I have a 55" Phillips Magnavox Projection TV Model#55P8288.....lucked out a few weeks ago b/c the thing died but luckily it was still covered under the best buy service contrat. Problem is that the repairman had to change alot of major parts so everything had to be re-aligned....color is good but when he adjusted the picture size i guess he did't save the setting b/c it got all fucked up when i turned it off...i'd rather not waste another day off for them to come out and rather than get lost on the phone computer i figured i'd ask here...i know he put in some kind of code using the remote but the manual and on-line have not given me anything...any repairmen/women out ther know the code to adjust picture size?

Don't mess with it. Having once worked for Best Buy, I can assure you that they're more than happy to make your Service Agreement void. Best way to do that? Make "unautherized repairs" to your equipment.
In other words, if you try and fix it, they'll say you screwed it up and walk away.

Thats what you get for buying Magnavox you cheap fuck !!!
The best bet is to down size from that 55'' piece of shit and buy a Toshiba 43'' for around the same price.
As far as fixing it yourself or calling back the repair guy...previous post said it best.
Good luck ..get it fixed put it in the newspaper ..some nitter will buy it.. then buy a quality product.
Sorry if it sounds harsh, but it is reality.

it doesn't need a repair its just an adjustment...no different than adjusting the color or tint...it's not like i'm ripping apart the boards or anything...and if their douche bag service tech had saved the settings in the first place i wouldn't be having a problem

Your TV died within four years. I'd say that's far from a "perfectly good" TV.
Here's a general rule of thumb when it comes to TV's- if Wal-Mart, K-Mart, or Target sells it, don't buy it.
So would dropping $1,800 on something else be a good idea? Absolutely. In the CRT rear projection TV's (like the one you bought, and I don't recommend due to picture quality) you could get a 55" Mitsubishi that would blow your TV away. But better yet, I'd get a LCD microdisplay TV. It might only be around the 44" range, but the picture will be better, the TV will be physically lighter, and it will be more ready for the future.

1st step would be to not have bought a Magnavox anything.
LOL, anyways....
I used to align those things but I forget the codes. It was select 7-9-7-9 or something like that. It's been 5 years and my memory is hazy sir. I'm sorry couldn't be more help.

I may be douche, but I did not waste my money on a fucking Magnavox TV.
And to be perfectly honest the service contract to boot.
What a sap.
If you buy quality you do not need to spend an extra $300 on a service contract. Now you are stuck with a broken piece of crap that you are trying to fix.
I am being as helpful as possible in this situation. Get the ting fixed, try and sell it to some shmuck and buy something better. It is only going to get worse trust me. I sold these things for the Wiz for 10 years.
Go an buy a 40 odd inch DLP and you will not regret it. Don't buy the warranty. Or if you can wait, September they come out with the new models and the price will come down a little more. You may even catch a good deal on a 2006 model.
Just don't buy a display model. 12 hours a day on and they shut them from the circuit breaker every night.
If you really want some help PM me. I have a good friend who worls for PC Richards that can help you.
Now stop using such hurtful words.

The only extended service I've recommended has been from where I work now, and that's only because we give it back 100% as in store credit if you don't use it.

just call BestBuy and make them fix it for you. Pull the line they use when selling it to you, "It's a performance service plan, not a warranty... you guys guarantee the performance of the product, and it is not performing correctly"

you mean as opposed to "cheap fuck"?
and for the record i have a friend of mine who bought a sony around the same time i got mine...she spent more she didn't get the service contract and a year ago it cost her $450 to fix the exact same problem mine had....one of the boards blew, so that shoots alot of these posts right to hell....yes one day in the next year or two i'll upgrade but right now i have a perfectly good TV...i mean it must be nce to go and drop a few grand whenever on the newest technology but some people have other responsibilites that neeed to be taken care of first...just sayin'

LIsten. I do not have the money to upgrade every two years. Thats why you have to buy quality product. I have a 51'' Hitachi rear projection that we got back in 2000-2001. At the time it was the best out there. I could have spent more, but it was not worth it.
Listen people like to break balls here. Don't be so sensitive.
As fas as your friend buying a Sony. I would never buy a Sony TV unless it was an XBR. The rest are overpriced dog shit.
A previous poster had a great piece of advice. Stay away from any brand that you can find in Walmart, Kmart or Target. Zenith, RCA, Magnavox, GE, Phillips are a few that come to mind.
And as far as having a perfectly fine TV....Then why start this thread..
QUOTE"As fas as your friend buying a Sony. I would never buy a Sony TV unless it was an XBR"
I have worked for a big name company for many years and had to deal with returns. I for one can say that Sony is one of the best brand names to buy, second that is Samsung. I have both brand name TVs in my house(samsung 32"hd and a Sony Cineza projector) and never ever had a single problem, and yes Sony is very expensive. That is why I have the Samsung.

apparently you must just be illiterate...the purpose of the thread was to find out if there was a way to not have to take a half a day off of work for some 400 lb douche bag to come in my house and make a 30 second adjustment that i could make on my own if i had the proper code for the remote...which the manual does not provide, again once into the setup mode it no harder than changing the brightness or color, but i can't get into that mode with out a code...see occasionally there are some knowledgeable posters who will help you out, stick to the topic, give ya a little tussle, and be done with it...then there are the poster in this thread....

I got this from here:
http://repairfaq.ece.drexel.edu/REPAIR/F_tvfaqb.html#TVFAQB_006
* Some Magnavox models: Enter 062596 then MENU. The channels will change but
when MENU is pressed, the TV will enter the service menu.
(From: Gscivi (gscivi@aol.com)).
Hit MENU on the remote, while the menu is still up press the numbers 061596
or 061597. One of these will bring up the service menu. Now, your right/left
arrows on remote will switch between the numbers across the bottom of the
screen, highlight the number set right after the 'setup or service' option.
The arrow up/down will change to the next service position.

Some of your are taking this a little too far.
First of all, why would anyone refuse to buy Zenith? Zenith is simply LG under another name - and LG makes some of the best HDTVs out there. I have an LG 26" LCD model in my bedroom. Philips makes good TVs as well. RCA is hit or miss, but for CRT projection TVs, they are actually fairly good.
I do agree with Sony, though. XBR is the finest TV in the world, arguably. The rest are, indeed, overpriced - but not dogshit. They ARE quality TVs, but overpriced.

For the big plasmas I recommend Panasonic (We have one, its great, also americas #1 selling plasma brand), Samsung and Pioneer, Sony XBR models only. Anything else is garbage... or if you want to show the world you know fuck about tv's buy a westinghouse or any cheap ass brand from walmart.

You TV was broke and a serviceman came out and fixed it. He did not finish the job or fucked up something else, whetever.
Once the TV is fucked up in the first place you will have problems every 6 months or so.

I couldn't agree more. Where I work, we don't carry Sony simply because they're difficult to sell. You can get the same quality and durability from other brands for a lot less, and more and more people are seeing that. I'd go as far as to agree with my manager when he predicts Sony will be out of the TV world within a few years.
And ditto towards the Zenith comments. I love how their plasmas have everything all the way down to burn in correction built into them. Lots of nice features there. But yeah, I'd still go LG first.
