to do before, we've had to replace other positions and now we just have to look at running back, and that's the way the system works," Dungy said. "We'll go forward, we generally try to work from the draft, but we'll see what happens."
Good aquistion for the Cardinals.

Very solid aquisition. If this team has a good draft they have a great shot at the playoffs. Two Pro Bowl caliber WR's, a Pro Bowl RB, a former Pro Bowl and 2 time MVP QB(Warner may not be the Warner of old but is still capable of leading the team to the playoffs). They need to add another solid CB to go along with Antrelle Rolle and another linebacker. Solid team.

I was thinking the same thing. I think they dumped alot of cap when they traded Coles and let Arrington go though. They must have cleared it out somehow, because I know their cap situation was fucked for a while. It's called deferred salary. It's how the Eagles always stay far under the salary cap. You sign a guy for 4 or 5 years and defer most of his salary to the last year maybe the last two years then you release him before those years start. You get them for a couple years and keep them from putting you over the salary cap. And since this is still a fairly new method, players continue to fall for it. But that's slowly changing and soon the teams doing this will not be able find good free agaents willing to sign a contract with them.

If Brees signs with the Saints then they’ll probably draft the DE out of NC State Mario Williams, which really fucks up the draft.

Harrington likely to be released
<Mar. 16> The acquisitions of Josh McCown and Jon Kitna likely represent the end of Harrington's days in Detroit, ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports.
After four disapppointing seasons, Harrington, who was the third overall player selected in the 2002 draft, is expected to be released. The 26-year-old started in 55 of 58 appearances and completed 986 of 1,802 passes for 10,242 yards, with 60 touchdown passes, 62 interception and a 68.1 passer rating.
Harrington is owed a $4 million roster bonus June 15, and his base salary for 2006 is $4.45 million. Releasing Harrington, who has compiled an 18-37 record as a starter, will save the Lions about $5.4 million in 2006 cap space.
Unless he plays half decent. Kitna can get the job done but he's as developed as he'll ever get and he's never gonna be a great QB, McCown stinks, and if Harrington shows a spark he still has a shot at keeping his job over the two career backups.
McCown is really not that bad at all. He's better than Harrington and still has room to improve. Now that he has a team with a pretty good O Line, excellent WRs and a good RB he really might be able to do something. And if he cant, Kitna can definitly get the job done for them. That division is stupid weak so they could be serious contenders for it.
My bet is on T.O. going to Dallas.

