There are too many people who have never learned how to think or formulate an opinion that is their own, and is cogent. Many people simply parrot what they hear others say, and spout unrealistic, overly simplistic solutions to a whole variety of dilemmas.

I had a teacher who was a Serbian-national teaching history, he actually made a statement during the whole Kosovo war that "The only relationships I have had with Muslims ended in explosions" and that "The war in Kosovo is the United States supporting the Muslim agenda."

I'm a fairly liberally leaning person and was pretty shocked by the material. You know what I did with that information? I stored it into my memory bank and retained it. I didn't cry to my superintendent or principal in an effort to get him fired. What benefit does suppressing alternate opinions going to do to improve social relations? While I don't agree that Kosovo was an anti-Serbian/pro-Muslim war, I am grateful to know his side of the story.

I remember reading the Communist Manifest in Freshman Year history class and the teacher advocated the position of communism and it was up to us to tell him why his position was right or wrong. I can vividly remember how great that conversation was, even though, looking back, a lot of it was the disorganized thinking of high school freshmen, it was still a great conversation.

I don't disagree.

The whole rote learning technique that comes with pointing at the map and saying a place name doesn't work well for the average student's ability to remember and recall. If you have something interesting or important to link to the issues, the students will remember better. Since the teacher is teaching geography, issues of culture, world news, and history should be introduced.

ANY teacher who states only the Atlas statistics about a country is bound to pass a bunch of students who will never remember what they were taught in his class. Geography instruction requires careful consideration to the needs of the students learning about it.
