NEW YORK - Banned by Comedy Central from showing an image of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, the creators of "South Park" skewered their own network for hypocrisy in the cartoon's most recent episode.

The comedy — in an episode aired during Holy Week for Christians — instead featured an image of Jesus Christ defecating on
President Bush and the American flag.

In an elaborately constructed two-part episode of their Peabody Award-winning cartoon, "South Park" creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker intended to comment on the controversy created by a Danish newspaper's publishing of caricatures of Muhammad. Muslims consider any physical representation of their prophet to be blasphemous.

When the cartoons were reprinted in newspapers worldwide in January and February, it sparked a wave of protests primarily in Islamic countries.

Parker and Stone were angered when told by Comedy Central several weeks ago that they could not run an image of Muhammad, according to a person close to the show who didn't want to be identified because of the issue's sensitivity.

The network's decision was made over concerns for public safety, the person said.

Comedy Central said in a statement issued Thursday: "In light of recent world events, we feel we made the right decision." Its executives would not comment further.

As is often the case with Parker and Stone, they built "South Park" around the incident. In Wednesday's episode, the character Kyle is shown trying to persuade a Fox network executive to air an uncensored "Family Guy" even though it had an image of Muhammad.

"Either it's all OK, or none of it is," Kyle said. "Do the right thing."

The executive decides to strike a blow for free speech and agrees to show it. But at the point where Muhammad is to be seen, the screen is filled with the message: "Comedy Central has refused to broadcast an image of Muhammad on their network."

It is followed shortly by the images of Christ, Bush and the flag.

A frequent "South Park" critic, William Donohue of the anti-defamation group Catholic League, called on Parker and Stone to resign out of principle for being censored.

"The ultimate hypocrite is not Comedy Central — that's their decision not to show the image of Muhammad or not — it's Parker and Stone," he said. "Like little whores, they'll sit there and grab the bucks. They'll sit there and they'll whine and they'll take their shot at Jesus. That's their stock in trade."

Parker and Stone did not immediately respond to a request through a spokesman for comment.

It's the second run-in over religion in a few months for the satirists. Comedy Central pulled a March rerun of a "South Park" episode that mocked Scientologists.
Isaac Hayes, a Scientologist who voiced the Chef character on the show, resigned in protest over the episode.

"South Park" again got the last word last month with an episode where Chef was seemingly killed and mourned as a jolly guy whose brains were scrambled by the "Super Adventure Club," which turns its members into pedophiles.

Only last week, "South Park" won broadcasting's prestigious Peabody. Awards director Horace Newcomb said at the time that by its offensiveness, the show "reminds us of the need for being tolerant."

Why needlessly take peoples life's for a show, is a laugh really worth that?

When I saw this, I thought that was supposed to be a joke, I did not really think CC did this.

The annoying part is how badly the media messed up the episode in recaps. They are making a bigger deal of showing the Muslim cartoon at the end where all the American's are shitting than the entire premise of how fucked up Muslims are.

The media is just happy that Bush and Christ were shat upon and do not even care about the point of the episode.

I posted this in the Official Wackbag.com South Park thread but at first I thought it was a joke since I heard about similiar things in syndicated South Park episodes. But this makes it clear that they wanted to do a Mohammed episode, CC said no, so they did it anyway but with a slightly different take on it.

Also Donny, context my ........ The fact that they can show Jesus pooping on a flag but can't show Mohammed standing there, shows the double standard that exists. Die already.

And South Park, when looking at a lot of shows, comparatively tends to show Bush in much better light and that's one of the reasons I love it so.

Exactly. See the part where the gaggle of reporters were accusing Bush of creating this "so-called First Amendment?" Matt & Trey were, at the same time, blasting reporters and the media for being hypocritical, and making fun of the current culture of blaming everything on Bush.

Ever hear of the term "South Park Conservative?"

that statement makes no fucking sense. matt and trey's voice is heard through south park. they make their statements every week on that show. what the fuck is donahue smoking?

southpark proves how ridiculous the whole issue is by fucking with jesus, bush, and america all at once... and what a fucking surprise no one gives a fuck. and the cunt prophet is hidden when all he was doing was selling lemonade. i want to slice the prophets throat and shit on his rotting neckhole.

Of all people, for Billy Donohue to call others money grabbing whores and hypocrites is hilarious. He's built his whole career on being a public whore, and getting rich in the process.

Not only is Bill Donahue a complete douche, but he missed the point completely! What Matt and Trey expressed with Jesus shitting on the American flag is Catholics are not extremists. We can see something like that and laugh. We can see our savior as a cartoon shitting, and still say to ourselves, "It's just a cartoon" If you believe in Jesus and God, then things like that should not effect you one way or the other.

Bill Donahue will be in hell when all is said and done. He is worse than Enron. He robs believers of their money by exploiting Jesus. The quicker he dies and goes to hell the better!