Packers meet Favre's demands, overpay for Charles Woodson (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2423159)
Four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Charles Woodson, one of the last premium players remaining in the free agent market but also a potential gamble given his recent injury history, reached a contract agreement on Wednesday evening with the Green Bay Packers, league sources confirmed.
The agreement is a seven-year deal that can be worth as much as $52 million, ESPN.com's Michael Smith reports. Woodson will make $10.5 million in the first year of the deal and $18 million over the first three years. Woodson will also receive a $3 million bonus if he is selected to the Pro Bowl in two of the first three years of the contract.
Notable is that the agreement came one day after quarterback Brett Favre, who urged Packers executives to make some high-profile additions to the roster in the offseason, apprised Green Bay officials that he will return for a 16th season in 2006. It is not believed that Favre's decision was based on any inkling that the Packers were about to land Woodson.
Woodson chose the Packers over the Tampa Bay Bucs, essentially the only other team that demonstrated legitimate interest in him since he became an unrestricted free agent last month. Woodson, 29, had played his entire eight-year career with the Oakland Raiders, who took him in the first round of the 1998 draft.
Oakland made no attempt to re-sign Woodson.
In terms of name value, Woodson is clearly the Packers' most significant offseason addition. Whether his game still lives up to Woodson's name, however, is questionable, at least based on the last two seasons.
The former University of Michigan star and 1997 Heisman Trophy winner was designated by the Raiders as a franchise player each of the last two seasons. But Woodson suffered injuries in both of those seasons, finished each year on injured reserve, and appeared in just 19 games.
In fact, Woodson, sidelined by knee and hip injuries in 2004 and by a broken leg in 2005, has not played a full 16-game schedule since 2001. He suffered the broken leg in a game against Buffalo last Oct. 23, and made just six appearances, a career low.
The injuries were costly to the Raiders on the field but also off it. With the two consecutive franchise designations, Woodson earned a total of $19.32 million in 2004-2005. The return on that pricey investment: Just 103 tackles, two interceptions and 11 passes defensed.
For his career, Woodson has played in 106 games and registered 456 tackles, 17 interceptions, 66 passes defensed, 5½ sacks, 14 forced fumbles and five recoveries. In the last five seasons, however, Woodson has recorded more than one interception just one time, in 2003, when he had three. He has never posted more than five interceptions in a season and his career best came in his rookie campaign of 1998, when he was the fourth overall player chosen in the draft.
His supporters used to suggest, with some justification, that Woodson's interception numbers were never impressive because most opposing quarterbacks rarely tested him. Indeed, for the first half of his career, Woodson was one of the top cover defenders in the league. But there are skeptics now, particularly given his recent injuries, who feel he will never perform up to his prior Pro Bowl level.
Tampa Bay had planned to use Woodson at safety had the Bucs landed him. The Bucs were familiar with Woodson because general manager Bruce Allen and coach Jon Gruden held the same positions in Oakland for part of his tenure there. Tampa Bay officials had suggested, though, that they would not overspend to add Woodson to their secondary.
It is believed Woodson will remain at cornerback with the Packers and start opposite Al Harris, allowing the Green Bay coaches to move 2004 first-round pick Ahmad Carroll to the nickel cornerback spot.

I dont really see how it could work out to be horrible, unless *god forbid* he gets a serious injury. He's one of the top OLB's in the league and with Pierce, Strahan and Osi, it's gonna make the Giants pass rush really difficult to contain.
The Giants thread has alot more of people's reactions to it, if you didnt guess, they're almost all positive.

As for the Arrington signing...I hope to christ that the Giants have to pay him the $7 million per...that means he hits all of his escalator clauses and has been playing well/stayin' healthy. He got benched in Washington and only has 1 sack over the last two seasons...he didn't like the defensive scheme down in Washington and he didn't fit in with the personel down there. I think with Tim Lewis and Tom Coughlin he'll fit in well. Pierce has completely bought into the defensive scheme, and he'll help Arrington adjust too

