4 teens arrested in death of NYU student hit by car

NEW YORK — Four teenagers were charged with murder as adults in the death of a college student who was hit by a car while fleeing the group of boys, police said today.

A witness told police the youths allegedly tried to attack the New York University junior in Harlem April 1. Broderick Hehman, 20, darted into the street and was hit, police said. He died Tuesday.

Hassan Mayfield and Andre Johnson, both 15, and Denzel Fell and Bobby Guzman, both 13, were arrested late Saturday on charges of second-degree murder and second-degree attempted robbery, police said. All four were in custody today, police said.

Johnson's lawyer, Adam Freedman, said his client claims he's innocent.

A relative of Guzman, who identified himself as Uncle Louie, said his nephew was a good student who never missed school and had awards for attendance.

"He's not a murderer," he said while fighting back tears outside a Harlem police station. "He's a straight-A kid."

No telephone numbers could be found for the other two boys.

So black, so violent. I would think that any violent crime is a "hate" crime.

I would not criminalize anyone's thoughts while committing a crime, it's the act itself that is a violation of the law, not what you say while doing it.

Why is a gay/black/minority fella's life worth more than mine if he is murdered because he is a minority? All criminals should be punished the same way....severely.


Murder is murder, robbery is robbery, forget the demographics of the victim and actor.

I run across it from time to time. pretty good. And I agree with you, life is life and no one group deserves to be placed on a level above or below another.

I'll be the first one to admit the double standard. The way things are covered, portrayed, and even the justice system itself is totally screwed.

The local coverage surprisingly is reporting the "youths" were screaming "get the white guy" and other racial things.

My point, and many peoples points on the thread is that if this were a case where some white guys did the same thing the media would blow it up as a "hate crime," but when it's an obvious case where the guy was targeted for being white the same standard doesn't apply.

I've always been against "hate crimes" like you said, you murder somebody like that it's damn near a given there's "hate" involved. The thoughts are what's been criminalized. It should all just be murder, or whatever crime occured. Equal, no double standard. But since this is the case, apply the standard across the board.

I know it would be internally satisfying for a group of minorities to FINALLY get charged with a hate crime against a white...but two wrongs dont make a right.

As a black man, even I can tell this is a hate crime. If even if that's not what these little shits intended, as soon as they shouted "get the white boy", they made it one. I for one I can't stand this whole notion of a hate crime. If a white guy kills a black guy or vice versa, they still suffer same fate, they are dead. The funeral is still going to cost the same amount of money. All the hate crime laws do is try to police people's thoughts. They serve no purpose. This is just another form of liberals acting out their reverse slave owner mentality.