Matt and Trey are the true portrayer's of the word of God. LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST AND ENJOY IT TO THE FULLEST! That's what I get from God. And, Matt and Trey make it easy to live by that word.

If you can't take a joke, crash a plane into a mosque, because you all deserve death!

FUCK YOU!

I just watched the second part of the episode, and it was by far the best episode of SP I've ever seen. While it might not have been the funniest, the complexity, and the message were just so brilliant. They made fun of themselves, Family Guy, FOX, Comedy Central, Islam, the media, and pussy-Americans (sticking head in the sand). This is one episode people have to watch over and over again to fully appreciate, therefore the news snippets, and synopsis is inherently bullshit. You can't sum up an episode like this, otherwise you get people like William Donohue offering up opinions on things they don't know enough about. Get your fucking facts straight.

BTW- I think their criticisms of the Family Guy writers were somewhat accurate, but that's why people like the show, it is just random a lot of the time.

for some reason that double standard makes me proud to be American. I like the fact that we can handle seeing jesus and bush shit on the American flag and laugh and not be offended. Meanwhile these Islamic BABIES can't handle a guy who looks like a depiction of Mohammed doing something totally silly and random.

By the way, i read somewhere else that in the "Superfriends" episdoe of SOuth Park with all the religions in the sky they did Depict Mohammed and no one noticed. Is that true? I'm trying to remember the episode...i think i recall it

Exactly. I love South Park, but Comedy Central are a bunch of faggot, leftist hypocrits. They have aired episodes (including this one) with an animated Jesus, but they shit their pants over showing Mohammad. Where's the fucking logic in that? I can't stand Bush and I'm glad to see South Park portraying him that way. They aren't afraid to take different sides of issues. They shit on Bush one moment (literaly) while showing him as the only sane person in a room full of media idiots the next.

Bush is an ass, but Bush bashing is really getting tired.

Phenominal episode, I hope the show continues. Fuck comedy central, fuck Islam, and fuck being scared of terrorists.

What am I gonna run in fear that I'll get struck by lightning? Cause thats allot more likely than dieing in a terrorist attack. Let em win once, you let em win forever. You don't fucking negotiate with terrorists.

Fuck terrorists like Osama, and fuck terrorists like Bill Donahue.

I praise christians for not rioting in the streets, but fucking fundamentalist christian shitdicks really need to be stopped. More so, the insane muslims need to be killed. Too bad that the real problem is always in the pussy corperate management. FCC? Bill Donahue? Terrorists? None of them ever cuased any significant shift in America. We do it to ourselves, and we need to stop befor we destroy the America we love.

see thats the thing..its always about the visual and not the context. yes they had bush and jesus shitting on the flag..so what? the context of the scene, which is really funny, is everyone is afraid of the muslim's retalliation and when they do, its there own cartoon which is a really bad, horribliey animated and voice-overed cartoon of them shitting on everything. WHen i saw it, i didnt even think it was anything offensive at all, it was just silly

I'm not in ANY way offended by the ending, and even if I was, they should still be allowed to do it. What does piss me off is that Matt & Trey went ahead with the episode anyway. Granted they were able to get a clear message across, but I actually would have liked them to stick w/ the T&P episode and just say this is what we are doing because Comedy Central are faggots.

What really amazes me is how much Bill Donohue has in common with Al Qaeda (and their camel-fucking associates). Bill and Osama both apparently worship a "Supreme" Being so wimpy and puny that he must be protected from jabs in books, movies, and-- yes-- cartoons. Sticks and stones indeed, sir!

Hey Donohue-- if your God is really all-knowing and almighty, doncha think he could take a joke? Sober up and get back to me on that.

Anyone notice that when Donahue called in last summer, he admitted that he hadn't heard the SFS3 incident, and that he was only going by what he heard on the news, saying that none of the reports he heard on the mainstream media were any different from one another, so thats how it must've happened?

How much you wanna bet Bill Donahue didn't even see the episode? That he just saw a synopsis or news report saying that at the end of the episode, there was a cartoon of jesus shitting on the american flag (completely out of context of the cartoon being made by muslims as a retaliation to Family Guy's showing the image of muhammed)?

This whole situation is so cookie cutter "cooperation-stifiling-free-speech-and-bending-over-backwards-for-special-interest-groups".... with comedy central censoring the image of muhammed (which i honestly thought at the time was a JOKE to make CC look like a bunch of pussies), and comedy central so perfectly playing the antagonistic role presented in the episode itself...that I wouldn't be surprised in the least if i found out that comedy central and Matt and Trey were in all this together just to make their message that more powerful and gain that much more publicity.

I wonder if there's a stipulation in their contract that says just how much CC can butcher their episodes until they're able to say "nay".