Joey Harrington traded to the Fins (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2442339)
All the Jets fans who are jacking off about Kellen Clemens can see what happened to the last Oregon QB who was supposed to be good. :icon_roll
The much discussed trade of Detroit Lions quarterback Joey Harrington to the Miami Dolphins was finally completed Friday afternoon.
After more than a month of haggling, and intermittent acrimony in the bargaining between the two teams, the Lions accepted a sixth-round pick in the 2007 draft in exchange for the four-year veteran. The choice can escalate to a fifth-rounder if Harrington reaches certain playing time thresholds.
The deal will allow Harrington to begin participating in Miami's organized team activities, which begin on Monday. The Dolphins pushed for a resolution to the prolonged talks because they want Harrington to have time to assimilate the offense before the club convenes for a three-day mini-camp June 9-11.
Last month, Miami offered Detroit a sixth-round selection in the 2007 draft and the Lions refused to make a deal. In fact, Lions team president Matt Millen attempted during the draft to seek other suitors and was in talks with the Cleveland Browns about a trade. But because of his contractual situation, and the need for any new team to readjust a deal deemed too prohibitive for a backup, Harrington held some leverage and essentially refused to discuss a restructuring with any team but the Dolphins.
Apparently, adding the provision that can raise the compensation to a fifth-round choice was enough to satisfy Detroit officials.
Under his Detroit contract, Harrington was due a $4 million roster bonus on June 15 and a 2006 base salary of $4.5 million. Until the latest movement in talks between the Lions and Dolphins, it appeared that Millen might simply keep Harrington until just before the roster bonus became due.
Harrington last month reached a tentative two-year agreement with the Dolphins, which prompted Millen to suggest that Miami officials had acted improperly. The NFL Management Council, the league's labor arm, ruled that there was no impropriety, and that Harrington was free to deal with teams because the Lions had granted him and agent David Dunn the right to seek out potential trade partners.
At various times after the Lions publicly announced that Harrington would not return in 2006, and that they would attempt to trade him, various franchises indicated interest in the former University of Oregon star. He visited with the Cincinnati Bengals and there were indications that the Denver Broncos and the Kansas City Chiefs had varying degrees of interest as well. None of those teams stepped forward, however, with the kind of conviction the Dolphins demonstrated.
The Dolphins covet Harrington as an insurance policy against the possibility that starting quarterback Daunte Culpepper, who is still rehabilitating from surgery to repair three torn ligaments in his right knee, might not be available at the outset of the regular season. Acquired from the Minnesota Vikings in a trade for a second-round draft choice, Culpepper is said to be ahead of schedule for his recovery, but there are still doubts about when he will be completely rehabilitated from the severe injury suffered in October.
If Culpepper cannot open the season, Harrington would be the Dolphins' starter.
Harrington, 27, started 55 games for the Lions and posted a record of 18-37. He completed 986 of 1,802 passes for 10,242 yards, with 60 touchdown passes and 62 interceptions, for an efficiency rating of 68.1. Harrington started 11 games in 2005, was benched at one point in favor of Jeff Garcia, and then regained his starting job.
He reportedly asked Lions officials earlier in the spring, including Millen and first-year head coach Rod Marinelli, to either trade or release him. Detroit has signed a trio of veteran quarterbacks -- Jon Kitna, Josh McCown and Shaun King -- in the offseason. Kitna and McCown will compete for the starting job.

askewcore
05-14-2006, 01:25 AM
He'll do okay because he'll be holding a clipboard. He was the worst draft pick they've made in a while. Backus is a good OT, Kevin Jones is nasty, Rogers has to get his head on straight and stay healthy, Roy Willimams is strong and Mike Williams will be good. The only reason they drafted so many WRs is because they though they could salvage the tremendous piece of shit that is Joey Harrington.
omgzpizzowned
05-14-2006, 01:26 AM
Mike Williams and Rogers were REALLY bad picks, unless Mike gets turned into a TE 'cause that's what he is on the pro level. Kevin Jones I think will never be a good nfl back, not in Detroit anyway.
Good job passing up DJ last year for a shitty WR though.
askewcore
05-14-2006, 01:34 AM
DJ? Derrick Johnson? They also passed on DeMarcus Ware and Shawne Merriman. Those probably would have been better examples. (unless you were referring to someone else and i totally missed it)
You cant say Kevin Jones isnt gonna ever be good after two seasons. He ran fo something like 1100 yards as a rookie, thats pretty good. He fell off last year because he was hurt, and only played 13 games. They have a decent enough line where he could easily have success there, he already did once.
You're probably right about Mike Williams, he might be too slow to be a big time WR, but if they use him right, send him over the middle and shit, he could be a Keyshawn-type guy.
Rogers has talent, he's just never on the field.
omgzpizzowned
05-14-2006, 01:35 AM
Rogers also has attitude problems, and Roy has problems holding on to the ball.
Mike doesn't run routes well enough to be a Keyshawn-like possession guy. He was way too green and way too slow to take with a top 10 pick.
askewcore
05-14-2006, 01:47 AM
Eh, Roy will be fine. Rogers is definitly a jerk (or a pothead, or both) and they also drafted Mike way too high, he probably would have dropped into the second round, especially since he took a year off. I'm not saying they're a well run team, in fact, I think Matt Millen sucks something awful. But I dont think Harrington is ever going to amount to anything, especially in Miami, they got a nice supporting cast, but no O-Line.
BTW, were you talking about Derrick Johnson when you said "DJ"?
