So I've been watching the new season of the deadliest catch. Now if you've ever watched the show there are alwasy setbacks when these guys go out. Things break all the time, storms are too rough to fish, engines break down, not to mention one of the more dangerous jobs. The season is very short so every setback might cost them money. One thing I never knew would happen is the boat turning back because someone wanted to get off.

I knew the episode was coming up that someone wanted to jump overboard and was kinda looking forward to it. They played this old dude out to be crazy on one boat to lead you to believe that he loses it and wants to jump overbaord.. Not quite. But the captain of the boat the old dude is on gets a message from a nearby boat "Yeah my greenhorn (a guy working on a crab boat for the first time or rookie) just walked up to me and said 'captain. I'm going to jump over board' can you please notify the coast guard... oh my god he just put on a survival suit" Keep in mind the waters are fataly cold and so rough if you go in there is a slim chance of finding you and slimer if surviving even if they do. SO fast foward to the part where the boat HAS TO GO IN BECAUSE THIS GUY WANTS TO GET OFF comes up. Lo and behold.. there is a smaller patrice o'neil looking mo'-fo' getting his stuff off the boat and being escorted by a trooper. Turns out the captain hired him right off the dock as a kid looking for work. Good choice on the spoon capt'. BIG mistake.

Now schwoogies and water don't mix in the first place. This kid is on there saying it was his FIRST TIME on the ocean.!!!He never saw waves as big as buildings. etc etc. Now this kid wants to go back??!?! because he doesn't like it!!? Listen buddy there are people on this ship whose family are provided for based on how much crab they catch. You don't give a fuck about them and you just want to get off so you decide your gonna jump off??? How about just staying on the boat but not working? He's lucky the whities didn't pull a Scott peterson on him and just toss him off. Probably the first and last black guy to ever get a job on a fishing boat.. and rightfully so.

Comments???

Funny as shit when they showed the greenhorn. I have to give the guy some sort of credit though. The captain wanted to pay him for his time spent out there (the greenhorn's only get a very small percentage of what the boat takes in. It comes out of everyone else's shares). He was telling the trooper it wasn't necessary. Black guy turning down money. Who saw that coming.
If you caught the boat @ the end of the show getting slammed by a rogue wave & flipped on it's side. I'm pretty sure it was the same boat. I don't think much happens though as it was not the focus of next weeks preview.

I caught two episodes of that show last night. Some of the things that the king crab catchers have to go through to make a living is so extreme. Cut off fingers, motors and all those other things you said. A boat can catch nothing in their cages and then a boat a few miles away can have the catch of their lifetimes.

It's a great show.

that pussy cost them a lot of money!

Not as much as it would have in the past. Starting this year, rather than having total amount that the fleet can catch and letting them all compete to see how much of that total each boat can bring in, they changed the rules so that each boat it pre-allocated how much they are allowed to catch. The reason for the change is that these lunatics were getting killed going overboard because they were fishing when it really wasn't safe to be doing so. Now, when there is an unsafe storm, they can take a day off without worrying that someone else is catching crab that they are in competition for.

This year, they know how much they will catch. Where the amount that they earn becomes affected is in how much it costs to maintain the boat while they are trying to catch that crab. The costs of food, fuel, etc... come off the top when they split the money amongst the crew. What that guy cost them was the cost of fuel to take him back to Dutch Harbor and then get back to their spot as well as the additional food that got consumed because they had to spend extra time at sea driving him mome rather than fishing.

He's lucky those cameras were on board, otherwise he could have been the next bait going into the pot.

I've seen the show. I wouldn't go anywhere near it and I've done some dangerous jobs before.

Me thinks that is why the troopers where at the dock. The crew must have been going nuts. They pay for that fuel. Do you know how much fuel a 100 foot ship uses to go 100 miles in and back? And then they get hit with a 60 foot wave and get knocked over? They must really love that knitter.

you beat me too it, if i was on that boat that boy would have fallen in and that would have been that. when i was a kid (early 90's) my buddy wanted to go up to alaska and try to get on a crabbing boat till we found out that the chances of accualy gettin on the boat were slim to none, let alone how dangerous it was, now that i think back maby i should have done it so i could be a mans man. oh and crabshow BEST on tv

When they first showed the guy my brother in law and I looked at each
other and just started laughing. We were waiting for each other to make
the first racist joke.

This series ran last week and the same boat is the one that got
knocked on its side by a rougue wave. They show the captains
13 year old daughter being slightly hurt when she slams into a cabinet.

So this guy hires some random dude off the dock to spend time at
sea in the same boat as his daughter... you think he would be a little
more picky :) brave dude.
