Just watching Daily Show's section on The DaVinci Code (complete with O+A reference), and the movie coming out, I have to ask. Has anyone read the book? And has anyone besides me consider it a load of shit? Not because it totally warped my already fragile view of religion (which it didn't) but because the quality was literally a steaming bowl of bowel juice.

This thread can also be used to discuss the upcoming movie starring Tom Hanks, the DaVinci Diet, and, if you wish, Leonardo DaVinci himself.

I read the book, and have also given it as a gift on several occations. I can't wait for the movie to come out.
And to clairify my postion I have read both the bible and mother goose and they are equally great fairy tales too. And the evolution tattoo I have should sure up any doubt as to were I stand on the issue of religion.

I am almost done with the book and have also DVRd a few of the History channel and NGC shows about it also and will watch them after I'm done with the book. I'm really interested to learn more about the whole thing. If there is even a fraction of truth to what Dan Brown writes about, then I have a lot of questions about my religion. Other things that I have learned that are fact including the recently rediscovered gospel of Judas and the fact that their was over 30 gospels but one pope back 1700 years ago decided that we didnt need to learn all those other ones have really peaked my interest in religion recently.
It was interesting that the church didnt freak out as much when the book was really hot but now that the movie is coming out they are getting up on the holy soap box against it. Is it possibile that they realize a huge amount of people may start to ask questions soon since it's likely more people are going to go see this movie then take the time to read the book. Personally reading the book has allowed me to look certain things up while reading it that I wouldnt be able to do until the end of the movie. The next few months should be interesting.

I've read the book and I loved it. I also think his "theory" is complete bullshit.

I took the book as a great "adventure" story where one clue leads to another a la "National Treasure." (Which is probably what I'll compare the DaVinci Code movie to... rather than compare it to my religion, Catholocism.)

But I agree with Palerider in that there are lots of questions nowadays... with things being found. I'm not stressing about it, though... because I know when I die, I'll find out all the secrets and truth and stuff. Looking forward to it! lol

I read and enjoyed "The DaVinci Code". Afterward, I ended up reading everything else that Dan Brown wrote. To anyone thinking about reading "The DaVinci Code", I would recommend first reading "Angels & Demons". It's the prequel to "DaVinci". Reading "DaVinci" first ruins some parts of "Angels & Demons".

I never saw "National Treasure" but I remember when I saw the trailer I thought "wow...what a rip off of the DaVinici Code"

I don't understand how some people are so stupid and protest/boycott this book/movie. Nowhere is it being advertised as truth or a documentary, or even a theory. It's a work of fiction, it's in the fiction section of bookstores, not religion. Religious nuts are either really stupid, or really paranoid.

I read Angels & Demons after DaVinici and didn't enjoy it as much. When you think about it they're basically the same. They both start off with an important old guy getting murdered somewhere and Langdon being brought in to help solve it along with said old guy's young hot relative. Both murders are related to ancient secrets about the church.

I liked DaVinici more but that's probably just because I read it first.

I just finished up the book and I had started about 6 months ago and lost time. I really enjoyed the book and I think that it took a lot of research and time to piece the book together as well as he did.

I think that the movie may be the best of the summer to tell the truth. The cast is star studded and, in my opinion, very well thought out. I can see each actor as their part. The religious nuts will go apeshit by the time this hits the theaters though. I live in the south so they will probably have it booted after a week.

I read the book a couple years ago and really enjoyed it. I am Catholic went to Catholic school until I graduated high school (Archbishop Stepinac) I consider myself spiritual not religious. I don't buy the book hook line and sinker but it would be dumb of me to dismiss what the book has to say. I believe that all religions have their dark secrets and omissions. I entertain the thought that some of those could have accord as much as Moses parting The Red Sea.

Great book read it before you see the movie. One thing that I read about the movie that I found interesting is that Ron Howard went back and recreated some of the events they discuss in the book to help put things into perspective like National Treasure did. I'm looking forward to the movie but I'm afraid I will be disappointed.

Tom Hanks is always good. I definately pictured Jean Reno as the cop when I was reading the book, as well as Ian McKellan as the crippled guy. I love when Hollywood takes my ideas.

The most perfect role ever cast was Patrick Stewart as Professor X.

just started the book and am almost finished...it is pretty good! I am actually shocked...I heard all the hype surrounding the book when it first came out and I was like ehhh I'm not beat to read this...then I am finally giving a shot and can't put it down. I am going to read Angels and Demons next...anyone read that?

I read the book and liked it...Although I figured out the last 'code' word much earlier in the book and became impatient waiting for them to figure it out...I hate that...

As for the other gospels not accepted or admitted to the bible...aka the worlds oldest book of fairy tales...I read a few of these gospels in HS+college and they were not selected because they did not help to empower the church and solidify it's 'overlord' status....Any gospel that could possibly weaken the church or cause people to ask questions were rejected

I hope the movie doesn't suck.

I definately pictured Jean Reno as the cop when I was reading the book.
Jean Reno as a hard-boiled French cop is the most obvious casting choice since John Malkovich in Being John Malkovich.

BTW, I missed the Daily Show yesterday . . . what was the O&A reference?

The only thing I didn't figure out from DaVinci Code before the "big reveal" was who Teacher was. I'm not going to say anything as that there might be people who haven't read it yet.

Was I the only one who thought the book was crap? It was a quick read but that doesn't mean it's good. I thought it was poorly written, unsurprising and the characters were unbelievably retarded.

Just got done watching a special on NGC about the "truths" Dan Brown stated in his book. At the end they gave some compelling evidence debunking the whole Priory of Sion. Although I know do believe they may not have been a priory, I'm still not sure about the truth of Mary Magdeline. There still seems to be a lot out there. Hopefully in the future, many of the gospels that are still out there could be discovered to bring more light to the church.

It took me 5 months to read the damn book. It's not a long book, I just read it in bursts, then forgot about it, then jumped in again.

Tom Hanks looks bad ass in this. I wanna tube-steak Audrey Tautou. Jean Reno...what else is there to say other than \mm/. Sir Ian looks like a faggot in this one. I wonder why...

I've always kind of wanted to jam it down her throat and have those big eyes stare back up at me...

And, uh, the Davinci Code, yeah, looks like it'll be a great film.

I read all 4 of his books and they all stick to exactly the same formula.

In order of preferrence:
1. Angels and Demons
2. Davinci
3. Digital Fortress
4. Deception Point.

I loved Angels and Demons so much that I ended up hitting all of the sites from it during my recent trip to Rome. It was great.

i read the book and have no idea who Teacher was. Of course, I probably knew as I was reading it (well at least when it gets revealed) but ihave the memory of a fruit fly and cant remember much at all about the book. And I read it about a month ago. I suck.

Oh well, it will make the movie that much more intriguing.

Read it like two and a half years ago...it was good but I may need to give it a once over to remember a lot of the stuff.

I have high hopes for the movie but it will probably pussy out.

supposedly Dan Brown has said that after you see the movie, you will feel as if you had read the book. SO that might give some good news to people who were worried about that, like myself.
